As Magnum27 knows, we got slick greens at The National. And when the wind's up, you can easily putt off the green. Next time it may happen to me imma gonna run and put it back uphill.

If it runs off to somewhere putrid, simply declare it unplayable, take a 1 stroke penalty and hit the putt again.
Let's see how playing partners react to that strategy...

Leishman wants to bring in the PGA Tour to help set up US Open courses going forward - presumably to ensure everything is nice and fair and standard. Ie lust like the conditions are every other week on tour. Sounds super exciting Marc!

My votes for the whiniest molls this week are Poulter (the biggest jerk in world sport bar none), Z Johnson, Leishman, Garcia. These overpaid self entitled tossbags are truly pathetic.

Liar ;)

Ohhh if it were just that easy.

Which part?

Well for one thing, if you putt the ball into a bunker/water hazard you may not try that trick at home. ;)

If you putt the ball off the green, into the rough or back out onto the fairway--I would be hard pressed to see how you can work that into an unplayable. :p

I can't believe there isn't a decision somewhere in the rules saying you cannot declare a ball unplayable after putting it off the green and onto fairway/rough.

This seems to be a violation of the spirit of the rules, no?

For example:

Alex blows his 6 footer past the hole, across the green down into the fairway. A chip and 2 putts= 3 more strokes. Or, take the unplayable, re-putt the 6 footer and walk off with 2 strokes instead??

That just doesn't seem right at all.

Agreed completely

Apparently it is so though, correct?

Thats my understanding

I'd encourage all junior golfers to know the rules, especially the quirky ones

I still cannot believe that is correct. Has to be a rule that supersedes that type of scenario.

If for no other reason, I can easily see that type of situation occurring at the World Championship. I can't believe tourney officials would allow him to declare a perfectly playable ball unplayable to save himself a stroke or two.

I just can't wrap my head around that being okay

It's correct, the rule. You can declare unplayable anywhere basically. Playing partner can argue its not unplayable, but how does he/she know what is unplayable to you?

Just seems ripe for abuse.

In the scenario I put forth, does anyone think my son can't chip from the fairway?

Only your sons opinion matters tho.

Least shots to get ball in the hole

Rules = what we are governed by
Spirit of an individuals play is what we judge by

Fair enough--but I will make it easy on him. Pull a Phil and if I am still upright he won't have to worry about penalty strokes, his old man will disqualify him.

Wait, Does Alex putt first, onto the fairway? The unplayable is taken just before the putt is made.

Example, Al says my putt is unplayable, take a drop within 2 club lengths on the green and sink putt to make it 2 strokes.

My opinion of Leish has gone down a lot after reading those comments, really anyone whining over the course this weekend tbh.

No in my scenario he missed a 6 footer downhill that goes across green and 30 yards from hole on fairway--declares that ball in fairway to be unplayable, then re-putts the 6 footer and makes it.

Takes the 1 stroke penalty and ends up getting in the hole in 2 strokes in that scenario instead of potentially a chip back to the green and 2 putts, thus saving himself a stroke.

It's an annual tradition at the US Open.

Whining and more whining

I knew someone who was so useless in bunkers he could barely get out of them. Didn't matter how shallow the bunker was. He would then resort to playing out backwards or sideways , often unsuccessfully. If he played out backwards, rather than attempting another pitch over the bunker, he would chip or putt sideways of it.
And then BOOM he discovered this rule. When he first used this playing in my foursome i argued he couldn't do this. In the club house after the round a quick straw poll of members also thought he couldn't either. Just goes to show a solid understanding of the rules can be used to your advantage.

I bet that guy had trouble finding playing partners after pulling that stunt. I for one wouldn't play with him.
Would be a whole lot better just to learn how to play a bunker shot, ffs it's really not that hard.
