Wot? No Essendon?? - Federation Cup Match

Hi all

Collingwood and Carlton will play off on May 6 next year for the Federation Football Cup as part of the centenary of federation celebrations.

*sigh* I feel cheated. Why not Fremantle vs Port Adelaide for the cup instead?

Carlton and Collingwood love to think their matches appeal to the rest of the community, when actually, most of us don't care. Hence, their obsession with the Millennium game which was a fizzer, as we all know.

Since Essendon was in the topic name, I will just say something : Even though we have won 2 more flage than the Pies and the same number as Carlton, Essendon have generally over their history, gone about their winning with less bragging, gloating and "boisterousness" than Collingwood and Carlton.

This is probably why Collingwood and Carlton are linked together so often, while Essendon, who has achieved the same amount (or more) success than both of them, has often been the happy watcher, out of the spotlight.

Becasue this may seem like a bit of "Dan24 crap (which it is not), I will quote a piece out of a Herald-Sun liftout, I kept from 2 years ago. It says this :

"Essendon has always remained a consistent acheiver. It has remained at the forefront, without the glamour or boasting of Collingwood or Carlton, yet has a rich history of success, the equal of any other club"

Essendon don't need gimmick matches, or "hype". We create our own "hype". It's not manufactured.

Gezz u make it sound like Essendon has been robbed!

Which they havent!

U read that news article again and u will see Essendon are still playing for one against West Coast at colonial!

U essendon ppl think u should have everything u may as well run the Afl!

The saying is true what essendon want is what essendon get! Sorry!

Mags,

Di you even read what I said ? am quite happy to be out of the spotlight. I is not historically the Essendon way to go with the "hype", or "boastings' of Collingwood and Carlton. I'd rather let the club speak for itself with the results.

Our "big" matches, are big becasue they have earn't that title becasue of our performances. The Round 20 match against Carlton in front of 91,500 was HUGE because it was played between two "in-form" teams. Not because it was "hyped" up to be something that it isn't.

Carlton-Collingwod match-ups, more so than any other match-up, are "hyped" to be more than they deserve to be, for years now.

Carlton and Collingwood can have their little "celebratory" match-up. Esendons big match-ups are big becasue we have earn't the hypw. Not becasue the hype hs been manufactured.

How could we forget the "last suburban battle" last yar at Optus Oval. What a fizzer ! It wasn't even a sell-out !

Dan,
The round 20 game was hyped as well not coz of form!

And yes i did read what u wrote and there will be alot of essendon that will think that the deserve another cup to the little trophy place down there at windy hill!

As for Collingwood playing for this fedartion cup, I think its aload of bullshit it means nothing to me!

The Round 20 match was hyped becaasue it deserved the hype from the form of the two teams.

That is COMPLETELY different from, say the "last suburban Battle", where ALL the hype is manufactured.

"Nearly" all Carlton-Collingwood matches are like this.

I know the hype of the game at optus oval was over the top and it shouldnt have been! That game should have been played at the G too! But cant change that can we? No

It's not just collingwood and carlton games hyped Dan there are alot more! Including Essendon too!

Dan,

Using the so called "Millennium Game" to make your point proves nothing! It was ALWAYS going to be a fizzer and nothing more. I mean, where would you have wanted to have been, December 31st, Just before the New millennium. Sitting at the G? I bloody doubt it!!

ALso, maybe the Pies and the Blues do like the lime light. SO WHAT???? There is nothing wrong with that. They both have a very, very proud History. Essendons style is that they perfer to stay out of the spotlight.

Yeah, you've got me on Anzac Day.

Still, the crowds are sensational for Anzac Day. For Carl-Coll, the crowds often don't live up to the hype, because the games are billed as something they are not.

This years Anzac day game was worth the hype. Essendon was 6-0, and the Pies were 5-1 entering the match.

For somebody who doesn't want the hype or attention you sure do post a lot of pointless trash Dan.

Dan,

I do take your point about a Collingwood / Carlton fixture having to manufacture hype as one of those teams is a perennial cellar dweller. I do agree if you had Essendon / Carlton playing in a fixture such as this the game would tend to hype itself as both teams have been consistent top 4 performers over the past few years. The hype would be generated from the prospect of a top quality contest.

I do have trouble when you say Essendon don't manufacture hype? Your coach is a one man hype machine! He deliberately goes out of his way to hype the Essendon Football Club. Some memorable highlights are:
  • The Marshmellow War with North Melbourne
  • Jacket waving with West Coast
  • The seagull affair (WC)
  • Numrous sightings of martians (Everyone)
  • Arrogant Bombers (Richmond / Rogers)
  • ...

This list was one I came up with straight off the top of my head without even trying. We could dedicate a thread to listing Sheedy hypes as it would attract hundreds of posts.

My point is ultimately, Essendon do their fair share of manufactured hype as well. My only greivance is that Richmond don't get out and spruik themselves as much!

------------------
This is a hallucination and these faces are in a dream. A computer generated environment; a fantasy island you can do anything and not have to face the consequences.

I don't think Sheedy waved his jacket with the aim of creating hype. Same with the seagull, thing. Often, things are a spur of the moment decision.

Anyway, I am talking about Essendon's overall history, and how do you "define" it ?

A lot of the stuff Sheedy does is "gamesmanship".

Even though we have won 2 more flage than the
Pies and the same number as Carlton, Essendon have generally over their history, gone about their winning with less
bragging, gloating and "boisterousness" than Collingwood and Carlton.
Making up for lost time now though Dan?
