Personally I think they'll stay in the Thirds competition. Both teams are playing some good footy and recording wins along the way. They are both looking at playing finals footy which will be exciting for the players and their loyal supporters.will these two make it back into senior football by next year?
Going to go out on a limb and say one certain team just wanted to fight as per usual. No doubt they'll come up with some bullshit excuse once again "Oh but the other team started it".Friday night Thirds Comp: Hoppers Crossing V North Sunshine - game was abandoned - looks like in the last quarter.
Anyone know what happened?
Channel 7 and 9's 6:00pm news tonight both ran stories about a nasty fight breaking out and a player hurling abuse to an umpire who then decided to call the game off.Going to go out on a limb and say one certain team just wanted to fight as per usual. Please can someone tell me how leagues allow and put up with this type of behaviour??At Hoppers today hearing about last night events .. no place in the competition for that behaviour, what a disgrace… be interesting whether the league show some courage and pull the pin on North Sunshine … btw it was far more than “hurling abuse”. Death threats and police escorts for umps
Historically the FDFL / WRFL didn't have much choice. They were notorious for high levels of thuggery, with excesses like this above only slightly worse than the norm for the comp. Attempting to clean up the FDFL in the 90s / 00s would have left a league with no clubs. As a result, the only clubs that got expelled were those that went truly off the scale (assaulting umpires and refusing to co-operate with an investigation, a near riot involving players and spectators, attempting to burn down league HQ, etc.).Please can someone tell me how leagues allow and put up with this type of behaviour??
North Sunshine pretty much expelled themselves given their on field results the last few yearsHistorically the FDFL / WRFL didn't have much choice. Fortunately, the WFNL has become a lot cleaner, in both absolute and relative senses: absolute, in that football everywhere is cleaner than it was in the past, and relative, in that it is no longer far worse than the other leagues (it is still a bit behind, but nowhere near as far as it was, and is catching up).
In the meantime, things like this look even worse than they are. But as thuggish behaviour on and off field is minimised to one or two clubs, they will stick out further and further, until they are such an embarrassment that the WFNL expels them.
I was a senior field umpire in the FDL in the late 80s to mid 90s. People used to scoff and say "good luck" when I told them and yes, it was tough and unruly, to survive as a field umpire you had to expect the unexpected and stand up to footballers you didn't respect because of the way they played. I had reports every second week, some of them violent.Historically the FDFL / WRFL didn't have much choice. Really well articulated. Thank you sharing this.I was a senior field umpire in the FDL in the late 80s to mid 90s. These days I am purely a spectator, I have travelled the grounds in both divisions for the last 5 years or so. I enjoy WFNL footy, the clubs, the grounds and have to say the footy these days is nothing like it was back in my umpiring days. I can say in the last 2 years I have not seen a report or even send off, I have not seen a brawl. The footy is clean, does not remotely look like it was, congratulations to the WFNL and its clubs for how they present footy these days.
Unfortunately the saying is true - you don't get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression and the WFNL, sadly, will never shake its reputation formed in the 1960s to 1990s.
To those player/s who misbehaved in that 3rds game on Friday night, give it up, it's a social grade, you're not cut out to play footy in the 2020s.
Parker..Who’s the bloke at Albanvale ex heights player couldn’t handle the country level footy?!?
As a casual observer of Laverton (former player but no longer involved) I think they'd see this year as a bit of a disappointment. They've got a very good first 18 players and should have done better IMO anyway.R17:
Suns have knocked Sunshine Hts out of the finals race.
Otherwise, some horribly one-sided results.
Watched Albanvale vs. Laverton. Laverton did well early before Albanvale cut the supply to Grigg (No.6). Albanvale had more forward targets and better ball movement. Looked like they were going to run away with it but Laverton fought hard in the last, finding more ways to score and getting to within about 10pts (hard to tell - scoreboard was out of whack much of the time). Was impressed with the work rate of Lavo in the last, when most 3-13 sides would have packed it in. Surprised that Laverton has not won more games this year.
R18:
Suns to play Braybrook, before probably playing them again in the Elimination Final the next week. Interesting predictor - maybe.
Albanvale a chance to pinch 5th if they can beat Wyndhamvale and if Braybrook lose, but can't see it happening. WV need the win to secure top spot and get a week's rest, so don't think they will be taking it easy or resting anyone.
Either Lavo or Rockbank to finish a long year with a win.
Have watched a fair bit of Lavo this year and they've consistently played well in first halves and faded. Were within 10 of Albanvale at Ht 1st time, led at Braybrook at 3QT and think I'm right that they led NF at Hansen at HT. in all games they were over run and lost easily. They look fitter as a group than previous years but fitness still looks an issue.R17:
