Analysis Worst All-Australian selection of all time?

Trent Croad being named the 2005 AA CHB was certainly met with the most “really?” reactions that I can recall. When asked before the event what position was the hardest to choose the selector/s from On the Couch had said CHB was very challenging. I guess it was just a really weak year and someone had to be named in that position and Croad, despite being very underwhelming in that season, deserved it most.

Many of the AA CHBs are the most unimpressive players to make the team but it’s not their fault as you have to select the side with positional integrity. It doesn’t matter if nobody in that spot did anything all that spectacular; somebody has to be chosen for that role and unfortunately that individual can often be quite an unremarkable performer.

Definitely Shane Edwards, one of the most anonymous players going around. Touches the ball 20+ times in a game and you hardly notice him.

And that’s why Edwards is one of the most underrated players in the league. His handballing is one of the reasons why this facet of our game is hard to stop. He’s a major bridges from our midfield to our forward line. It’s why AA selectors selected him. They’re not immune from howlers of course, but Edwards ain’t one of them.

It was just the AA committee who rated his season better, it was across the wider AFL community

Everyone with football knowledge knows Daniel and Maynard were the far better HBFs that year, but Byrne-Jones was given a spot for some charity Port representation, and because he's an ugly mug with a mullet, so he stands out for the commentators on the selection team.

He was an AA in 2012. The year he was ranked as the 17th best ruck in the AFL.

Where was he ranked 17th?

Said it above but of the 4 candidates that year (Naitanui, Cox, Jacobs, Maric) Naitanui was the top ranked of them in the coaches votes, Brownlow votes and Champion data. So it wasn't just the AA committe that rated his year.
