Schimma was pretty ordinary, but admittedly he had little to work with in the early 90s.
I thought he was at least willing to try some innovative positional changes (trying Roberts, Carey, Martyn, etc in the ruck), some worked and some didn't, but I got the feeling he lost his way a little towards the end of 91, and start of 92 with some bizarre match-ups.
The only other coach I can really comment on is Pagan, because when the Roos were under Kennedy, Cable and Blight I was still too young to really understand tactics and manoeuvres.
While Schimma wasn't the best coach, he at least never stooped to the levels of sheer stupidity and inadequacy displayed by guys like Ayres, Judge, Williams, etc.

Malcolm Blight

He had a good side to work with but was too close to the players.
Should never have attempted the playing coach role, but I believe it was one of the lures to keep him at the club.
Since then he went away, learn't the ropes and was able to come back and coach sides without fear or favour, particularly with his playing personel.

Maybe Malcolm would be interested in 2 to 3 years in coaching the Kangas, it will be interesting now that Carey says he has at least another 5 years in him, to see if Pagan stays with us, as he always said that he would be their as long as he had Carey to coach.

Someone told me that Schimma used to go to training in a suit and that he would stand against the fence and send runners out to the boys to tell them what to do. Has anyone one else any knowledge of this? From a very reliable source I might add.

Grrh dont get me started on Tim Watsons ridiculous line ups! A guy who puts Spider Everitt in the backline (who might i add kicked nine goals against the Cats and they still lost) is not only the worst coach but has rocks in his farkin head!!!!

As for Blighty id say hed get Saints to a premiership or two then piss off and leave em for dead.

My fave coaches r Terry Wallace and Neile Daniher no doubt Sheeds is the greatest though. And nutter coaches well jeez that Chocco Williams and Damien Drum seem mighty strangeo!

From memory Schimma was bad, anyone who plays Johnny Longmire on a wing at Waverley.... needs to go home a have a good hard look at themselves... and I don't agree that he had no talent to work with... remember he let Timmy McGrath, Liam Pickering, Leigh Tuder, and Darren Steele go to Geelong...

In my time Schimma was one of North's Greatest Footballers but also one of our worst coaches...

Yep for me its Blight....
Was farcical to watch him as a player/coach
just to much pressure for one man even the
magnificent Malcolm..
Does anyone know if Blight was the last
Player/coach? I've been wracking my memory
and buggered if I can recall.

I think Ian "Bluey" Hampshire coached Footscray for the latter part of 1982 and then 1983, but I think he retired immediately upon his appointment as coach.
Therefore Blight would have been the last, yes.
