As much as Josh says the game will remain free, doubt it'll remain free for long - the NYT article about buying the game is behind a pay wall & someone has quoted this line from it

Yeah the minute it moves to a paying model or I have to sit through more than one ad, I'm no longer playing and I am sure the vast majority are in the same boat. How many pay for a game that you can only play for a few minutes each day before it's complete?

But I do like the line from the NYT that they want to "further the "user experience". But I guess what else are they going to say.

I'm not really a big city corporate suit and tie type, but I'm curious how you get a return on investment without somehow dicking around with it.

I could see the NYT trying to make it free for members to get more people to sign up, stick it behind a paywall

I hope not, if its just ads or links to NYT articles on the page but doesn't wreck the basic experience it would be fine

but their press release doesn't fill me with confidence

I think that's likely what will happen - probably keep it free for a few weeks and then you'll get a message along the lines,

"Thanks for enjoying your free trial of Wordle. To continue playing please select from the following subscription options..."

Having regulation/normal free wordle and then some other wordle variants behind a pay wall would make sense. Or perhaps your streaks require sign up etc...

Just heard about the sale - great for the creator, but even the clone version are now allowing puzzles to be shared which helps if the NYT make it too hard to access.
