Slippery slope.

You apply the same "IF's" to all one flag coaches like Worsfold, Longmire, McRae, Simpson?

At least two of the coaches you've listed have made multiple GF's with one (McRae) a massive chance to make one this year, what's Goodwin done since his one?

Nah I don’t think I’d ever be comfortable.

The gambling, “the good stuff” messages to Dank, all the rumours over the last few years.

Even if not true or he’s moved on from that time, I think if there was anything in it the media would have a license to go a bit harder without the protection of the VFL.

Also a premiership is a premiership and good on him for winning one, but it was the shorter COVID year and in Perth.

It’s a different thing doing it over a full season, where players aren’t locked in and are out living their lives. We’ve had culture issues in the past and it doesn’t seem like things are great at Melbourne.

He won a flag.

This is a guy who went to a shit team that hadn't won a flag since 1964 and hadn't made the finals in 11 seasons.

In 9 seasons delivered four top 4 ladder positions resulting in a PF and a flag before it all fell apart when his main strength (midfield fell apart).

We have a very very good list. We are primed to make a run. We don't need a culture builder. We need someone who can win a flag within 3 years.

That was the year prior. He won it in a 22 game season like 2019 and 2022. 23 game season wasn't introduced until 2023.

A fair enough the , I thought they won it in 2020 for whatever reason.

I do agree at this point we probably need someone to come in and finish the job.

Dees have 4 wins out the past 20 games - over WCE, Essendon, St Kilda and Gold Coast. With the list they have, that is something more than a run of bad form. Like Simpson, he's lost the players. I consider Jason Taylor to be one of the best recruiters in the business, especially at the pointy end. He must be devastated seeing the incredible list he put together fall off a cliff like this.

I love Goody, one of my all time favourite players but he coaches a boring, defensive brand of contest, kick down the line, contest footy that teams have worked out very easily now and he hasn't been able to pivot. The game moves fast these days and he hasn't been able to move with it. Along with the cultural and lifestyle issues that seem to follow him around.

The Office Reaction GIF

reported - both for trying to offload your coach on us, and the hideous image of slobbo with hair! :D
I was thinking of giving him frosted tips at some point.

Talk about ungrateful. The man that ended a 57 year premiership drought. FOR SHAME.
That's true, but then he made me hate football.

This would have happened with Roo still in the picture but I think now with Balme just don't see this happening and although i love goody as a player not as a coach.

If you look at all the premiership teams what do they have in common. Quality Assistant Coaches. I don't think we have that.

VB - Nah
Burns - Nope
Hombsch - Your kidding right
Baulderstone - Only new but is ROB going to improve. nope

Davis - Too early to tell.

even your development Coaches
Wright - nope
Randall - nope
McPherson - Dude not long out of playing what's he going to teach
Godden - Decent not constantly failed in the finals

How confident are you that a guy who hasn't won a final in three (soon to be four) seasons and is currently winless would be a substantially better option than Nicks?

Don't get me wrong, Nicks is an awful coach, but maybe we should aim higher

The thing that concerns me most about Simpson is his weakness when things are against him. Good football mind, not a great leader of a club. Remember his constant whining during covid - when all other sport around the world was stopped, his club was permitted to travel to the Gold Coast (could be worse places) and play. And all he could do was complain.

Once things started to go downhill at WCE, he was lost, had no answers, always looked despondent and pretty much gave up.

Needs everything to be in his favor. Not the right guy for us.

I agree with the first part of this. Through that period there were definitely Matthew Nicks vibes of taking no responsibility and blaming other stuff

However a major contributing factor to West Coast's downfall at the end of his tenure was how he had 20 blokes on the injury list for consecutive seasons. They had to play top ups at one point. Eventually he gave up but he didn't have many levers to pull when you are basically forced to select a certain team.

Goodwin would be miles ahead of Nicks IMO.

This will be Clarkson's 6th straight season missing finals and he is 1-4 and I would want him.

My saying yes to Goodwin is very much related to our current position. If I was West Coast I would not be interested in the slightest - I actually think Nicks would be a good fit for West Coast.

IMO Nicks is currently doing a better job than Goodwin at coaching

My #1 pick would be John Longmire if we were going for a recycled coach and it wouldn't even be close. His record is exceptional of the available options. Premiership winner, has consistently made grand finals, routinely made finals and won them, fantastic overall winning record.

C'mon. Do you downgrade Leigh Mathews as a coach because his last 4 seasons he didnt sniff the finals and had a winning percentage slightly higher than Nicksy.

The wheels have fallen off at Melbourne. Has been there 9 seasons and his time is done.

I wouldn't be against Horse. Agree he would be #1. Goodwin / Simpson should be a close #2 followed by Buckley and then the assistants
