There's bound to be a stack of shockers and would like to find out which footy club/s you think have the worst or most unusual nicknames (outside of the AFL).

Here's a sample to get the ball rolling.

Yarrawonga Pigeons (Ovens & Murray FL)
Devenish Barbers (Benalla & District FL)
Port Melbourne Boroughs (VFL)

Before it's temporary recess/ reformation a couple yr ago Tarpeena were the'Canaries' ( in those days if the emblem matched the state of some of the players on game day it should have been a bottle, or bottle with small section of hose hanging out one side, thankfully things have improved a little...)

Southern League has some rippers but the best/worst one was the old Flagstaff Hill nickname. Before they changed their name to the Falcons they were the Bushpigs!

Add to that:
Port Noarlunga ****ledivers
MorphettVale Emus
Reynella Wineflies
Noarlunga Shoes

Yeah, you wouldnt believe how many times I have to explain this to mates and family as its the team I played for.

Noarlunga is actually a club steeped in history, over 100 years old. If you look at the way the Onka bends around the township of Noarlunga (now known as Old Noarlunga) you'll notice it's in the shape of a horseshoe, hence the horseshoe or shoe always being our emblem.

Just on ordinary nicknames, what's with the East Perth Royals?

Im just imagining a big eared Charlie being their emblem.

What's the history behind that name?

Spot on, ****ledivers takes the cake, even bigfooty censors it - add to that list Flagstaff Hill Bushpigs, although have have changed it in the last 10 years to the "Falcons"

Always thought Swans was a pretty gay name - should have just stayed as 'The Bloods'.

'Dockers' is pretty crap as far as names go as well.

My old team in Melbourne, the North Coburg Saints, used to be known as St. Olivers and had the nickname of BOPS. BOPS stood for Blessed Oliver Plunketts and that was what the team was known as prior to being changed to St. Olivers.

So when I was 12 yo, we would run out and say, "Go Boppers!!"

Didn't have 'BOPS' ... will have to add that one!

Here's all the nicknames I've come across. Just added 'Squids' today ... apparently its an alternative nickname for Port FC in the Spencer Gulf FL.

Shall we nominate a few and poll our favourite 'weirdarse nicknames'?

The old Salesians College team in the SA Amatuers was known as the" Violet Crumbles" due to the distinct colouring of our gurnsey, purple and yellow.

C'mon you Peckers, c'mon you Peckers,
It's the Woody Woodpecker song.
C'mon you Peckers, c'mon you Peckers,
And we're yelling it all day long.
For we never give in
Cos we know it's a sin
And we fight right to the end.
C'mon you Peckers, c'mon you Peckers,
It's the Woody Woodpecker song!

Straight out of a Woodville annual report. I kid you not.

Originally names were very symbolic of power .
The "blood angels of death " still scares anybody .
In the WAFL you had the Royals (Monarchy was big then),the Cardinals(you can't get bigger than the pope) and the Demons(with emphasis on demonic)

The Goon! Who the hell are they?

UTS Bats (Sydney FA) - no one will tell me how they got that one.

Nar Nar Goon.

I think my Bats reference is to Goorambat, actually.

But check for yourself if you want. Go to site in my signature and choose 'Index to Nicknames'.

Who are the Cream Puffs? That's a shocker.

I think it's a Northern Territory side.
