'Go Your Own Way' - Wilson Phillips.
(For those who don't know the original song, it's by Fleetwood Mac).

They also do a pretty poor version of 'You're No Good'. Linda Ronstadt did it justice, but the syrupy WP sound just doesn't work!

A great cover of "Go your own way" was by Seaweed. I love that track!

Spiderbait butchered Black Betty, took one of the best guitar and drum combo songs and turned it into a Cotton-Eye-Joe-esque piece of crap.
Although Ram Jam's version is the best and the guitar and drum solos kick ass, it isn't a song that you can out solo. It also has a 'boganish' sound. As much as I rate the Ram Jam version, I can't listen to it any more.

Usually I'm against covering songs that you can't outdo, but I think Spiderbait did a good (although inferior) job on this one. Trying to better the solos would have been pointless. What they did do however was modernise the song ever so slightly to make it acceptable to young listeners. There is a few parts in the song where there is a much fuller sound than the original which gives it cred.

As for the cotton-eye-joe stuff? It's actually an acknowledgement to the original. The original was written and performed by Hardy "Leadbelly" Leadbetter and had a lot of 'cotton-eye-joe esqe' slide.

On Spiderbait's version they are actually using two guitars. An open D tuning for the slide guitar and a drop D tuning for the normal guitar.

Just stick to your own material JF

Now, as I'm not much of a Johnny Farnham fan...I'd say it was absolutely CRINGE 'TIL YOU DIE when he decided that he do a cover of QUEEN's 'We WILL ROCK YOU' and in his live shows, he's stuff isn't 'tough enough' to get his own crowd excited so he has AC/DC 'It's LONG WAY TO THE TOP' as his finale...great songs totally urinated all over. Pi@@ Poor effort Johnny F.

DEVO's version is even better than the original... in my opinion anyway.

Ohh so many to choose, so little time.

Anyone that has attempted to do a cover of a Beatles song, could be "Tommorow Never Knows", "hey Jude" whatever, it's just not cricket! Same goes with any covers of Beach Boys, Elvis Presley or Michael Jackson covers...I don't know why some artist's bother, the originals are too much of classics to tap into and attempt to "make your own".

"The Logical Song" was a big mistake. and Jessica Simpson's offering of the classic; "Take My Breath Away" just makes it lose all meaning. same goes with anyone that attempts to do Aerosmith's "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing" and Trisha Yearwood's "How Do I Live?". Not to mention any covers of "Walk This Way" not done by Aerosmith and Run DMC, should be taken off the radio immediately, Sum 41 I'm talking about you!

I'm not a big fan of the U2/INXS, dance covers of late. I could stand DJ Sammy's offerings of Brian Adam songs, but I dont like the beat they're giving to good U2/INXS songs. Shannon Noll's "What About Me" was half the shade of the original. :(

However I do like Janet Jacksons version of "Son Of A Gun (I Betcha think The Song Is About You)" and the use of american Highway in "Somebody to call my lover". The Lady Marmalade covers aren't too bad either. Still the originals are great...hard to top. Bublé's spins on Sinartra, Van Morrison, and Tony Bennet songs are good too. Don't beat the originals but with a voice like that, he comes close. :)
Anyway with that all said; Bring back originality!

I hate Buble with a passion, you want to listen to a real jazz singer go and buy a kurt elling cd... and have your ears and heart filled with the true spirit of jazz.

Spot on.. again! Empty, souless machine like cover of a song that was full of balls and soul.

Oh hang on..empty, souless and machine like pretty much describes DEVO all round;)

Of some I've heard recently, NOFX do a cover of Iron Man which is pretty terrible... they just had nothing to add to the song, so they tried to do a pretty faithful version, and they absolutely couldn't cut it on any front. But then, they do a cover of Hotel California which is fresh and warped and ska-ified with horns, and is a real blast. A disrespectful cover like this brings out their best much better than a wannabe-respectful cover could.

Can I vote for "all of the above?"

I think for me it was all those assembly-line sugary-sweet techno ones that came out in the last couple of years or so.

I can just picture boardrooms of record executives somewhere taking wagers on who manufacture the bigger piece of garbage and make it successful.

"Lets take a Supertramp song and make it HIP!"

Funnilly enough, that episode was on Fox the othernight. I'd kept wondering over the past few months why I couldn't stand DEVO. Needless to say, not anymore.

I'm glad someone mentioned that. Spiderbaits version comes up all the time as being "not as good as the original because of the twangy guitars" - When questioned about the original, Ram Jam is always given as the answer.

It is actually a great version of the original.

In enjoyed this post until you got to here. At which point i decided that the thought of hearing Bublé do anything made me want to grab a cotton bud and poke my ear drums until they bled.
