Let’s be honest, the coach clearly brings no heart to this group. The fact that it has become acceptable for our players to take the big cash and head to the Middle East or China to play instead of trying to further themselves and become the best they can in Europe is the problem. Make the call unacceptable Graham, tell them if they choose to play in these substandard leagues for the cash, then you are no longer the the type we want representing our country

We probably won't get through even with beating Saudis and Japan.

We'd need one of the following to still be in the mix (factoring in wins over both Japan and Saudi Arabia).

  • Saudi loss or draw with China
  • Japan not overturning the goal difference against Vietnam, which would be at least 5 goals (if we won both games by a goal).

Japan need a point here, they'll get it. Probably win 1-0 on the counter attack with a goal in the first 30 mins and shut up shop.

We ain't beating both of them, so pretty much a moot point

The only positive here is if there was going to be a WC to miss it was the Qatar WC which is a high chance of turning into a farce. This might just be the wake up call the game needs right down to grass roots level. What was good enough in the 90s and 00s is no longer good enough now. The game has moved on so much since.

Missing a WC may well do us a favor.

He should and hopefully will.
Twice went up a goal. Twice squandered it.
As soon as the goal is scored, change tactics. Get defensive behind the ball.
This is probably the worst Australia has been in football for 15 years.
Kovacic should be nowhere near international level.
Eh. It’ll be a nail in the coffin for many.
I assume you mean Karacic and yeah he's no good. Rhyan Grant is a better player in all honesty.

Tom Rogics ratio of good games to bad for the Socceroos would be poor too. He is invisible in a hell of a lot more games than he is good for us.

Its really easy to blame the manager (and he doesn't exactly seem to be making us better than we are at all) but we were extremely poor at the back end of Ange's stint (before he quit on us) when he was using some frankly bizarre tactics and was having his arse saved by Cahill against ******* Syria. We were drawing against Iraq and Thailand away and then were lucky to even beat Thailand at home on the last match day of the 2018 qualifying.

We were even worse under the expensive international management of van Marwijk. The cattle simply is not there and I don't think there is a silver bullet to solve the issue. Football in this country is completely confused as it tried - and failed - to appeal to a mass audience but in doing so seems to have alienated its core fan base and ended up getting the worst of both worlds.

That was deflating wasn't it. The disappointing thing is the inconsistency of a few players - Karacic was good against Vietnam but woeful last night, Rogic no where near influential enough. Goodwin and Hrustic needed to be brought on sooner to have an impact.

We are not going to take 6 points in the last two games. And we surely won't beat one of Peru/Uruguay/Colombia over 120 minutes. Going to really suck to miss a World Cup, but the FFA can take the blame.

Absolute horseshit! That's two games now giving away a lead with a stupid penalty! Now we need to hang on for a playoff spot! Arnold should be sacked asap and it's time the FFA open the coffers bring in a experienced manager i.e Guus style if we are to have any chance of progressing!

It was very disappointing. The first half wasn’t too bad. Took control of key parts, pressed high. But just like any Australian side of the last 10-15 years, struggle to score in open play. The final third is a mess. Duke came on for Maclaren and has more impact. Thought Leckie and especially Boyle were great, just nothing in front of goals.
Feel like this is the early 2000s however that was only administration issue. Now it’s both the lack of quality players and management.
Arnold’s trying to copy the high 4-2-3-1 formation of top teams in club competitions but it doesn’t work in Asia. Half the teams have one or two star players that play well off the counter, that it upsets Australia’s defence. Happens every game away. Full credit to Oman’s coach. Two changes at half time flipped the switch. Arnold takes too long to change tactics nor make any substitutions.

He needed to be sacked after the China game, horse has bolted now.

And when Guus came in we had players like Aloisi, Kennedy and Grella who weren’t even in the best XI, yet were playing in one of the top 5 leagues.

Now we’ve got two players in the top 5 leagues in the whole squad (Hrustic and Ryan). Yes, they’ve become more globalized than a generation ago but our top end just isn’t there.

Having said that, you can have an average squad and still play with energy, organization and purpose. We don’t do any of these under Arnold.

Canada are currently romping in CONCACAF, perhaps we could learn a thing or two from them, as they are a closer comparison to us than the Netherlands or Germany.

We need to start playing guys who are getting regular minutes as well, regardless of the level. Convinced part of the reason we have coughed up so many late goals this campaign is lack of match fitness.

Sat up and watched it but was too angry to post.
Both fullbacks offered nothing, midfield has no pace in it and how Irvine continues to get picked for every game i will never know.
Mooy controls the game but we are too slow in posession ,Rogic gets appearance money for approximately 60mins a game and how often has he had even what you would call a decent game never mind about a great game?
Up front Boyle tries but the service they got was terrible ,we have one change in tempo and that is to go even slower and pass backwards ffs.

At set pieces where is the imagination to vary things and try something different? We must be one of the easiest teams to play agains as we play the same way nearly every game.
I am not surprised at the easy ride Arnold seems to get in the media, i really would be surpised if we make Qatar now.

Getting Frank Farina vibes about Arnie. Time to sack him and hire a quality high profile manager. Give it our best shot at Qatar but make the main focus Asian Cup 23.

Where's the heat on Arnold? Ange copped it left, right and centre and he's 100x the manager Arnold is.
It’ll come. However the media and general are best mates with him. Short sighted appointment, hoping he somewhere jumped from amateurish in 2007 to professional in 2019/20. He hasn’t, and clearly isn’t capable of international football.

Four options.
1. Sack him immediately and don't waste the four years, hire someone brilliant who will give us the best chance to qualify and more.
2. Keep Arnie and hold on to the piddly chance of qualifying, but in reality we won't qualify and four years will be pissed down the drain.
3. Sack Arnie now and hire someone to implement their vision and take us through the next four years.
4. Bring back Guus out of retirement to take us to the promised land. We're not worthy, oh holy one.

Bosnich has been smashing him for a while now? When Ange was copping it left, right and centre was there really anyone else other than Slater - who doesn't have a TV gig anymore - really going hard?

Just saw the Oman Pen.

Is there no VAR to overturn that?
It was a penalty, unfortunately. Clumsy timing, no where near the ball. Even if it was minimal contact. Shouldn’t have gone in for the challenge

Looks like Karacic hit it with his foot on the replay?

And he was shoulder to shoulder?

Very big chance we don't qualify, which must see Arnold sacked. Position would be untenable as qualifying should be our minimum standard.

Aussie football is going down the toilet. Both men's and women's are huge disappointing underperformers.

That would not have been given to us if we were trailing 2-1. Not a chance in hell.

Get a German coach. A young coach somewhere.
How the fu** media demanded Ange to be removed is beyond me.
Relied on Boyle crossing in.
Amazing so many in the media were vocal about average results under Ange, but then we lose a ******* must win qualifier against Omans 2nds and dead silence.

Roll the UAE in two legs, then roll Uruguay in two legs as a nice prep for the World Cup, will work out well when you think about it :thumbsu:

EDIT: Just found out the confederation playoffs are single matches. Still, a good way to warm up for the Cup :thumbsu:
We couldn't beat the Oman ressies the * do you think we are getting within 4 goals of Uruguay. And thats assuming we squeak past the UAE.

Ange literally the only coach to lead Australia to any decent silverware, winning the Asian Cup in 2015.
