could name half of norths fringe players from the last 5 years but the main names that stood out have to be

  • Kyron Hayden: midfielder playing in defence who couldn’t defend and hold onto the ball without getting caught or turning it over.
  • Kanye Turner: worst 100 game player for the club in the last 15 years, the fact he was in our leadership group just shows how much the club was struggling.
  • Atu Bosenavulagi: first few games were ok but anything he did in 2022 was terrible
  • Phoenix Spicer: how could someone with his speed get caught so easily and struggle to hold onto the ball like he did?
I liked Phoenix Spicer. I might be a bit biased as I barrack for the SANFL club North got him from. Yep the same club Jason Horne Francis was from, South Adelaide Panthers .

Even though he was only 170 cm . I had hopes for Spicer to make it. Short but quick I hoped he was gonna be a winger or small forward

Scott Gumbleton.
I can only remember him with back issues, but he looked horrible everytime I saw him play.
Harsh and unfair. 45 goals from 35 games.

I call it the curse of the talented Peel thunder ⚡ players.

Scott Gumbleton, Harley Bennell, Anthony Morabito and Daniel Wells all have things in common.

-All had talent

- all were drafted from Peel thunder in the WAFL.

- all of them had their careers stuffed with injuries. Daniel Wells somehow made it to 200 games

Yeah McKay is creeping up fast though
He did give us half a season of good footy last year. Recency bias will always excell in forums like this. As we have dropped off in overall team defence his weaknesses have been exposed. Being caught out in wide open spaces on more nimble opponents is asking for trouble and it’s obviously affecting his confidence. If we can have numbers back in defence, and opposition kicks are hurried or under pressure, then he can utilise his strengths in intercept marking and spoiling. It’s no coincidence that as we fell away last year he hasn’t been the same player.

Having said all that, I’m not happy with his recruitment at this point and his inability to handball and kick with any surety is anxiety inducing.

Plays for Footscray VFL now, maybe in the hope of getting redrafted to the big league. That's not going to happen as he's an average VFL player.

Michael Pettigrew. Somehow won a premiership.
Crazy.

I look at some of those Port players that lined up in that 2007 AFL Grand final.

I look at the back in that grand final. Burgoyne and Dom Casissi were in the back flank were solid. But the rest of the back 6.... Yeah the result didn't shock me

What I dont understand is how this guy has made it to almost 150 games. Still averaging 13 disposals as a midfielder.
I didn't mind Nice Suban. Yeah he is a small poo truck. But at least he has determination and the will to fight. I can't say the same to the dockers last weekend

Looking back, I don't think John Butcher was as bad as most people made out to be.

I mean freo had a similar player to John Butcher in Matt Taberner. Still kicked 170 odd goals from 130 games.

Butcher was more like Levi Casboult. He could mark the ball but his kicking technique was so awkward you didn't know what was going to happen when he got it.

I was at the Ess v Adel game and I mostly agree.

McKay had a shocker, but he and the other defenders sure weren't helped by the complete lack of pressure from the blokes up the field. Seeing Crows players just waltz forward and able to deliver it lace-out with no opposition - not much any defender can do with that.

Is he really that bad?

He looked ok in the SANFL a few years back before he played for North Melbourne in 2021.

He's not bad or great. Just average . Like a lot of small forwards , he doesn't get a heap of the ball so he goes missing. And doesn't kick big bags.
