Two media-related questions for this thread:

1) Can someone explain to me how the World Cup is traditionally televised? I've seen ads on both Fox and Nine touting "exclusive live coverage". Does Nine get all the games involving Australia, while Fox gets the games Nine doesn't want, something like soccer's World Cup coverage? And is it one international feed of broadcasters which is sent to all the nations, or will Nine have its usual commentary team for the matches?

2) Does anyone have an audio recording of Steve Waugh's century from last Friday, including the final 2-3 overs? I loved the build-up to the last ball, and Agnew's emotional call was sensational. Wish I had recorded it myself ...

As for the World Cup, I think Ch 9 has the Australia games and Fox has the rest.

i left the mini-disc player attatched to the stereo whilst i went to the ground so ive got the whole innings recorded. most of it is boring jibber that you'll never want to sit through again though. i plan to edit it to include him walking on the ground, getting his 50, getting to 10,000 runs and the last few overs of the day. a 10-20 minute highlight package will be well worth listening to in a few years time.

Re: Re: World Cup Television Coverage

Wow, that was "extraordinary" as Aggers put it. He is a class commentator.

Thanks a lot Bomber Spirit.

I loved "stuff the silver, we've come for the gold. Poms would come back tomorrow, Aussies want it now, COME ON STEVE" from Kerry as well.

both of them thought he was shutting up shop in the last over, blocking the 1st 3 :D

If Nine gets 16 games and Fox the rest, than Fox's ads are very misleading!

So who calls the action for the World Cup games on Nine? Will it be the regular commentary team or is it another group?

I think it will be most likely like the 99 World Cup.
Where commentators from all nations are involved.
Such as Botham, Gower, Lawry, Greig, Chappel, Benaud.
I'm not sure. But all games except the final in 99 had world commentators and the final was the only game we got the 9 commentary team without the rest.
I hope Aamir Sohail doesn't commentate. I couldnt stand it.

Great news in todays AGE.Ian Chappell has been banned from calling games at the WC.

Chappell claims World Cup snub
January 19 2003
By Danny Weidler

Former Australian cricket captain Ian Chappell has been removed from the Channel Nine commentary team for the World Cup next month because of a newspaper column he wrote attacking International Cricket Council chief executive Malcolm Speed.

It was made clear to the Nine network, through the host broadcaster in South Africa, that Speed did not want Chappell to be part of the international pool of commentators working at the tournament. Instead, Chappell will host the Nine coverage from the studio in Australia.

Chappell confirmed he would not be attending the World Cup and that Speed had allegedly nominated himself and former West Indian fast bowler, now journalist, Colin Croft as two commentators he did not want to be part of the team.

"All I know is that Speed was asked if there were any commentators he didn't want at the World Cup, not by Channel Nine, but probably by the host broadcaster," Chappell said. "Apparently, his answer was Colin Croft and myself."

When informed about Chappell's comments by The Sunday Age, the ICC declined to make any statement. Graeme Koos, executive producer of cricket at Channel Nine, said he did not wish to comment on the issue.

Chappell, 59, said the Nine network offered to take the matter further, but he decided to stay at home.

"I was told there were three different options, and one of them was for Nine to fight it, if that was the way I wanted to go about it," Chappell said.

"Obviously, it is a World Cup and I would like to see the World Cup. That is on the one hand, but I'm not as keen on travelling as I used to be."

Asked if he considered the ICC's decision and Speed's demand undemocratic, he said: "I would have thought it was a pretty dangerous precedent to set."

Chappell's attack on Speed was sparked by the ICC chief's stance during the sponsorship row that broke out before the Champions Trophy tournament last September and is still simmering.

On August 14 last year, Speed warned players they had to choose between "cash or country".

"If a player has put his commercial interests ahead of his ability to play for the country, he needs to decide what is more important to him: the money or playing for his country," Speed said.

Chappell, who was one of the key figures in the World Series Cricket revolution in the 1970s, responded in his column in the Indian English-language newspaper, the Hindustan Times, on September 10.

"It is appropriate to point out that Mr Speed has earnt a substantial income and enjoyed a comfortable lifestyle in recent times courtesy of the skill and entertainment value of the players," he wrote.

"(The) ICC's lucrative sponsorship deals were made possible on the basis of the considerable skills of international cricketers and not, as the ICC would have us believe, its brilliant negotiations."

Chappell last week stood by what he had written in the column. "My point in the article was . . . let's take Sachin Tendulkar as an example. In his case, he had signed those contracts way before any of the World Cup negotiations ever started, way before.

"That's what annoyed me about the 'cash or country' comment.

"And all I said was that while he (Speed) is making that comment, I have not noticed any salary sacrifices from Malcolm Speed."

Croft is head of sport and physical education facilities at the University of West Indies in Trinidad and Tobago and was never going to be at the World Cup as a commentator.

He said last night he was unaware of any directive from Speed.

"I'm extremely surprised," he said. "I have had no contact with Malcolm Speed or the ICC.

"I focus only on West Indies cricket. I don't comment on international cricket or the ICC."

Nein televised all the games involving Australia in the soccer World Cup? How much did they pay for that? :D

No doubt Nein's coverage will be ordinary as usual. In the last World Cup, Nein showed only games involving Australia until the finals, and even then a few games were cut. Games not involving Australia were banished to cable.
Why is it Sri Lanka v England in some meaningless bollocks match at the Adelaide Oval will get the prime time treatment from Nein, yet the same World Cup match won't even get a show on free-to-air? Just in the first few days, I can pick the following games out which you would think would get a reasonable audience:
9/2 South Africa v West Indies
10/2 Sri Lanka v New Zealand
13/2 Zimbabwe v England (if for no other reason so see if Mugabe comes out on the ground to greet the players pre-match)
16/2 South Africa v New Zealand
And none of them are going to get shown on free-to-air?

It's the world cup for god's sake! If the soccer world cup got similar treatment from Nein the place would have been destroyed by every Italian in the country! And you would have thought cricket would rate a lot better than soccer, particularly seeing Australia is actually involved in the cricket.

Well done Nein, you've f*cked it up again.

I just got the latest copy of the Austar magazine and Im pretty sure that what fox sports have been saying about seeing every single ball is true.

They'll play all Non Australian involved matches live, then they'll replay all the Australian matches as soon as they finish.

9/2 South Africa v West Indies ... is definately being shown on free-to-air television, wouldn't have a clue about the rest of the games though

The link below is a newspaper report on what the TV coverage of the World Cup will be for Channel 9 viewers.

http://www.theage.com.au/articles/2003/02/01/1043804570712.html

In summation, it will be similar to the last World Cup in England, where only the Australian games and the finals got shown in full - however we'll be able to see the second half of plenty of other matches as they usually begin after 11:00pm

And those of us lucky enough to have Foxtel as well will have an absolute feast of cricket with matches on most days and replays of the previous game as well for those who missed it.

I got the Sunday Times liftout feature which had the times Channel Nine was showing the cricket...

* No Opening Ceremony (yet they showed the India Opening Ceremony)

* No Australia vs Netherlands & Australia vs Nambia

Can anyone confirm we only get to see 4/6 Australian games on free to air? Wish I had Foxtel.
