Honestly would have liked to see Faulkner in the squad. Would have given us the reliability we need with the ball from our all-rounder.
Yeh its a shame he dropped off lately.
Was very important to our lineup for a long time.
Faulkner's form didn't really drop off. it's just that he was a bowling all-rounder who had a secure spot in the team thanks to his batting feats, and when those stopped happening (which could be considered a good thing) they realized he averaged over 30 with the ball and picked a spinner instead. The irony is that he would fit better in this line-up (with a keeper at 6)
Faulkner's average in 2016 and 2017 was slightly better than his average in 2013 and 2014. He had a very hot spot in 2015 but based on the overall record, he just returned to usual business after the WC

He never "dropped off", at least not with the ball.
The unsustainable hero hitting with the bat went away, but that's because he's not naturally a big-hitting batsman in the first place.
as a 5th bowler, he would have been fine. it would have required a risk (I would have gone Handscomb with gloves; besides, there's risk no matter what direction you go) but seeing how I reckon there's a good chance of seeing Carey at 6 and NCN/Cummins at 7...

I actually thought our bowling was passable for the most part. While we failed to get the early wickets which are absolute necessities against India, Cummins and Starc were reasonably economical. Zampa was poor granted. But NCN bowled pretty well in those overs getting towards the last ten - run rate was dipping a bit - could well have been an immensely different ball game if Carey didn't drop Pandya first ball off NCN. Obviously the last ten was a free for all.
Batting was mediocre, behind the eight-ball all the way through. Not sure exactly how to do it, but we haven't hit on the best combination yet. Time to bring Marsh in.
I think the game does reflect the pecking order though. If I were a betting man, my money would be on India. If you don't get early wickets they simply cannot be beaten. Their bowling with Bumrah and the point of difference of the two spinners is something I expect that will trip the other contenders up.

Having a 5th bowler who "just" averages 30 with the ball, and can be trusted at the death, would be much better than Stoinis' expensive 40+ average.
The real killer is Zampa averaging 46 over the last two years in ODIs. Whatever surprise factor he had initially is completely gone. No idea why we haven't switched to Lyon. Similar strike rate, but far more economical, less hittable, and an excellent versatile run-saving fielder too.

Their bowling strike power in the limited overs formats is seriously overlooked. They routinely get deep into the oppositions order or bowl them out in both ODIs and T20Is. The Kuldeep-Chahal combo is a real puzzle.

India having quicks who can reliably push into the 140's with great control is really what has pushed them into being a dominant force.
Love me some Bumrah - hopefully he doesn't have a flash in the pan career with his unorthodox action.

I am surprised how Warner is playing differently here in World Cup whereas in IPL he was highest scorer and smashing everywhere.. Here he was struggling even against Afghans and now in this match.. yesterdays pitch wasnt that bad to bat.. if Pandya and Maxwell could smash so could Warner..
If he bats like this in the IPL he gets dropped and loses money, here he can bat however he likes because its all about Davey and who gives a s**t about the team!

Only got to watch bits and pieces of yesterday's match, but 30-odd run loss to one of the top 2 teams in the world is about where we are at, and certainly means no need to panic.
Read a bunch of pages in this thread and it was predictable sky is falling sorta stuff. But in reality we aren't going to bulldoze our way through this tournament - we don't have a good enough team to do that. We just need to do enough to make the semi finals (and it would pretty disappointing if we didn't) and then go for the 1-2 punch to try and take out the title at the death.
IMO India and England are locks for the semi, and the final two spots are between us, New Zealand and West Indies, with favouritism in that order. If we had to choose, we'd take a win over West Indies (whom we are competing with) and a loss to India (whom we'll almost certainly finish behind regardless) than vice-versa.
Our biggest weakness is our all rounders spot and the spinners role, and neither are easy to rectify with what we have on offer. Stoinis' form is not even close to good enough for batting in the top 7, and he's a weak #5 bowler. I think we just have to take a punt on Maxwell as the #5 bowler (with a bit of assistance from Finch and Smith), and bring SMarsh (who's got some good performances in ODI's over the last 2 years, including two tons in England last year) in for Stoinis. I don't think we lose anything in the bowling there, and we bring a specialist batsmen in.
I don't think Zampa is working and hasn't for a while, so I'd bring in Lyon for him, but Lyon's ODI form is not exactly inspiring so not sure that will make a huge difference.
NCN needs to do a bit more with the ball as well. If it weren't for that sensational batting against the Windies he'd be nervous about his position in the team too. For now, I think he holds as Behrendorff (who I do rate) hasn't exactly set the world on fire when given the chance, so for now he has to bide his time. That injury to Jhye hurts.
And it goes without saying, but Warner needs to get that explosiveness about him back. That sort of innings chasing 350 is not near good enough. Put us under a lot of pressure.
But overall, I think we are going about as expected.
And lastly, can anyone explain how MMarsh has been quietly phased out of the ODI team? Doesn't get picked in the format he performs in, but gets picked in the format he doesn't perform in. That doesn't make any sense to me.

I think with Mitch, it was more a case of him needing time away from playing cricket to read just after a pretty horror spring/summer. Agree he on recent ODI form and capability, should be in the side. But in his state of mind coming off the back of the summer he had, it would be pretty hard to select him with the lack of confidence he visibly had in his own game.

Lyon doesn't need to rip through sides. He just needs to be that holding bowler that keeps the runs down and frustrates the batsmen in the middle overs. If he turns in 0/45-0/50 off his 10 overs, it's job done. A wicket or two is a bonus, but he'd mainly be there to economically churn through overs in this format. And no, Zampa, Stoinis, or some other part-timer can't do the same job. If they had proven they could, it wouldn't be a conversation.
Lyon is also one of our best and most versatile fielders too, which is invaluable if we're trying to hide the likes of Khawaja or Shaun Marsh out there.
