An opposite to the other Thread on here.

1. 1995 Grand Final v Carlton- This loss hurt the most. Entering the match with high expectations, I had no idea of the pain I was about to endure. And to top it off; of all teams why did it have to be to Carlton? :(
2. 1997 Semi Final v Adelaide- I don't think I've ever been angrier in my life. I was inconsolable for weeks after this game. The combination of anger and sheer devastation don't make a good one. I still just wonder if the Leigh Colbert mark was paid?
3. 1994 Grand Final v West Coast- I went out and got drunk after the game to try and forget it ever happened. And why did it have to be West Coast for the second time in three years?
4. 2008 Grand Final v Hawthorn- For obvious reasons.
5. 1992 Grand Final v West Coast- I entered this game with more confidence than ever. It looked like we were a better chance than ever to win a Flag. The thought of Peter Matera tearing us to shreds in the third quarter still irks me.
6. 1997 Qualifying Final v North Melbourne- From memory, we entered this game in white hot form, as unbackable favourites to win the match and flag favourites. But Wayne bloody Carey!
7. 1980 Preliminary Final v Collingwood- Oh, if Gary Sidebottom had have been picked up.
8. 1981 Preliminary Final v Collingwood- Losing a close Preliminary Final to Collingwood? Unbearable. Two close Preliminary Finals in a row to Collingwood? Hell on Earth.
9. Round 8 2006 v Collingwood- A very embarrassing night that was.
10. Round 10 2006 v West Coast- How the hell did we manage to lose after being 9 goals up halfway through the 3rd quarter?

For me....these would be my 10 worst games.

Round 7 1990....Geel 9.28.82 vs Richmond 13.18.96.

Simply the worst i have ever seen Geelong play, Richmond were about as good as they are now, and Geelong had won 4 in a row after a ghastly start to the year. Bews also did his knee in this game, and Gary Sr was a last withdrawal. But nothing prepared me to see Tigers playing like they did, and Geelong kicking terribly all round the ground including at goal. Went from about 5.5 to 5.20 from memory...Terrible!

Round 20 1986.....Hawthorn 35.15.225 vs Geel 13.12.90

Cats were less than a goal down at half time, and may have even touched the lead early in the 3rd. Then CRUNCH!!! Hawks kick 25 goals to just about zero and we suffered our biggest ever loss.

Round 1 1990.....Hawthorn 28.24.192 vs Geel 11.11.77

Same here, as Geelong grabbed the lead at the start of the 3rd quarter, before Dunstall and co smashed us stupid in the remaining time. Kicked about 19 goals to nil, and was seriously barely believable to watch live as i did.

Round 3 2006.....Hawthorn 15.11.101 vs Geel 6.13.49

Having won two games over the Lions and Kangas, and then getting a surprise phone call from my boss saying he had a couple of spare seats in the Hickey stand, i thought...Great, what a better way to see a 3rd win in a row. Again, Bartel got the Cats the opening goal of the 3rd quarter before suddenly all these Hawks i had no idea of started running everywhere, kicking goals and smashing us. A ghastly last half, and blokes like Ladson, Osborne and other no-names at that stage were making us look stupid. Kent Kingsley, fresh from his 8-goal haul against the Kangas is held goal-less by the bloke Rocca famously kicked 8 on the previous week, Zac Dawson.

Grand Final 1994....West Coast 20.20.140 vs Geel 8.12.60

After Andrew Wills played on and kicked agreat goal just before quarter time to give us a 1-point lead, i was thinking good thoughts. But the eagles machine kicked into motion, and Geelong sank into the abyss as the weather turned drizzly and cold...an appropriate end to a sad game for a Cat fan.

Round 4 1984....Kangaroos 11.13.79 vs Geel 9.11.65

Horrible windy day at Kardinia Park, Geelong were 3-0, kangas were 0-3, and had been whipped by 137 pts by the Blues in Rd 1. But Lyle dominates the ruck, the Krakouer brothers are untouchable...and had this amazing ability to kick floaters along the Moorabool St wing which the Westerly gale would have no effect on. And Geelong lost a game they should have won.

Round 9 1998.....West Coast 9.11.65 vs Geel 5.16.46

Another terrible windy day, and Geelong played about as badly as they did against the Tigers in that first game. Ronnie Burns had a shot from 20 metres out at the City end and the ball landed in the crowd about 25 metres from the Moorabool St behind post. Ugh!!

Round 14 1983....Richmond 10.10.70 vs Geel 10.9.69

A wet day at Waverley, and Geelong having beaten the Pies the previous round led by 28 points late in the 3rd quarter. With the Tigers having had five goals on the board in about 88 minutes of footy, they kick a goal on the 3.4 time siren and 4 in 6 minutes in the last to take a 2-point lead. Geelong spend 20 minutes rustling up one miserable rushed behind to lose by a point.

Round 15 1983......St.Kilda 18.12.120 vs Geel 9.14.68

O.K, having lost the previous week Geelong has a home game against St.Kilda with a 1-13 record. We lead 21-4 at 1/4 time. And then proceed to see a bottom side that had won maybe 15 games in 4 years suddenly play like superstars and massacre us by over 50 points at home!! 1983 wasn't a good year for Geelong at home, we won just two games there.

Round 9 2008.....Collingwood 20.14.134 vs Geel 7.6.48

Simply a huge case of WTF???? Pies play as good as any side i've ever seen, and we suffer what was to be one of only two defeats in a 45 game stretch. God knows how it happened, Geelong just moved on and won 15 straight, and the Pies have yet to work out how to play like that since!!

I'm surprised that there haven't been mentions of the "Nick Davis comes to save us" game.

As agonising at that was, we really tried our guts out, and had several players (King, Nablett, Ottens i think out or injured during the game. And it was a literally out of the @rse performance by Davis.

But these games in the main are efforts that were pathetic or skills that were just too bad to be true. That to my mind makes them worse games and ones that are imprinted on my memory bank.

Honorable Mentions -

Round 13, 1998 vs St. Kilda
Saved in retrospect by the win over WCE the next week, but standing there in the rain like an idiot for four quarters while we got flogged was painful.

R17 2000 vs North
Lost by a point and I wrecked my hand punching a seat in Colonial

Round 19, 2003 vs Geelong
A cold Friday night where we put in a pitiful performance. Memorable for footage of that guy yelling at Daniher over the fence.

Round 18, 2005 vs St Kilda
As our losing streak got some momentum we tried to rough up the Saints at the start and were completely embarassed. Lucky to lose by less than 100

Round 9 2007 vs North
Another one point loss sent us 0-9

Round 2 2008 vs Bulldogs
Almost as bad as Round 1... more on that later.

10 - R10 1999 vs Freo
Modra kicks ten despite me meeting him before the bounce and politely requesting that he didn't. Failed to give me any kind of mention in his post match interviews.

9 - 1998 Prelim Final vs North
I had convinced myself that we were about to involve ourselves in the miracle of the millenium and make the GF. We did bloody well to hang with them and be within miracle distance at 3qt but didn't get the job done.

8 - Semi Final 2002 vs Adelaide
The biggest rollercoaster I've ever seen. Painful.

7 - Round 6 2007 vs Port
0-6 and with 30 seconds to go McDonald pinged for deliberate. Went wild.

6 - Round 1 2007 vs St Kilda
Went in as premiership contenders, came out ready to fall to pieces.

5 - Round 2, 1999 vs St Kilda
On the day that Scott Chisholm got sledged by Spider I almost got murdered by the St Kilda cheer squad. Oops.

4 - Round 14, 1990 vs North
John Longmire kicks 14 in a 127 point victory

3 - Round 1, 2008 vs Hawthorn
I'd tried to convince myself all summer that '07 was an abberation and that we'd be back to '06 form, and then we got pulverised.

2 - Grand Final 2000
Blah

1 - Round 6, 1992 vs Essendon
41 points in front at 3QT, kick the first goal of the last quarter.... and lose by a point. I can never trust a lead until it's at least about 47 points these days.

Bloody Hell!! where to start? Towards the end there they all blended into one…

10. Round 9, 1996 North Melbourne 25.20. 170 def Fitzroy 9.11. 65 MCG
My brother ran out with the Roys that night and it was all down hill from there.

9. Round 6, 1992 Geelong 25.25. 175 def Fitzroy 11.11. 77 Kardinia Park
I just remember that sinking feeling of looking up to the scoreboard and realising Geelong had 50 scoring shots.

8. Night Grand Final Hawthorn 19.14. 128 def Fitzroy 8.15. 63 Waverley
We were all pumped up for this finally we were going to get some silverware, the crowd was probably 80/20 Roys supporters, and Hawthorn just did a number on us.

7. Round 1, 1995 Essendon 16.16 (112) def Fitzroy 6.2. 38 Western Oval
Everybody has high hopes for Round 1 and the promise of a new season, well that all evaporated by half way throught the 3rd quarter when we were 0.0 and for memory Essendon were 10.10

6. 2003 Qualifying Final Collingwood 9.12. 66 def Lions 7.9 51 MCG
Collingwood finished 2nd us 3rd, we had beaten them earlier in the year at the G and
This one was tight all night but for Didak (****) to kick the sealer, 3 weeks later though revenge was to be had.

5. 2004 Grand Final Port Power 17.11. 113 def Lions 10.13. 73 MCG
Weird feeling, almost felt sick ½ way through the last ¼ when I realised it was over but after having so much success in the years earlier it didn’t hurt as much as it could have.

4. Round 8, 2001 Carlton 21. 16. 142 def Lions 9. 14. 68 Princes Park
Fitzroy had announced their Team of the Century, all the past players were there and they witnessed the most insipid performance of any team ever, it was like they just didn’t care. But in hindsight it was the game that turned our season around, we lost the next week by a point but didn’t lose again until Round 5 2002.

3. Round 4, 1993 Adelaide 15.13. 103 def Fitzroy 15.12. 102 Football Park
Travelled over to Adelaide to sit with the ferals (yes Ed, they are ferals) not expecting much, for the Roys to put up a massive fight only to lose due to a bullshit freekick to Rod Jamieson, to this day I still hear commentators say it’s the only game where the result has truly been effected by an incorrect umpiring decision.

2. Round 21, 1995 Richmond 28.19. 187 def Fitzroy 5.6. 36 MCG
Last game ever in Melbourne, and by this stage you could tell the toll it had taken on the boys all of them were out on their feet and it was just painful to watch.

1. Round 22, 1996 Fremantle 24.13. 157 def Fitzroy 10.11. 71 Subiaco
Probably goes without saying this one, more like having a death in the family than a loss of a football match.

s**t, that was a depressing exercise I feel like I should go sit in the corner and slash my wrists.

Considering the context (at the time, Geelong were at the peak of their powers, and Collingwood were in very indifferent form), that has to be one of the strangest results of all time. I was out on the night and caught the score once the game had finished, and was truly shocked that we'd even won, let alone by so much. Watching it on tape during that week left me amazed.

Sure it wasn't 1991?

2 dodgy decisions the Crows way in the last minute..

The infamous Rod Jamieson free kick occurred during the final minutes of this game in 1991. The result that that royboy2 is referring to did indeed occur in this game in 1993, but didn't involve a Jamieson goal (he was goalless that night). IIRC, by that point in 1993, Jamieson was playing as a key defender, and Tony Modra was the Crows' full forward.

Andon - that was '68 and not '69 - Dad was tears at the game I've been told....

For me (10 to 1):

10. 1983 Grand Final - I think we got way too excited to be there and copped a decent old thumping. Live and learn.

9. 1981 Elimination Final - when you consider the winning run we had that year, to lose back to back back games at VFL Park was embarrassing - particularly how close we actually were to a potential premiership.

8. 1990 Grand Final - Peter Sumich's kick in the Qualifying Final that year still gives me nightmares.

7. 1999 Preliminary Final - got way ahead of ourselves.

6. 2001 Grand Final - One wonders if we were actually fully fit that day.

5. 2000 Round 21 against the Dogs - the reason I hate negative football. Good luck to Plough for coming up with it, but, I hated the idea.

4. 2010 Round 1 against Geelong - had the reigning premier on toast - then bloody Neagle.

3. 1992 Round 1 against Fitzroy - our first home game at the MCG after moving there full-time. Richard Osborne had a field day.

2. 1986 Elimination Final - bloody Mick Conlan.

1. 1998 Elimination Final - bloody North Melbourne.

In no paricular order: (apart from #1)

1. 1997 Preliminary final - The worst ever. Was absolutely shattered.
2. Last week vs West Coast. Just destroyed.
3. 2009 Preliminary final - To be so close, and then lose it. If we won that game, I genuinely believe we would have won the grand final.
4. Round 21 or 22 in 2005. Jeff White kicks the goal to keep us out of the finals.
5. Last year vs Geelong. Lost by 101 points. No idea why or how. But we did.

Cant think of many others at the moment.

I have more than 10 so I'll list the 10 I have before 2004.

1. ROUND 18 1989, Essendon 7.9 (Madden 3, Long, Clark, Plain, Salmon) def Footscray 3.5 (Cullen, Hawkins, O'Keeffe). Cold day, I was 5 years old and more interested in making gravel mounds behind the Geelong Road goals.

2. SEMI FINAL 1994, Melbourne 21.18 (Lyon 10, B.Lovett 3, Dyson 2, Lovell 2, Schwarz 2, Irving, Tingay) def Footscray 9.11 (Grant 2, Johnson 2, Kellett, Koster, Southern, Standfield, S.West)

3. ROUND 3, 1995, Carlton 23.20 (Kernahan 10, Gleeson 3, Ratten 3, Bradley 2, Silvagni 2, Camporeale, Christou, Dean) def Footscray 8.12 (Smith 2, Grant, Grgic, Kolynuik, Osborne, Romero, Standfield). I remember badgering the old man to race home from the dump for this one, probably should have stayed in the dump.

4. 3rd QUALIFYING FINAL, 1995, Geelong 24.11 (Brownless 6, Breuer 5, Tudor 3, Hocking 2, Lord 2, Mensch 2, Riccardi 2, Sanderson, Tanner) def Footscray 10.13 (Grgic 3, Osborne 3, Hargraves, Kellett, Smith, Watts). So much for staying up late on a Saturday night to watch it....

5. Round 12, 1996, Sydney 18.15 (Lockett 4, Luff 3, Chapman 2, Mooney 2, O'Brien 2, Grant, Kelly, Kickett, Maxfield, Rose) def Footscray 11.11 (Smith 3, Hargraves 3, Grant 2, Liberatore 2, Watts). Just watch Year of the Dogs for this one. We didn't really see much of the Doggies in Darwin in 1996 (we only got 2 TV games a weekend in those days, Saturday and Sunday afternoon) but in reality we just didn't get close and I couldn't get excited save for a couple of Libba goals.

6. 2nd PRELIMINARY FINAL, 1997, Adelaide 12.21 (Jarman 3, Jameson 2, Smart 2, Goodwin, McLeod, Rehn, Rintoul, Sampson) def W.Bulldogs 13.13 (Cook 6, Grant 2, M.West 2, Brown, Dent, Hudson). Nuff said except I nearly smashed a car window.....

7. 2nd PRELIMINARY FINAL, 1998, Adelaide 24.17 (McLeod 7, Robran 6, Edwards 2, Ellen 2, James 2, Vardy 2, Connell, Jarman, Johnson) def W.Bulldogs 13.15 (Hudson 5, Johnson 2, Smith 2, Croft, Grant, Montgomery, M.West). Had such high hopes especially after finish to the season and the qualifying final thumping of the Eagles. Wallet stuffed the tactics up and arguably a more talented group than 1997 lost their chance.

8. 2nd SEMI FINAL, 1999, Brisbane 19.12 (Akermanis 3, A.Lynch 3, Molloy 3, Johnson 2, Keating 2, Lawrence 2, Leppitsch 2, McRae, B.Voss) def W.Bulldogs 10.13 (Grant 4, Hudson 2, Curley, Johnson, Darcy, Powell). Had to put up with the footy boys giving lots of s**t about Brisbane winning big time at the presentation night which went on at the same time, then of course Lynch and his choking sign......

9. ROUND 14, 2003, Hawthorn 23.16 (Thompson 5, Rawlings 4, Dixon 3, Lekkas 3, Barker 2, Crawford, Hay, Hodge, Ries, Tallis, Vandenberg) def W.Bulldogs 12.11 (Croft 2, Eagleton 2, Giansiracusa 2, Johnson 2, Bandy, Bowden, Brown, Garlick). No fight in the first half, gladly left TV room to watch the FTA game involving Fremantle and Brisbane to see just how footy should be played. I believe others walked out of this game as well early.

10. ROUND 21, 2003, St.Kilda 13.17 (Gehrig 3, Ball 2, X.Clarke 2, Powell 2, Dal Santo, Hamill, Harvey, Koschitzke) def W.Bulldogs 3.12 (Giansiracusa, Johnson, Power). Cold wet day in Launceston, we played like a disinterested team that didn't look like scoring anything most of the day let alone a goal.

Not in any particular order.

Round 13, 1998 v Brisbane Lions at Kardinia Park- Prior to this match, we had won 5 on the trot, sitting 4th on the ladder, and facing a depleted and last-placed Brisbane at home. Lions were about as bad as they are now, if not worse. We were absolutely putrid and went down by 26 points, season spiralled downwards after this game.
Geelong 12.8 (80) def. by Brisbane Lions 15.16 (106)

Round 6, 1999 v Hawthorn at Kardinia Park- Had won our opening 5 games easily and were sitting on top of the ladder undefeated. Led for most of the day but lost by 2 after Shane Crawford booted the winner, season went downhill from there and we then proceeded to lose our next 9 games. All those very close losses against Hawthorn at KP in the late 90's (spanning from 1995-1999) could rate a mention also.
Geelong 14.14 (98) def. by Hawthorn 14.16 (100)

Grand Final 2008 v Hawthorn- No explanation needed.

Grand Final 1995 v Carlton- Ditto.

Round 22, 1996 v Carlton at Kardinia Park- Grand Final rematch, played absolutely terrible and got belted. Cost us a top 4 spot too from memory.
Geelong 9.11 (65) def. by Carlton 16.11 (107)

Round 11, 1994 v Brisbane Bears at Kardinia Park- Embarrassing loss to the last placed Bears at home.
Geelong 15.11 (101) def. by Brisbane Bears 19.12 (126)

Semi Final 1997 v Adelaide at Football Park- Leigh Colbert mark not paid, having to travel to Adelaide despite finishing 2nd on the ladder.

Round 17, 2002 v Adelaide at Kardinia Park- Up by 3 goals in the last quarter from memory, threw it away with inaccurate kicking. Cost us a finals spot, big punch-up on the ground involving spectators during the kick-to-kick on the ground after the game, Gary Ayres (Adelaide coach at the time) carries on like a drunken buffoon towards the Geelong supporters in the Brownlow Stand and even flips the bird towards the crowd at one stage.
Geelong 12.18 (90) def. by Adelaide 15.3 (93)

Round 3, 1998 v Sydney at SCG- Lost by 103 points. Enough said.

1994 Grand Final v West Coast- Dominated the Eagles in the first term, only to lead by a point at quarter time, before everything went downhill from there.

Good to see you've expunged the disaster that was 2006 from your memory.

Didn't make enough room there for 2006. Just hought it might be a little worthwhile to bring up some older, more forgotten matches to test my memory rather than those as recent as 2006. The games in 2006 v the Pies in Round 8, Eagles in Round 10, and Hawks in Round 3 would otherwise definitely rate mentions.

Those are three contenders, the Melbourne game at the G that year was also extremely painful, as was losing to Richmond at KP for the first time in 16 years after kicking 1.9 in the last quarter.

Up by 5 goals at half time. Collingwood kicked 6 goals to none in the third quarter, Adelaide worked their back in front, then in the last minute Ben Rutten gives away a highly disputable holding free. John Anthony kicks the goal, Crows lose.

Our match against the Swans Rd 2000, we just lost, but played poorly.

That's probably the worst match I've seen us play

Round 6, 1999 v Hawthorn at Kardinia Park- Had won our opening 5 games easily and were sitting on top of the ladder undefeated. Led for most of the day but lost by 2 after Shane Crawford booted the winner, season went downhill from there and we then proceeded to lose our next 9 games. All those very close losses against Hawthorn at KP in the late 90's (spanning from 1995-1999) could rate a mention also.
Geelong 14.14 (98) def. by Hawthorn 14.16 (100)

The game the following week against the previously winless Freo was worse IMO. We were 17 points up at 3/4 time, but Freo kicked 7.5 to 2.1 in the last term to win by 17 points themselves.

Another game against Freo in 2005 at Skilled was shocking too. The Dockers had invented a game plan where they'd have utilise a huddle 40m up the field from the guy with the ball, and then lead out to the flanks, and then move the huddle further down the field. Was stop-start football all day which was boring to watch, but it was effective. They led by 9 points at 1/4 time, and were able to hold on to win by the same margin.
