C'mon. Do you downgrade Leigh Mathews as a coach because his last 4 seasons he didnt sniff the finals and had a winning percentage slightly higher than Nicksy.

The wheels have fallen off at Melbourne. Has been there 9 seasons and his time is done.

I wouldn't be against Horse. Agree he would be #1. Goodwin / Simpson should be a close #2 followed by Buckley and then the assistants

Well it's not really the same though is it? Matthews won 4 flags at 2 clubs, extracted a 3 peat, and had one of the modern day exceptional records in finals.

If that was Goodwin, no issue.

Goodwin has coached for 9 years and won a final in just 2 of those years. He failed to capitalise on Melbourne's list - in their window he won a final in just one season.

I think there's significant cause for concern that Goodwin fluked a flag; his record is very underwhelming outside of that if we're talking about a recycled coach to replace Nicks. I don't want a one hit wonder or finals loser. May as well get Ken Hinkley

The answer is no for mine.

Fantastic footballer no question, but he lucked into a COVID Flag. Outside of that he's a worse finals coach than Kenny

And if he failed miserably in his final four years as coach (as did with Hardwick and Clarkson) then I don't know why you hold it against goody.

The point is that the majority of good/great coaches end up getting sacked/leaving on bad terms after multiple bad seasons.

My point is that the guy can coach as proven by his win loss record, flag and making the finals in 4 of his first 7 seasons.

You don't think that Melbourne's list was overrated? Bailey Fritsch was their key forward. You can pinch a flag without a forward line, but all the dynasty's have had 2key forwards. He made the top 4 3 consecutive seasons on his run, before it all fell apart.

Bit unfair here. He has a 50% finals record. Chris Scott has a 46.7% finals record. Fagan is 56.7%. Hinkley is 40%.

That was the year prior. He won it in a 22 game season like 2019 and 2022. 23 game season wasn't introduced until 2023.
The season was still quite compromised. Sydney and GWS were quite heavily affected. And the GF was played in Perth.

My point is that Goodwin doesn't have enough good seasons. A one hit wonder.

If he failed in his final four years after making/winning at least 3 grand finals like Hardwick, Clarkson and many of the other examples you've come up with it's a totally different story.

You don't think that Melbourne's list was overrated? Bailey Fritsch was their key forward. You can pinch a flag without a forward line, but all the dynasty's have had 2key forwards. He made the top 4 3 consecutive seasons on his run, before it all fell apart.

I don't. Their premiership side included Ben Brown and Tom McDonald. Not the best key forwards of all time but serviceable guys to complement Fritsch. In 2021 they generated the most shots on goal in the competition - they did not have some crappy useless forward line.

Alongside that they had arguably the best midfield and best defense in the competition and had stars entering their prime.

That team should have won more than 0 finals from 2022 onward

Bit unfair here. He has a 50% finals record. Chris Scott has a 46.7% finals record. Fagan is 56.7%. Hinkley is 40%.

Chris Scott has won a final in 9 of his 14 completed seasons. Fagan in 4 of 8. Hinkley in 5 of 12. And good old Goodwin sitting on just 2 of 9.

You obviously rate premierships highly and I think that's fair - I wouldn't hire an ex-coach without premiership success.

I'm just extremely wary of a guy whose success is almost entirely consolidated in a small number of seasons. I think his record is the worst of any premiership coach in the AFL era.

Considering that luck plays a role in premierships, you need a coach that can position a team for multiple cracks over several years. Goodwin isn't that coach.

Ben Rutten would be a far better get.
Deserves another chance, only dumped by Essendon as they thought they had Clarko.

Simpson the dream though.

Goodwin, no way.

I voted no initially but afc979810 is right, when you think about it he is a significant upgrade on nicks, has had success and I think important to have a south Australian as we are the defacto state team after all. My concerns were how much Paul roos had to do with setting up Melbourne, did goodwin really capitalise on all the opportunities and anything related to Neil craig gets me nervous.

No to Goodwin. I reckon Paul Roos handed him a premiership team and system. A bit left field but I wouldn't be against Nathan Bassett as a 1st time coach with Davis and Balme by his side. Game style might be interesting... but he knows how to coach a team to win.

Loved him as a player. But have heard too many things about him being a dodgy human.
Would bring that to our club which is a massive no. Nicks isn’t a great or proven coach, but at least at the moment the places seems like all of our players want to be there. Which is refreshing after being the club who lost the most required players over a long period.
