Could present day NSW beat either of these traditional powerhouse state teams?

I've seen a lot of people over the last few days debate where State of Origin footy goes from here but one thing that keeps popping up is this belief that NSW, QLD, Tasmania and the NT wouldn't be competitive. While I can see the logic behind the last two states/territory mentioned, most people seem to be either completely unaware or underrating the talent that's come out of New South Wales over the last 10-15 years. Have a look:

So, would New South Wales team be competitive in an AFL State of Origin fixture? My opinion - I think NSW could absolutely be competitive with the weakest of the big three states (South Australia) and may even be able to beat them but I doubt they'd get close against Victoria or Western Australia. We also know the Swans and Giants academies are going to continue to increase the amount of top level prospects coming out of NSW so they are probably going to get even stronger over the next 5-10 years.
Problem isn't the best 22, take
4-5 random names out of the 22 for injury and then the replacements are horrible.

However that shouldn't stop them from playing, if they are the best in their state they are the best in their state.

I'd love to see that team compete in a proper SoO carnival. They'd definitely be competitive with S.A., though underdogs, and would acquit themselves well against Vic and WA. To be honest, I'd rather have a fixture where each team played each other once, and a SoO carnival, as well as other practice matches, every pre-season. Would be great for the game, and wouldn't increase injury risk compared with regular practice matches.

IMO I think we'd give SA a big fight (though they're in a down trough as things stand) but WA and Victoria would probably be a bridge too far, though it probably won't be a blowout. So yeah, I think so.

That midfield would be hot garbage against any other state side. Forward line is way too tall, and Blakey nowhere near the level required for SoO yet. The interchange is laughable too.

NSW could put up a very good list of 15 players or so, but the problem is filling out the remainder of the team. Compared to what other states can offer, NSW wouldn't be very competitive

Picking nits,

But Finlayson is probably the no.2 NSW key forward, behind Hawkins.

He's not on the bench for Blakey, Walker, Himmelberg and Bruce.

He kicked 44 goals last year and finished 8th in the Coleman ahead of all of the above you've named ahead of him.

In reality Blakey doesn't make the side unless he's playing up the ground. I'd probably have Setterfield in there somewhere.

The NSW midfield will be good in a few years, with the likes of Tom Green and some top picks in this years draft coming through.

I think if the NSW/ACT players were a single squad in the AFL that team would be pushing for the top 8.

Your point?

I think if Vic or WA were a single AFL team they would win the flag by about 15 goals....

My thought too. Rarely would a state team be able to draw the absolute best crop of players

Which is why Victoria would be unbeatable in SOO in modern footy, they'd just win through rotations. the bench would always be better

The only exception would be if another SOO side was majority from one team. but what would be the point?

Also the NSW team looked a lot better when the likes of Carey and Crawford were available, but depth was still shot.

Yep, and plenty of other great NEw south wales players as well around that period.
Also remember that both NSW and Tasmania both beat Victoria in 1990.

The moment you wrote down Taylor Walker's name it should've been a moment of realisation that rhe entire debate was over rendering any further effort wasted.

Who wins?

NSW.

Aaron Francis over Tom Jonas is criminal and offensive. With that being said, I think it’d be a close game

To be fair, Jonas (188cm) is a potential sub and could easily be on the bench instead.

I just figured the SA would want a bit more height to deal with the four tall combo of Hawkins (198cm), Bruce (197cm), Blakey (195cm) and Walker (193cm).

I don't think it would make much difference to be honest. South Australia aren't stopping that forward line in 2021.
