All in all - some good signs for this time of the year.....:thumbsu:

How this translates into real season form remains to be seen - but I'd rather be winning at this time of the season than not. Who knows what Collingwood's preparation was like.....there are many making excuses - but for elite athletes who have been training for nearly 6 months solid - I don't really buy into the "tired" thing.

Great signs from Sellar and Tippett up forward. I don't really care whether you're a superstar or not - teams always look more dangerous with talls lurking in the forward line. Straight away it takes the oppositions 2 tallest defenders and on some occasions a resting ruckman which limits the opposition's attacking flexibility.

Jacky looks like a terrier - but got lost a bit - that's to be expected.

Reilly, Porps, vB, Knights all look to have wound it up a notch.

Backline was good - Rutten, Stevens, Johncock, Bock were dependable. Add Bassett and I don't think we have too many worries back there.

Vince was the surprise for me.......looks like he's been eating and benching all summer.....hopefully he plays in the midfield.

Kenny was quiet and looks to be slighly behind in his intensity. He will struggle this year IMO

Campbell - yes it was a trial and yes he might get better.....but there were younger and less credentialled players out there who looked more at home.

Moran looked good in ruck - people forget its been some years since we've had 2 ruckmen at the same time that can kick and catch. I don't think it will be the debacle we're expecting.

Plenty of encouraging signs - and some healthy competition for spots

Symes - Looks at home with Adelaide. Some of his disposal was a little questionable but he got plenty of the ball and did some good things.

Vince - Had a good game. Looks stronger and fitter this year. Was dissapointed he decided to pass off in the 3rd quarter when he was clear for a shot at goal. Definitely worthy of a round 1 call up.

J
Douglas - Quiet first half, but made up for it in the second half. His super goal from the centre square was definitely one for the highlight reel.

Midfield - I'm very very confident that we will have one of the more competitive midfields in the competition this year in Thompson, VB, Knights, Rielly and Porplyzia. Porplyzia has always has a lot of class as a player, and now it appears he has the motor to go along with it. Will be buying him in dream team this year without a shadow of a doubt, I think he'll be our most improved player this year.

So are you guys actually any closer to knowing who will be your starting midfield this season?

Thompson, Knights and Reilly would be your main 3 one would think, with VanBerlo, Porplyzia, Symes, Vince and Douglas all rotating through there and the odd pinch hit from Goodwin and Edwards.

Just on Vince, does anyone think hes a 22 gamer this season? Looked great yesterday.

No I don't think so

I think we have to allow for it being a pre-season game in the middle of nowhere with one side underdone and well below par.

However, what last night's game has showed us is that we have some exciting young talent coming through. They might not perform at that high level this year but they will in a year or 2. If Sellar can stay healthy and keep on improving, we have found our forward for the next decade. He was very athletic, chased and harrassed defensively and presented well offensively. His performance was even more pleasing considering he did all this one a fine defender in Wakelin. A little bit concerning that he got a bit of a cramp after he kicked his 3rd but I am sure that his aerobic capacity will keep improving over the next few years.

Gill made a good point on 5AA before the game regarding Sellar. If we have a 5km run, Sellar would be labouring towards the end of the pack but what he has is an amazing ability to push through the pain and have that gut football running. That characteristing is worth its weight in gold.

Vince and Porplyzia have shown what class acts they are in the midfield but are not quite there yet in terms of aerobic capacity. Not far away but a smigeon off where they must be to be full time midfielders. If we can get these 2 boys to that level of fitness we have found a couple of ripping midfielders. And how good was that play where Porps kicked hsi first goal, crumbing off the pack, breaking through the pack and kicking a goal. As classy as it gets!

MacKay looks like malnourished little kid but he has a lot of cleanless and class. Attacks the ball well and uses it brilliantly. He will no doubt get some games this year but I think in a year or 2 when he puts on more muscle, he will be one heck of a player.

Jacky struggled no doubt but I thought he improved as the game went on. The pace was a bit too much for him to handle but he does have a knack for being in the right place at the right time. He knows where to run. He has that natural instict that is hard to teach. He will be a player but might need a little bit of time. I would play him in all of the PS games to get him up to speed as quick as possible.

Tippett is a great prospect. I LOVE his 2nd and 3rd efforts. Dropped a couple that he should have taken but the one he took was a Jonathan Brownesque pack splitting mark! Plenty there to work with and I think he coule do with another couple or so KGs in the upper body!

Moran was a bit underwhelming in the first half. I was livid with him for not shepparding in that pessage of play that led to Goody's supergoal but to his credit he got a LOT more comfortable as the game went on to the point where he was great in the 2nd half. He is the new prototype for a modrn day ruckman. A great leap, big engine and pace to burn. He takes a nice mark and picks up possesions. He could prove to be a steal for us. Plenty there to work with!

Ivan the terrible was very good in the ruck! Pushed forward to sneak a goal. I think he is our #1 ruckman. VERY good in the center square and more than held his own in the ruck contests around the ground. Having said that, it was against Collingwood who have average ruck stocks, I would like to see how our ruckman go against tougher and more polished opponents!

Overall, the most pleasing thing is seeing those youngsters perform well. As is the case with all youngsters, expect inconsistencies. They will show glipmses but will also have stinkers but what they showed tonight is that we have some really promising talent on our list. Its just a matter of us developing that talent and the kids staying injury free and have the right attitude towards training!

Exciting times ahead!

I'm starting to think that if he can hold his own physically against the men.....then why not play him in the real stuff. If he was told that there was little or no expectation from the club on his goal return - I think loitering around our forward line would do far more for his development than playing for a season at the Bay.

Yes - his body will probably pack it in at about Round 10 - but I think he would head back to Glenelg for a rest with a fair idea of what's required at the level.

After training with the best all summer and obviously lifting his work rate - I'd hate to see that momentum lost.

He is a 10 year proposition - no question

1. If Bock can play 22 games at CHB without interruption from injury, he will be All Australian.

2. McLeod should only be used in very quick bursts in a forward pocket/flank. I love him more than life itself, but he still struggles in a one-on-one marking contest.

3. Footy is back.

Apart from that, I enjoyed the match and was impressed with the youngsters. Don't look too much into anything else though.

Sellar has gotta play round one also....has anyone ever seen Porplyzia fumble a footy???

I was a little dissapointed with douglas but impressed with Vince. I was one of the people who were skeptical of Vince's ability to make it at AFL level but not after last nights game. I cant wait to see Tippett play a full game at full forward.

Don't know about the Pies being "tired", but I do know that if they had a tummy bug in the camp that can make you feel & look lethargic.

Nick Maxwell (no. 5) for the Pies is a real "kamikaze".

Of the new/newish Crows I thought Porplyzia, Mackay, Tippett, Knights, Symes, Douglas & Sellar were all very good.

Of the others Bock is a born CHB

Johncock needs some more conditioning work, but he did his job well.

Moran is behind Maric, Griffin & Tippett in the pecking order

Campbell & McGregor probably wont see much AFL time

I was never worried about Vince's skill level but I always thought he looked a bit slow. To me it did look as if he'd picked up a yard or too of pace which would be enough.

Sellar puts in another game like that he'll be in for round one for sure, probably already is. As people said, doesnt have the fitness of the others but he pushes through and keeps running through the pain. Loved his defensive pressure, along with Tippetts.

As I just mentioned, love Tippett's defensive pressure and also his movement to the ball. Does look to have a big presence up forward which we've lacked. I still cant believe he's only play 50 games of footy.

And no, Porplyzia NEVER fumbles a footy :D

Does any one have any idea when the crows will play their next nab cup game? im hopin for a sunday game

given it's not for another 2 weeks - I dare say they will wait for the rest of Round 1 to pan out first....but logic would suggest it would be earlier in the weekend rather than later.....maybe even a Friday night

I thought Douglas, Vince and Symes were all good.

Symes was great in fact.

I think some people are being hard on these three in different posts in this thread.

With Clipsal on that weekend you would hope the bone heads in AFL house would have the sense to play it on Friday or Saturday night.

well we're both wrong....

I just looked at AFL.com and West Coast and Fremantle are playing next Sunday.....with our game v the winner to be played on Sunday 24th

Correctamundo - it better be a late twilight game too - that's Clipsal weekend.....

As has been mentioned it is always great to win 1st up - watching your team win at any level is always better than watching them lose! You are able to be more relaxed amd more positive when noting the game style and player performances.

It was good to see that the club is not getting ahead of itself and was aware of the Collingwood scenario which will keep the performance and result in perspective - and of course we must be aware of the Carlton pre-season v normal season form in recent times as well.

I was a bit worried very early on with some of the decision making and excecution in the back half - one in particular after a kick off - but that was soon erased when it as obvious we were switched on, very sharp with great reflex stuff and with the clean and precise way we were able to move the ball which gave our forwards plenty of opportunities.

I agree that if we can keep Goodwin and Macca up forward it will be a real bonus and could enable us to keep Sellar and Tippett up there in the big stuff. A lot will depend on the level that Reilly, Van Berlo and Thommo can perform at during the season. If Vince and Porps can contribute like that as well it will make it a lot easier - they were fabulous - and both are handy up forward as well. I am wondering what sort of role Tyson Edwards will have though.

I also think we need to slot the experience of Kenny Mac up forward as well even though he wasn't really into it in this game. And I think that Scott Stevens could be in for a better season than he had in '07.

I was impressed with Maric and thought that Moran did ok. I can see him also being a part of the defence at times.

I think Jacky will be very good in time and Symes will be very handy as a run-with type player. I wasnt too disappointed with Campbell - a bit dodgy early on but as the game went he did some good things.

Apart fromm Griffin who else not in this game will push for a spot come round 1?
