Andy McLeod for Chris Groom

C'mon MD, you're old enough to know that this isn't quite true.

there is a difference between how things worked out in the end, versus the bargain struck at the time.

From a Brisbane perspective to get only Troy Lehman and Craig Starcevich for Nathan Buckley.
again, why?

the deal was any 2 players not in the top 10 'out of bounds' list of excluded players.

Edit: You failed to mention one of their worst trades. Nuggety tagger, Chris Bond crossed from Richmond in exchange for pick 2 in 1997 (Brad Ottens) I could be wrong about the year, but I'm pretty sure it was a number 2 pick. The Dockers saw something in Bond they were lacking (toughness and leadership) but he never really gave them much of a return on their investment - 2 seasons I think, then he retired.
spot on. pretty sure it was the ottens pick

I still cringe at that one.

What did Kangaroos get for Carey?
pick 4 essentially.

some other elements, but broadly speaking pick 4.

which was good enough to pick up Jarrod McVeigh or Tim Walsh. when it got upgraded, it was then good enough to pick up wells.

so not that much harm either way.

Adrian battiston from melbourne to Sydeny in the 80's for truck loads of money. I bet he is still smoking Havannas in the Bahamas.

Shannon Corcoran Bulldogs to Brisbane to Sydney. One of Rockets duds that helped put him in the spiral downwards at Sydney.

Mate in 100 years of trying you will never convince that giving up a pick we knew was either Haselby or Pavlich for a ruckman that couldn’t ruck was a good move let alone not a disastrous one.

Not only did we pass up a gun which ended up being Pavlich, we took a player that was incapable of playing his position to an AFL level as proven by his omission in 2003 and subsequent delisting. To say he was a key part of 2002 is just wrong. The truth is he was a key to us losing a flag in 2002. We lost that GF in the ruck. McKee did play a vital role in the QF v Port but contrary to popular belief he didn't beat Primus he made sure the ruck was a contest and the clearances went to the better contesting midfield. Had we not taken him in 1999 we may very well have been forced to have taken a real ruckman who we may have helped us win in 2002 and who we may still have today as the only decent ruckman on our list (Fraser’s very good around the ground work notwithstanding. At the very least we would have had Pavlich in 2002, 2003, today and for the next 8 or so years.
Spot on. I remember telling a few Collingwood supporter mates in 2002, that Mckee was more important than Buckley to their finals chances. They couldn't believe what I said. Mckee neutralised Primus' dominance which gave their midfield a chance in the QF whilst Buckley sat in the stands. In the GF, Buckley plays a pearler but Mckee was smashed by Keating.

Actually, we got pick 6 from Richmond as well, essentially Bond was traded for a pick 4 spots higher.
Pick 6 was traded to Brisbane for Adrian Fletcher - who did have a few great years for us (won a b&f), but was never going to do more than that given his age at the time.

Yep, once the dust settled that one worked out as being the Wells trade from memory. Given we paid such a small amount for him from the Swans, all up I think it's fair to say we got our money from Carey, in spite of all the other issues.

To be fair to Freo, Chris Groom looked like being a gun. He went to Freo and did his knee, got traded to the Kangaroos and did his knee again, then retired. Unlucky.

I was always disappointed with Brenton Sanderson for Brett Chalmers.
ding ding! correct answer. :D

Groom was looking a right stud at the time. some at the club didn't want to do that trade.

sure he got injured, but geez, what's that got to do with the trade at the time.

And the point of this thread is? You won't hear any of us denying that we had rubbish management in the early years, even if the opening post relies on the myth that we "could have had Lloyd".

Great to see pies posters contributing though, who passed up Pavlich for featherweight Fraser again?
who'd you get for Clement and Holland again???

nah mate i think u won that last trade aye to be honest. u got fletcher who won a bf in 99 im pretty sure and doubled the second place getter. hence you getting 3 picks in the top 5. well after a few trades but anyways, brisbane picked up cupido an absolute dud through out his entire career. even james hird couldnt aspire him to achieve his potential. didnt play much for the lions so i guess u won.

Michael for Molloy. I can't recall if that was just a straight trade or whether there were other picks/players involved but IIRC we gave little or nothing other than Molloy to get arguably the best fullback in the league over the last 6 years.

Todd Ridley for Draft compensatory selection (Matthew Lloyd)

Tony Delaney for Pick #4 (Scott Lucas)

Andy McLoed for Chris Groom

Jess Sinclair and picks 6 & 8 for Peter Bell (when they had him in the first place)

Jeff Farmer for Phil Gilbert (14 games)

Pick #17 (james Kelly) for Jeff Farmer (they could have had him all along)

Phil Matera for David Hynes (13 games)

Pick #1 for Trent Croad (great player now, but offered Freo nothing) (pick #1 hodge ball judd????)

Adrian Fletcher for pick #5 (luke Power)

Darryl Wakelin for Douglas Headland (0 games)

David Wirrpunda for Tony Godden (11 games)

Chad Morrison for Brendan Krummel (1 game)

Steven King for Stephen O'Reilly (98 games)

All these trades involve Freo, gee they have made some massive blunders over the years LOL!!! given the draft picks given away for players such as Tony Godden and Brendan Krummel doesnt mean they would have wirrpunda and King etc, but those picks were used for those players.
Well done son. You have managed on your fourth post to prove your are un original and you dont know very much about your chosen subject.
You no doubt know all about your team's success in 2006. So please tell us about it.

Just because I tell things how they are. Mantis we are 1-8 and on the bottom, do you honestly think we should all keep things positive.

Oh yeah, down at windy hill the rivers flow of chocolate, the birds sing, and the dogs laugh, everything is rosy!!!

We are last!!! Get it LAST! WHY ARE YOU CONTENT WITH THIS!

I am embarassed and ashamed of Essendon myself.
Good thing you're not a Bomber fan.

I can't recall any really bad trades, then again Sheeds is to cunning when it comes to trades to be screwed over to badly.

Actually it was pick 5 + 21 (which we used to draft Clem Micheal).

Interesting stat is that Drummie never won a game when Clem was not playing.

Any of you young-uns who don;t know of Clem Micheal just look at Micheal Johnson and add 50%.

Damm shame He did his knee.

Did he ever play WAFL or amateur league or did he stop playing the game completely at 24ish? As you said Ripper damn shame, at times he looked as good as the old man, who was one of my all time favourite players.

Ok mate, yeah we are struggling, but I have seen plenty of success in the last 20 years and as I recall, didn't we knock you out in the 2003 finals serious at home by say "44 odd points". I can positively say that Essendon will win ANOTHER flag before freo do.

As for my chosen subject, it all happened mate, all you have to do is look at the research. Take a look a get back to me!

Cheers buddy!
