Lyon doesn't need to rip through sides. He just needs to be that holding bowler that keeps the runs down and frustrates the batsmen in the middle overs. If he turns in 0/45-0/50 off his 10 overs, it's job done. A wicket or two is a bonus, but he'd mainly be there to economically churn through overs in this format. And no, Zampa, Stoinis, or some other part-timer can't do the same job. If they had proven they could, it wouldn't be a conversation.

Lyon is also one of our best and most versatile fielders too, which is invaluable if we're trying to hide the likes of Khawaja or Shaun Marsh out there.

This is the concept of Lyon in the short formats, yet he's failed to produce each time.

I am surprised how Warner is playing differently here in World Cup whereas in IPL he was highest scorer and smashing everywhere.. Here he was struggling even against Afghans and now in this match.. yesterdays pitch wasnt that bad to bat.. if Pandya and Maxwell could smash so could Warner..

Jogging along when he is considered one of our big hitters is a real negative. He needs to sort himself out.

Clearly, the blueprint is to go after our bowlers other than Starc and Cummins so we probably need to bring in Behrendorff. Which is unfortunate for NCN. I dont think he bowled too badly after his first over yesterday.

Stoinis is the big problem which I cant see a great alternative for. I think the selectors missed a trick by not taking MMarsh to India and UAE prior to the WC and not having him in the squad as cover for Stoinis. With NCN at 8, there was a bit more cover in the lineup however with a needed change to the bowling attack, puts a bit more pressure on the top order to make the runs.

Long tournament, plenty of improvement ahead.

Problem is, Marsh needs time away from international cricket. If his confidence is shite, pulling him into a world cup won't help. Shame there is no other all-rounder on the radar. Jhye Richardson is a bit miss, as like NCN he can hit.

Just as you posted this it has been announced he is being flown over as cover for Stoinis.

He's only "failed to produce" if you expect him to be ripping through sides. His economy rate of 4.86 in ODIs is exactly what is needed for that holding role.

He's played two T20Is and bowled 30 balls total, so I wouldn't read too much into that side of things.

He was already in the A squad to tour England, so he’s not getting a break. Might as well play him in his best format.

Looks like our game vs pakistan will be a washout, we might need to win 4 of the last 5 to make it although 3 out of 5 with a good run rate could be enough.

3 is probably enough, sunday's weather looks better than today's though

Exactly. What India made painfully obvious too us is that we didn't have enough good bowling options

The only bad thing with say a Behrendoff playing is that Cummins won’t get the new ball- out of Starc, Cummins and Behrendoff he’s the more versatile.

True, but having Cummins as first change isn't the worst - keeps the pressure on a bit longer. Look at how NCN was targeted.
