Last quarter video from the North Sunshine and Wyndhamvale game played at Dempster Park North Sunshine on Friday night 18th July 2025. Big win for the Roadrunners.

Glen Orden v North Sunshine today:

Fantastic effort by Glen Orden to dominate the game from start to finish to run out 33 point winners. Glen Orden came to play and their determination, running game, around the ground marking and goal kicking was too much for the Roadrunners this afternoon. The Roadrunners never gave up and outscored the hawks 4 goals to 1 in the third quarter. But the hawks hung tight and thanks to some undisciplined play by the Roadrunners in the last, the hawks ran out winners. Congrats to both teams on a good display of aussie rules footy today. I took my camcorder with me and will upload my video on YouTube in a couple of days. Will share on this forum.

will these two make it back into senior football by next year?
Personally I think they'll stay in the Thirds competition. Both teams are playing some good footy and recording wins along the way. They are both looking at playing finals footy which will be exciting for the players and their loyal supporters.

Some slo-mo action from the first half of the Glen Orden V North Sunshine game played last Sunday at Glen Orden Reserve.

Friday night Thirds Comp: Hoppers Crossing V North Sunshine - game was abandoned - looks like in the last quarter.
Anyone know what happened?

Going to go out on a limb and say one certain team just wanted to fight as per usual. No doubt they'll come up with some bullshit excuse once again "Oh but the other team started it".

Channel 7 and 9's 6:00pm news tonight both ran stories about a nasty fight breaking out and a player hurling abuse to an umpire who then decided to call the game off.

At Hoppers today hearing about last night events .. no place in the competition for that behaviour, what a disgrace… be interesting whether the league show some courage and pull the pin on North Sunshine … btw it was far more than “hurling abuse”. Death threats and police escorts for umps

Please can someone tell me how leagues allow and put up with this type of behaviour??

Historically the FDFL / WRFL didn't have much choice. They were notorious for high levels of thuggery, with excesses like this above only slightly worse than the norm for the comp. Attempting to clean up the FDFL in the 90s / 00s would have left a league with no clubs. As a result, the only clubs that got expelled were those that went truly off the scale (assaulting umpires and refusing to co-operate with an investigation, a near riot involving players and spectators, attempting to burn down league HQ, etc.).

Fortunately, the WFNL has become a lot cleaner, in both absolute and relative senses: absolute, in that football everywhere is cleaner than it was in the past, and relative, in that it is no longer far worse than the other leagues (it is still a bit behind, but nowhere near as far as it was, and is catching up).

In the meantime, things like this look even worse than they are. But as thuggish behaviour on and off field is minimised to one or two clubs, they will stick out further and further, until they are such an embarrassment that the WFNL expels them.

North Sunshine pretty much expelled themselves given their on field results the last few years
And just entered a Thirds this year.

Seriously, if you’re getting this fired up about playing Thirds, then maybe football is not for you.

On a brighter note, went out to Ainsworth Reserve yesterday and caught Sunshine Heights vs. Braybrook. A hard fought game played in good spirit, with a large bearing on finals.

Braybrook had the better of the first half and looked to be cruising to a fairly easy win by half time. The second half was the way suburban footy should be: good intensity and spirit, clean, and no letting up. Crowd was good in numbers and well behaved.

Braybrook look the better side and deserved to win. They have better footy reflexes, with players capable of receiving cleanly, wheeling with it, spotting a good option down the field and getting it to him cleanly (sounds like the absolute basics of footy, but surprisingly rare in Div 2 WFNL). Braybrook let SH back into it in the 3rd qtr by doing dumb things like kicking to outnumbered men in the centre, soft turnovers, etc.

SH were less skilful than Braybrook, with most blokes having to stop, look and think before going on, making them a bit slower. They had good spirit and intensity, and played the first 10min of the last qtr like it was a final, keeping Braybrook on the back foot. Even when Braybrook took the lead, SH did not drop their heads, reclaiming the lead twice.

Good to see some buy in from the multi cultural community of the west. No.6 for SH, who appears to be of islander extraction, got some good runs going, though probably held on to it for too long on occasion. Also noted some African players who did well.

Only down side I could see is that either side was in finals contention (Braybrook now out of the four by <1%). I watched Parkside vs. Sunshine a few weeks ago and Sunshine (3rd last in Div 1) would have taken either of these sides apart.

I was a senior field umpire in the FDL in the late 80s to mid 90s. People used to scoff and say "good luck" when I told them and yes, it was tough and unruly, to survive as a field umpire you had to expect the unexpected and stand up to footballers you didn't respect because of the way they played. I had reports every second week, some of them violent.

These days I am purely a spectator, I have travelled the grounds in both divisions for the last 5 years or so. I enjoy WFNL footy, the clubs, the grounds and have to say the footy these days is nothing like it was back in my umpiring days. I can say in the last 2 years I have not seen a report or even send off, I have not seen a brawl. The footy is clean, does not remotely look like it was, congratulations to the WFNL and its clubs for how they present footy these days.

Unfortunately the saying is true - you don't get a 2nd chance to make a 1st impression and the WFNL, sadly, will never shake its reputation formed in the 1960s to 1990s.

To those player/s who misbehaved in that 3rds game on Friday night, give it up, it's a social grade, you're not cut out to play footy in the 2020s.

Really well articulated. Thank you sharing this.

Agree with everyone’s sentiments, thirds footy is a bit of a laugh. No one takes it too seriously, it’s designed to just keep those guys who can’t commit (or maybe are too old or just learning) in the game. If you can’t just play footy at this level, time to give it up.

With North Sunshine rebuilding and only really needing one side at the moment, they should make a statement and just boot the trouble makers. Rebuild the right way by focussing on the right people and fostering a family culture.

Unfortunately though, the club won’t learn. Not enough volunteers at that club that have the smarts or the fortitude to stick it out.

R17:
Suns have knocked Sunshine Hts out of the finals race.

Otherwise, some horribly one-sided results.

Watched Albanvale vs. Laverton. Laverton did well early before Albanvale cut the supply to Grigg (No.6). Albanvale had more forward targets and better ball movement. Looked like they were going to run away with it but Laverton fought hard in the last, finding more ways to score and getting to within about 10pts (hard to tell - scoreboard was out of whack much of the time). Was impressed with the work rate of Lavo in the last, when most 3-13 sides would have packed it in. Surprised that Laverton has not won more games this year.

R18:
Suns to play Braybrook, before probably playing them again in the Elimination Final the next week. Interesting predictor - maybe.

Albanvale a chance to pinch 5th if they can beat Wyndhamvale and if Braybrook lose, but can't see it happening. WV need the win to secure top spot and get a week's rest, so don't think they will be taking it easy or resting anyone.

Either Lavo or Rockbank to finish a long year with a win.

As a casual observer of Laverton (former player but no longer involved) I think they'd see this year as a bit of a disappointment. They've got a very good first 18 players and should have done better IMO anyway.

Have watched a fair bit of Lavo this year and they've consistently played well in first halves and faded. Were within 10 of Albanvale at Ht 1st time, led at Braybrook at 3QT and think I'm right that they led NF at Hansen at HT. in all games they were over run and lost easily. They look fitter as a group than previous years but fitness still looks an issue.

Their new combined U18s will play finals in their 1st year so hopefully younger legs will start to filter through. Hopefully can have their own U18s next year. Things looking brighter at Merton Street.

WFNL Div 2 Seniors - Laverton V Western Rams
Watched the last 1.5 quarters of that game, close until 3qt, Lavo 8 goals to 3 last quarter.

Noticed the new rooms were opened, decking and partly enclosed verandah on the old rooms and old rooms renovated. Quite smart looking, but what was the temporary fencing right around the outer side preventing you watching from the boundary fence, was that for the 3rds finals the night before, but why?

Lavo finish the season with a % of 70, hasn't been that high for a while, and that was without the usual 2 big wins against North Sunshine.
