Would you go to a Grand final if your side was not involved? I would but I would just not hang around for the cup to be presented.

Of course. I go to the Grand Final every year. It's my favourite day of the year (it's like Christmas day when you were a kid)

No matter who the teams are, I always feel as if I "should" be at the game. If I am sitting at home, I always feel as if I am missing out on something, which is why I endeavour to be there every year.

No way.. there are not enough seats for club members as is... if all the selfish people in the world stayed home maybe all club members could attend...

but that would be in a perfect world...

Sh!t yeah - it's a great day out, especially if you don't live in Melbourne and don't go to the MCG much.

I've been to 2 :

1983 - Biggest mass walkout I've ever seen when ALL the bombers fans left at halftime, what a pack of frontrunners.

1988 - Why did I bother ?

cheers

Absolutely not. The GF belongs to the members of the participating teams. No wonder they can never get seats.

Wonders will never cease. I actually agree with C.I.K. Your comments are spot on.

I've never been to a Grand Final, but I've spoken to people who have, and I get the impression that the atmosphere at the Grand Final is sadly lacking because there are so many neutral people there, many of whom have only a passing interest in football.

The big atmosphere matches these days are the lead-up finals and the big "blockbuster" games like ANZAC Day. I also think the Ansett Cup Final is becoming more of a People's event in recent years, especially since the real Grand Final has become little more than a corporate networking party attracting the same frivolous party-goers that go to Flemington for the Spring Carnival or to Albert Park for the Grand Prix.

No.

I've been to a couple of preliminary finals (Fitzroy 1986, Brisbane Lions 1999) and a couple of night Grand Finals (1978? and 1992) where Fitzroy played. The only Day GF I thought about trying to get tickets for was the 1989 one when Fitzroy played Geelong in the Reserves (and won!!), but in the end I didn't go. I received free Grand Final tickets to the 1996 Grand Final, (part of the wooing of Fitzroy supporters by North Melbourne), but couldn't do it. I gave them to a couple of North supporters that I knew.

However if the Brisbane Lions make a GF appearance in my lifetime, I'd hope to go. It will be all the sweeter, if and when I finally get there. And if we win it................

Look, I agree that all club members should be able to go.

But as an AFL member, I pay 400 bucks a year for the privilige of going. There is room for both AFL, MCC members AND members of the competing clubs. I will always go, no matter what.

The problem is the selling of 15,000 series tickets, with about 1,000 going to each club, and also several hundred Grand Final tickets going to each club. The AFL also have 6,000 that they give to staff, sponsors, etc etc.

If you take out all the series tickets and halve the Grand Final allocation to the 16 clubs, and cut back on the AFL's allocation fr 6,000 back to, say, 3,500......then there is room for members of the competiting clubs. Plenty of room.

And despite what Alf may think, the atmosphere on Grand Final day is, and always has been, sensational.

Well seeing im in Adelaide i wouldnt travel to the mcg unless my team was playing there. I did attend last years SANFL grand final between Centrals and WWT Eagles, and it was bloody boring seeing im a port fan.
The best part of the whole day was the reserves grand final as Port was in it...but we lost by a point after a very spirited comeback. Paul Northeasts last game.

The main grand final was sheer boredom...wasnt a goal scored inthe first quarter. I was basically just barracking for the port power players out on the park (Stewy Dew, Guerra, M Stevens, Steinberner)

I have never been to one so it would be a novelty.
However I wouldn`t want to go to see 2 neutral sides play.

OF COURSE!

It is a privelidge to go to such a high profile Australian event. I would go even if Fremantle were playing the Eagles!!
The atmosphere would be AMAZING. The feeling and the passion would swallow you up ;). And plus the MCG is such a great ground... (well it likes like it is from TV :))

I say the AFL should make AFL members nominate their team when they purchase their season tickets... and then only allow them to attend if their nominated team plays in the GF... then all club members would get a seat... the AFL members can still have their cheap seats... I have no problem with that...

I'm also an AFL member, and will go every year if possible. I do have sympathy with the rank & file supporter, and would give my ticket to a friend who supports a participating team if I could, but the tickets are not tranferrable.
I would definitely support the lessening of AFL members rights IF (and its a big if) club members of the supporting teams are accomodated. In fact this year the AFL members who are also club support package holders of the participating teams get preference, after last years fiasco when not all full AFL members got tickets (due to the giving of 4000 tickets from the AFL members allocation to Colonial Medallion club members).
I think the atmosphere depends on where you are. I have never been in a better place than in the Standing room during the 1st half of the 97 GF. I was in the Northern stand in 98 where it was a bit flatter. Atmosphere also has a lot to do with your emotional involvement, if your team is playing then you will think there is fantastic atmosphere, if it is not, you can be dispassionate about it.

But it is the biggest day on the sporting calendar, forget your Grand Prix, tennis finals, Melbourne Cup. This is THE day, and if you get the opportunity, take it.

I would just love to see the Western Bulldogs in the grand final.
The Build up to Grand Final day would make me so excited and the 97 and 98 years I was pissed off as the bulldogs were ontop of the ladder for the majority of them years. So if im at a grand final the Bulldogs aren't in, it would just make me upset because the bulldogs aren't there in the last saturday in september.

To those who voted 'yes' - would you support a team for the day or sit quiet and observe the game.

I would sit quietly. But secretly I would support one side. I just wouldn't make any noise, or show any emotion when either side got a goal. I just love my footy, and would watch any sides.

Yep!
I've been to one where I was 'neutral' and still had a HUGE day! It was one of my best football experiences and could only have been made better if my team had actually been in it, but personally I just felt lucky to be there - regardless of who was playing.

The only downfall is to guarantee a ticket in & flight over etc, you have to book a package early in the season and pay around $1800-2000 for the 2 day experience!

i proabblky would go but if i thought one team would ust thrash teh other e.g. 2000 dons vs dees i probably wouldn't go because it's be a bit boring, plus they beat us in the prelim so i'd be barracking for the losers!
