^ ^ I think it depends on where you are on the globe re: known/well-known. He's really really well known in Europe, and probably it shows the standing of the European players now that they have planted three players in the podium spots. Perhaps that reflects quite a bit on the lack of online poker in the USA? (just as a side-note, there are obviously some unbelievable American pros in that field, but without the wherewithall to grind and compete daily online versus the rest of the globe, they are at a huge disadvantage to the rest of us and to players like Jacobson - if you are a talented up and comer in the USA you are now miles behind the 8 ball compared to someone from somewhere else of equal ability - basically all of the current well-known American pros earned their chops pre-Black Monday)

It will be hard for the average American punter to relate to this victory outside of the purists, except maybe to his hot rail, relative to previous years.

Last year they had Reiss wearing the Calvin Johnson jersey, All-American kid etc, year before was the ex-addict come-good story of Merson from an urban area where most Americans live.

I think Van Hoof would have been an easier sell as a winner in the USA given he has that Dolf Lundgren/Terminator look about him and even plays that way.

As for out here I think this win will create barely a ripple - Jacobson is just basically unknown apart from us who follow live updates on PN; however, having said that he is the type of player who would come out here for an Aussie Millions and just crush the series (being a tournament specialist), unlike a Merson who is basically a cash game player, or Reiss who frankly isn't as good.

I just sat through the entire 16 hours of the final table - it's on youtube if people are interested.

Jacobson obviously played fantastic poker and fully deserved his win, but I really liked Stephensen's game as well. Considering how young and inexperienced he was at No limit holdem it was a phenomenal effort. For about 14 of the 16 hours he had the imposing presence of Van Hoof, with a massive stack and position on him just stare him down. Even though Van Hoof continually raised him and stole a lot of his chips Stephensen took it like a man and persisted. I reckon it's the best runners up effort in main event i've ever watched.

Van Hoof was also very impressive. The way he owned that table for so many hours was really something. He was somewhat unlucky that Jacobsen was able to get up off the canvas and eventually reel him in. You could tell Van Hoof was just a little off his game on the final day. That break did him no favours.

finally got around to watching the final table....

i thought you saw the difference in tournament specialists and tonking when they went down to 6 handed. The tourney guys instantly changed gears where as tonking just kept folding away.

you never know, he might have been concerned with the pay bump and was just waiting to outlast pappas and the short stacks.

van hoof was definitely off his game day 2. i loved the way he monstered the table on day 1.

jacobson was exceptional. played almost every situation correctly.
