Bad parenting is all around us, and we see examples of it every day. Who are some of the worst fictional parents you have seen in movies, TV shows, plays or in books? I nominate:
Mrs. George from Mean Girls (played by Amy Poehler) - Mrs. George doted on her bitchy teenage daughter Regina, and was a good example of a 'cool parent'. At one stage she tells one of her daughter's friends that if she wants to drink alcohol, she would rather them drink in the house. Mrs. George had a younger pre-teen daughter whom she completely ignored, and some scenes show the young girl watching inappropriate video clips and reality shows on television, her mother either not noticing or not caring.
Mr. Salt from Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory (played by Roy Kinnear) - The name Veruca Salt is synonymous with spoiled brats, and the enabler of this terribly spoiled girl was her father Mr. Salt, well portrayed in the 1971 film by the late Roy Kinnear. Possibly the most overly-indulgent fictional parent in history, Mr. Salt never once learned to say 'No' to his brat of a daughter.
Jim Brody from Freddy Got Fingered (played by Rip Torn) - While the events in this 2001 Tom Green comedy are cartoon-like, and the father was driven insane by the antics of his adult son Gord (played by Tom Green), hurling his son into a cabinet and through a shower screen, calling Gord's wheel-chair bound girlfriend a ******, throwing a glass bottle at his son, spanking Gord in public, shouting at anyone who got in his way and generally behaving like a maniac is hardly great parenting.
Sarah Braverman from Parenthood (played by Lauren Graham) - This comedy-drama is as the title suggests about the trials and tribulations of parenthood, and while all parents on the show have faults, this character has no redeeming features as a parent, and in the bluntest terms is a bad mother. Notably, her husband was an alcoholic drug abuser, but rather than put her children's interests first and leave him when the kids were young, stayed with him until her kids were teenagers, and screwed-up, something the flighty Sarah seems not to notice.
Mr. Perry from Dead Poets Society (played by Kurtwood Smith) - While misguided and authoritarian parents are hardly rare, this overly ambitious dictatorial father drove his son to suicide, and then refused to accept responsibility for it.
Darth Vader from Star Wars (played by James Earl Jones) - The other five parents look like great parents when compared to Darth Vader. As a young man, he abandoned his wife and their twin son and daughter (Luke and Leia) to join the dark side of the force. Later, he murdered his son's (and his own) mentor Obi-Wan Kenobi, conspired with evil Imperial War Lord Grand Moff Tarkin to destroy his daughter's home planet, attempted to lure his son to the dark side of the force and cut off his son's hand with a light saber.
