I was once told by someone( who said they witnessed it ) a week after the 94 GF debacle - that 4 Geelong players got smashed midweek in grand final week

I was told the name of the hotel - and i was told the names of the 4 Geelong players - but im not naming them because i dont know whether it was utter bulldust - and thus i dont want want to defame anyone

I also heard on the radio that year - the day after the brownlow count - that Malcolm Blight was the last person to leave the count - maybe Blighty knew what was coming in the GF !!

As for the current Geelong players - Mike Fitzpatrick summed it up best - he said being an AFL footballer today ( how strict they have to be ) would be quite dull

Well I know Billy has confirmed that hasn't he? Said after the PF wins they'd get shitfaced, while their GF opponents were being more mature and prepared better.

Fitzpatrick was a champion player in a champion side - he said they would play the game Saturday - they would then go to Sunday Morning training - they would sit back and have a keg - and watch the VFA - at that point he said being an AFL player today he would find quite dull - and he said that last year when still in his high powered role at the AFL

He is and always has been the world's expert in dull.

Unless the players were doing something obnoxious and/or illegal it is a complete non-issue in my book.

As far as I know most teams have a rule that players aren't allowed to drink 4-5 days before a match, allowing them a bit of time unwind after a game. That's why you see teams declare a 'no alcohol' pact late in the season when they're gunning for a flag - based on Hodge's actions last year it's not a theory the Hawks subscribe to and it hasn't exactly harmed them on the field.
