O.K. we 've had the best AFL guernsey.
Who's got the worst? Remember Hawthorn's 'alternative' pre-season effort of a few years ago? Bloody terrible.
You know, the one that looked like jockey silks. Brown and gold diamonds on a navy blue background (only things missing were the caps and riding crops). Can any of yers think of a worse 'alternative strip'?

where's wally?

Freo's away jumper. What were they thinking?

What about Carlton's pre-season jumper a few years ago, with the white stripe down the middle.

It was almost as if the Blues marketing people couldn't think of what to do, so they said :

"Uh....just put a white stripe down the middle, and hope we sell a few. That'll do"

Good/acceptable:
Carlton
Collingwood
Richmond
North
Essendon
Brisbane
Melbourne
Geelong

Average:
St Kilda
Crows
Footscray

Shithouse:
Hawthorn (The standout winner)
Port (Close second)
Eagles (What is that on the front ?)
Swans (What the hell has an opera house to do with footy ?)
Fremantle (Someone at that club is colour blind)

Probably shows my age, but I prefer the more "traditional" guernsey. (Except when it is piss & brown)

Geelong had an absolute 'away' fizzer a few years back, I recall they announced it on the Footy Show and soon afterwards their members complained for the club breaking away it's traditional top.

Nearly all them. The purpose of an "alternate" jumper is to distinguish themselves from their "home" jumper. None of the current alternate strips do that.

Exactly. They create this brand new jumper for all the teams, yet it doesn't solve the problem of "jumper clashes". You've got to wonder about the logic sometimes.

The logic is quite simple, Dan24.

You bring out a new alternative guernsey and all the mindless consumers buy one.

It's got nothing to do with improving the Game as a spectacle by making it easier to tell the teams apart. It's about making money through the huge footy merchandising industry.

Yeah, but they could still do this if the "new" jumper didn't clash. See what I mean? They could create a new jumper to be used when there is a clash and KAZAAM, there is your new merchandising tool.

I wonder about the logic sometimes.

dockers is shocking.
hawthorn have been in the AFL for a long time and even though i wasnt around then i assume that when they were established those colors were in fashion or something. But freo is a new comer yet they still have a horrible jumper. its too complicated and the red and purple most defenatly dont go together. the only thing good about it is that they will never clash with anyone!!!

Footy. It was just a sport.
But now it's also a business.
However, according to the fans it's a religion,

Yawn.. Hawthorn was blue and white but when they joined the VFA (early 1900's) they clashed with Williamstown so changed to brown and gold (the hawthorn bush the susburb was named after) This was where the "mayblooms" comes from I think. The guernsey was brown with a gold 'V'. one year they tried a gold guernsey with a Brown 'V'and were nicknamed the 'Mustard pots' for obvious reasons.

In the early 50's the club had huge internal strife and when they emerged from that they got smone good people (Sandy ferguson, Roy Cazaly etc) and determined to become the best. Collingwood was the club to admire of the time so the stripes wer adopted when they copied that and a lot of other things. 'Hawks' was adopted at this time.

The rest is history but the jumper was a central issue in the 1996 turmoil and those hoping for it to be changed will be disappointed.

Apart from the 'jockey' pre-season jumper most of them have been quite good. The jockey one was done on the cheap and was a copy of the Brisbane Broncos. Didn't look quite so good without sleeves, mind you.

The current pre-season is inspired by the australia v ireland jumper which is th best football shirt I have ever seen in any code.
It has short sleeves.

Hawthorn generally has no colour clashes with other clubs but some others have changed theirs to be closer to Hawthorns.

WCE is a shocker because they look like hawthorn from one side and carlton from the other.

Richmond'salternate strip has a potential to clash if the design is close to Hawthorn's.

Enough detail, anyone ?

It's a bit like the Essendon Jumper... someone said "oh put a red sash on it, and we might sell a few, That'll do"
