Worthless Cup Final - it's UNITED vs the Dirties

I agree with your sentiments about the Worthington Cup.

Considering the Finals Participants at least its a decent finale this year for the Worthless Cup!!!!

Hopefully we can get our hands on a bit of silverware it may be our only opportunity........

Go The Reds!!!!!!!

Well at least WE can say we're going to Cardiff :D

There are plenty of teams out there who would KILL for some Silverware.

And in the last few years, the Big clubs have decided to take it a lot more seriously.

Go those Mighty Reds !!!

It may only be the Worthington Cup Final, but any opportunity to beat Manchester United and add to our trophy cabinet will make it worthwhile.

GO LIVERPOOL!!

I watched the match on Fox, and I must say, I was proud of the players, in particular McEveley, Tugay, Thompson and of course Friedel.
Duff's injury was the turning point of the match. With him on the pitch, our confidence can be booming. Without him, well, we are a different team.

The same goes for Friedel. Without him, the scoreline would have been very, very ugly.

The amount of times Scholes was unmarked really got to me. I know Man United are stocked with stars that you must keep track of, but you can't focus too much on Beckham, RVN and co. We needed to really give Scholes no free space.

Gutted by the loss, proud of the effort.

That'd be about 7 from 6 for the Ginger Ninja? Will have to catch the reply on Fox (if they're kind enough to give us one)

Blackburn Rovers 1 (Cole)

United win 4-2 on aggregate

(or if you used DanMaths "aways goal count double" method, United win 7-3).

Quite clearly you show a luck of understanding for the game Shinners. The aggregate result was:

Manchester United 6.5
Blackburn Rovers 1.5

They just round up to the nearest number for the mass media. In Kenya however, the actual result is shown in it's true form.

Yeah, that's true. I was having a chat to Hilly (or it may have been the Hitman) and I said that it's one thing for United, and to a lesser extent Liverpool, fans to take the Worthless Cup as something of an inconvenience, but if Sheffield United had gotten through to the final and won it, it probably would've been the highlight of their lives for plenty of Blades fans.

I wish I could care about winning the Worthless Cup, however, beating the thieves from the slum end of the East Lancs Road will bring me more joy than getting the trophy itself.

And in the last few years, the Big clubs have decided to take it a lot more seriously.

The Dirties seemed to take it seriously as it was a part of their plastic treble, but UNITED only took is seriously this season as our poor early form meant that we could have missed out on a European place with a poor season in the premiership and that winning the Worthless Cup would give us an entry into the UEFA Cup. I would thnk that if United had a strong start next season, we'd be back to sending out our reserves side again.

As a Rover fan, winning the Cup last year was a big deal for the club, espeicially after coming out of a relegation troubled few years.

For the fans of the lesser clubs, such as myself, winning a cup is a huge boost. Winning that cup last year was a huge confidence booster for the club, as shown by the team doing alot better this season.

Oh well, this year we'll go one better. FA Cup!:p

Er, have you forgotten about your Championship win back in 1994/95?

I meant winning the Worthington Cup was a huge boost considering we were relegated, lost players such as Sutton, Shearer and players of a similar ilk, played Division 1 for two years straight and then got into a promotion battle in 2000/2001.

After all that, the win in the Worthington Cup was a huge boost to a horrendous run. It was vital to maintaining the clubs confidence and keeping player such as Duff interested in playing for Blackburn.

Fair enough Matty.

I have to say though, I think Blackburn are in better shape for a long stay in the Premiership than what they were when they were financed by Jack Walker and managed by Dalglish. Whilst it's hard to argue with the Championship that Dalglish led Blackburn to, there was always the feeling that Blackburn would return back to Division One once the Walker money disappeared and all the highly payed players left.

It seems to me that Souness has been able to get a good mixture of experience and youth for long term stability. As long as Souness is at Rovers, I reckon you'll stay in the Premiership pretty comfortably.

Definately. Our drop to Division One was a huge blow, and losing someone like Shearer is crushing and when quality players left, we were stuffed and had to rebuild totally.

Souness is an character that's for sure, but with him, we are a mainstay in the Premiership in my books. Signed players such as Friedel, Cole and has kept Duff here and has a good knowledge of the game.

The battle to win promotion and put us on the right track, winning the Worthington Cup was a reward for the signings and the hard work put in, while getting a UEFA cup spot also was a much needed factor in maintaining the hunger for success.

We have alot of young quality talent now. Duff, Dunn, Taylor, McEveley, Neill, Thompson, Jansen along with some older guys in Friedel, Cole, Tugay and Yorke - not including the signing of Sukur.

We are in a good position, with a manager that's not afraid to rattle the cage and shake things up a bit to get wins.
