I was on the train the other day, when the guy standing next to me started harking and spitting. I thought he was choking so being the nice guy that I am, I gave him a nice old slap on the back to help him clear his throat. He turns around and has a go at me. Evidently he was talking in his native tongue - Lebanese. What sort of pathetic language is that? It sounded like he was chatting up a camel.....

Did anyone else laugh as much as me when they read that, thats gold! :D

As I've said: Portuguese = Spanish for the mentally challenged. It's still one of the rrrrrromance languages though.

Portuguese grammar is harder than Spanish IMHO though. Can't stand the German accent personally, French-Canadian is not too good either.

i know a french-canadienne who was born in poland and listening to her talk is just painful.

@dr nick, There are total 22 languages with official recognition in India, and there are many, MANY more languages with a considerable amount of speakers. BTW Hindi is the language which a majority of the people speak...

Learning to speak Hindi may be quite difficult for mother tongue english speakers because of having a large number of consonants and vowels. But I don't think Hindi can be one of the worst sounding languages in the world, because it is balanced in intonation, modulation, pronunciation and etc. etc. (end of thinking capacity :p).

Isn't there a version of the Arabic language where the word for 'bread' is that disgusting throat clearing, phlegm sucking sound

So if you are sitting at the table and want to ask someone to pass the bread you say, "pass me the.......hyuckkkkkkkkkkkkk huckkkkk "

It must put everyone else off their dinner

why the hate for vietnamese in this thread? Girl I hung out with spoke vietnamese on the phone to her mother and her mother's family, I thought it sounded cute.

Hindi I can take it or leave it. Worked with a largely Indian sales team (telecoms, of course) and picked up a couple of phrases, but it was so hard to keep up with them talking.

You speak Dutch, French, Italian, German, Suzi? Hmmm. Interesting.

To be fair south african dutch and german are practically the same, and french + italian are similar enough that if someone spoke one perfectly, learning the other would only take a few months if that.

I found Jibberish to be the most annoying language Oh and the slang that Teens seem to using these days...

Welsh, Gaelic and Arabic are all pretty tough to listen to as they are very "throaty" for lack of a better word.

Most Asian languages are nice as they have a melodic sort of tone to them. A southern Italian girl speaking Italian or broken English in a heavy accent is my kryponite though.

I dont really mind the 'throaty' stuff. I probably couldnt speak it but as long as it's not over done it's bearable and I think Mongolian throat singing is really cool, reminds me of ghengis khan.

But in saying that I like South african accents to. My favorite though is easily south American spanish/Portuguese.

I find bad English very cringeworthy. There are people in the world who know 3+ languages, and yet some who can't even speak the one they're supposed to know properly.

As for others, i think all the Jap kind of ones sound the weirdest, just like a long list of onomatopoeia rather than words, dun tin tow ton duk duk hur.

Most european languages/accents make me a jelly legged fool though. Especially stuff like German, Norweigan, Swedish, etc.
