Home & Garden Would this piss you off?

He has to get permission from the landlord, but the other tenants don't get a say (as far as I know).

If you tell your landlord, go for it.

He obviously hasn't sought permission from the landlord or else the other tenants would have been informed. As a landlord you can't just force the other tenants to live with whoever you please, whenever you please.

Just want to see if I'm being unreasonable here.

My flatmate, let's call him Chip, has gone overseas for 6 weeks as of yesterday. So last night I was rather confused when I saw Chip's light on and heard music coming from his room. Chip's boyfriend (Dale) comes out of the room and explains that Chip gave him his keys, so he could stay here for the next week, as it's closer to where he'll be working.

Now, I absolutely don't have a problem with Dale, nor do I have an issue with him staying here for a week. But I'm pretty pissed that Chip didn't think to even ask me if it was okay for Dale to stay...I mean, that's pretty goddamn rude.

And I am really uncomfortable with the fact Dale has the keys to our place. Is he going to come and go as he pleases until January, when Chip gets back? That's unacceptable in my book.

So what do you guys reckon? At the moment I'm thinking I'll suck it up for the next week but let Chip know (via facebook) that I'm disappointed he didn't think to ask/tell me Dale was going to be staying. And when I see Dale next I'll tell him to leave the keys here at the end of the week.

Your thoughts? Am I being a control-freak bitch? Would you let your flatmate's significant others come and go as they pleased when your flatmate wasn't there? Should Chip have run it past me first?

I'd be upset over that. I have my own flat which I share with one flatmate. If I were in the same situation, I'd expect to be informed. Sorry if it's been covered before, but is Chip on the lease?

Regardless, he's breaking the rules and being very inconsiderate as a flatmate.

Well as long as Dale is helping you out with the rent and buying food that would help you. but if Dale is doing shit all i'd let Major Chip hazard know that you can't pay for everything alone with another person.

Chip should have asked/told you, definitely.

Are you and the other housemates friends with Dale? Perhaps he thought you wouldn't mind at all if that's the case. But he certainly should have asked you out of merely consideration if not legalities (I don't know what's legal and what not).

Nah we're not friends with him. He stays over a lot but we don't all hang out or anything.

I'm definitely going to ask him for the keys though, or at least not to just lob on in when the week's up. That's not on in my book.

Chip should've run it by you before he left. Just the courteous thing to do.

With any situation like that, a bit of empathy just needs to be applied.

Definintely ask for the keys when the week's up too, unless you Chip and Dale are able to come to some sort of arrangement (e.g. Dale gives you cash for bills, etc).

I'm with you on this one Hools, flatmate just can't hands hands his keys to others without speaking to/getting the OK from the other housemates.

You should tell Dale to GTFO, if he doesn't like then it's off to Gate 3 for a Kananook Bath.

Here is the answer: Hey Chip, I really like Dale, so him staying over while you were gone wasn't a massive problem, but if something like that's going to happen again, I'd appreciate it if you mentioned it to me first.

What are Alvin's 2 cents on this whole crazy scenario?

I'd send ol' Chippola a message on Facebook.

"Hey bud. What's hanging? Listen although you didn't ask me first - which would have been the cool thing to do - I don't mind Dale staying in the flat for a week, because he's a nice guy and I'm a tolerant person.

HOWEVER - what I DO mind is this other guy, Dug, who has been here every second night. I'm finding it all touch invasive. And, predictably, I can't sleep with the noise he and Dale are making ALL night.

So I'm going to be asking for the set of keys back.

Hope you're well, and see you when you get back sweetness."
