Curious to know who is bowling at the death?

Also is Australia’s overrated pace trio the right mix for English conditions?

Thats why Tye is essential. Some form of variety is desperately needed and our all round options in Stoinis and Marsh mirror the quick bowlers rather than offer a complimentary skillset.

Don’t think we can play both Cummins and Hazlewood in the same side, too similar. Need to identify a death bowler pronto.

They also need to decide on a spinner. Even though they keep picking him, they clearly don’t trust Zampa to do a job consistently.

And then there’s the batting. Probably only Finch, Smarsh and Stoinis are locks at this stage, every other place in the swuad is up in the air.

If you look at all the other major sides, they pretty much have a clear set lineup that they’re going to go with. The fact that we’re nowhere near having that suggests we’re not going to go too well at all next year.

Tye comfortably ahead of Pattinson.

Will they select Warner?
Unless there's something going on behind the scenes that we don't know about, I would have thought it's almost guaranteed. Smith is an interesting one for the ODI side, before the s**t hit the fan I remember there being some conjecture over whether he was still in the best ODI XI.

I think the last 3 ODI's are enough proof that he is.

I just think we need a proper batsmen like Smith. One of the faults of the team selection is too many all-rounders in my opinion who aren’t true all-rounders.

We do not have a settled line-up. Expectations should be low of even reaching finals. We just going to have to pick the best 11 around the time, based on whom available. Whomever is fit and in form in March will be set to be picked in a squad. I think we have 3 one dayers here in January v India then some one dayers in late February over there and a few more v Pakistan in UAE in March. Still a bit mystified that Coulter-Nile did not play in either of last two one dayers.

Smith will rightfully be a lock.

With Smith and Warner set to return I would have thought that our lineup is decently settled. Finch, Warner, Smith, Shaun Marsh, Stoinis are all locks you would think, and Carey seems not too far off too. That leaves only one spot truly up in the air, could either turn to head or maxwell or even Lynn (hopefully not) depending on the situation.

As a side note I dislike Lynn getting a go for Australia more than the marsh brothers.

When does the squad need to be announced by? I assume it would be no later than April to allow for all the media bits and prices to be produced.
In 2015, squads had to be with the ICC by 7 January for a tournament starting on 14 Feb. So probably mid-to late-April.

Our last scheduled ODI is 18 January....

The matches are not scheduled yet, but I think there are series in India and the UAE due in March and April. We would want to have a good idea by then, to get the squad playing alongside each other - but that also allows some time for Smith and Warner to play (and prove form) before the WC squads need to be in.

edit: My mistake, I thought Warner and Smith were due back around halfway through March. Apparently its the 29th, so they wouldn't play the UAE games like I was thinking.

Locks: Smith, Stoinis, Finch, Starc, S Marsh, Hazlewood, Carey

High Chance: Warner, Maxwell, Khawaja, Cummins, M Marsh, Coulter-Nile, Zampa, Tye, Lynn, Head

Roughies: Agar, McDermott, Short, Pattinson, Handscomb, Lyon

My XI:
Warner
Finch
S Marsh
Smith
Stoinis
Carey (wk)
Maxwell
Cummins
Starc
Zampa
Hazlewood
12th- Khawaja

Bats - Warner, Finch, Smith, S.Marsh, Lynn/Maxwell/Head/Khawaja/Short/McDermott for one spot

Batsman that can bowl spin - Maxwell/Head for one spot

Medium pace all rounders - Stoinis, M.Marsh

Keeper - Carey

Quicks - Starc, Cummins, Hazelwood, Tye/NCN/Stanlake/Behrendorff/Richardson/Whichever quick is fit and is bowling well at the right time for two spots

Spinner - Zampa/Agar for one spot

I think that is how they will structure the 15. Don't think they will use two spots on spinners.

The selectors have given McDermott every chance. I think they are keen on him as the break glass in case of emergency keeper for the WC rather than picking a specialist back up to Carey. He just hasn't done anything with the bat at the moment for them to cling to.

This would be close to my team i reckon.
Khwaja, Agar, McDermott/Short, Coulter-Nile, Tye in the squad perhaps.

Don't think you can have Mitch Marsh and Stoinis in the same XI.
I'd drop Marsh for Maxwell.

At the moment for me:

Finch
Khawaja
Smarsh
Smith
Mitch Marsh
Maxwell
Carey
Cummins
Starc
Zampa
Hazlewood

I have faith in Zampa and I reckon I think need someone like Khawaja opening.

You can swap Mitch Marsh with Stoinis since both have experience in England.

My squad would be:

Warner
Finch (c)
S Marsh
Smith
Carey (+)
Stoinis
M Marsh
Agar
Starc
Tye
Hazlewood

Maxwell
Head
Coulter-Nile
Cummins

For some reason Marsh is seen as a guy that shouldn't play limited overs for whatever reason despite averaging 35 with the bat and ball in ODI cricket, and having a decent series at the start of the year he hasn't been selected since. I wanted Weatherald selected in the last ODI's against South Africa but he was unlucky. Agar and Zampa is a tough choice but I'm biased towards Ash so yeah.
