Well actually I didn't... There was a reason I didn't mention that game. By the way St. Albans were in the contest until the last quarter. But just to name our 6 outs that game: Damien Fitzpatrick, Aaron henneman, Joel west, Tegan Henderson, Peter delink, jarred tuppen.... That's our whole backbone. You take that out of any team in one match and any team will struggle. If you don't know who they are ask because they will tell you they are quality players. But talk is cheap and we are in finals. Up to all teams involved to see how far they can go. Good luck to the final 5

Prediction i love your passion on here, you obviously are a true blue supporter and you promote your club well on this forum.

I agree with you that despite win/loss ratios any team in the top 5 is capable of beating each other on it's day, hopefully this leads to some great games and big crowds over the next month. Personally i rate your club (St Albans) pretty highly and think that they are well balanced on all lines and if they put 4 quarters together are a very tough opponent.
You say you haven't had your best side on the park all year, but who does? Every club has injuries and players who travel o/s or go to the snow etc, and all clubs will go through stages where their depth is tested. That is why making the finals is so rewarding, we overcome obstacles along the journey and at times fight adversity to get there, so well done to all competing teams who qualified in 2013.

This is only my opinion but i think the top 5 teams finished where they belong.

Deer Park: Despite 2 heavy losses have been the best team over 18 rounds, only dropping the 2 games and deserve the week off. They obviously have the talent and although people have been talking/speculating about how much they have spent, not many clubs pay players for finals so they are the ones to beat.

Spotswood: Ever consistent, well drilled and very structured football team. Love them or hate them their record is super impressive over the last 6 yrs and no-one would have had them outside top 3.

Sunshine: Whether pundits think they are the real deal or not they have won 8 of their last 9 games with only loss in back half of the season against Spotty @ Spotty. Beat Altona in the game that decided 3rd in round 18 so deserve their double chance.

Altona: Extremely talented team and reigning premier. No one will underestimate them. Well documented about some players travelling o/s during the course of the season and perhaps this did unsettle them slightly as they dropped a few games most people had penciled in as a W. Their best is good enough but slight inconsistency over past 4 weeks means they defend their title from 4th.

St Albans: Beat Altona twice and that is what was separated them from the clubs outside the 5 and secured them finals football. Playing feature games at night early in the yr backfired and put them on the back foot re:top 3. Recruited strongly in off-season and had high expectations. As stated definitely capable and have the talls at both ends to match it against the other finalists.

This was my first post in quite some time and I hope it perhaps can generate some genuine discussion about WRFL football.

Another opinion of mine is that this site is so quiet now because too many use it to take a swipe at clubs and or individual players etc. If you enjoy a bit a friendly banter or some football gossip let's use this forum properly and have some legitimate discussions, share opinions, have tipping comps, reviews of matches we can't attend etc etc.....If that could happen I for 1 would happy to post more often and share my thoughts.

Good luck to all clubs & players in all divisions.

BJ

For the record, using my friend Google Maps, from Soldiers Reserve: UHS - 28 min; St Marys - 35 min; Collegians - 35 min; Richmond Centrals - 37 min & Kew - 38 min. The other 3 teams have Juniors in WRFL.
On the other matter about leaving at 6/6;30 for the 9:20 games, they only play 4 9:20 games for the year and one of those is at home.
In WRFL U18s Div 1; Port Melb - 25 min; St Albans - 26 min; Sunshine - 27 min. Div 2 CS - 28 Min; Parkside - 25 min; West Foots - 24 min. Not a real lot of difference I can see
So I don't think you can use the 18s as the reason

the only number you need for your answer as to why they would join the WRFL was Total Player Payments = $0.00.

hard to keep talented kids with clubs just down the road throwing out apprentice wages for 2 hours work on a saturday.

Apprentice wages don't cut it anymore Bizz, you would know this.

My tip every year I'm not running around come finals time is Spotty, love the way they go about their footy and believe they are the most structured well coached team in the league. All of their players buy into Occas philosophy and you know what you will get from them every week, and over a long period of time that will hold up and have them competing on the last day.

agree with you SD, the best predictor of future behaviour is past behaviours - and Spotty are the yardstick.

Apprentices take home near $500 a week these days - thats near $200k a year in player payments....

Finals Time;)

Well Done to all sides in Divvy 1 seniors and reserves for making the finals, with the general consesus being the standard of the competition at the top end of the ladder certainly improved (I fully agree). In the seniors anyone can win it on their day in my opinion and hopefully injuries dont ruin a teams chances.

In the reserves a fantastic end of the season with 2nd to 6th not final until post Round 18. Spotty miss unluckily by 10%, but interesting that last year with the same results they would have finished in Top 5 by a game and a fair bit of %.

Good Luck to all:thumbsu:

anyone go to the game y'day? was it a case of Spotty finding another gear or Sunshine just not turning up? either way we can put down our glasses, she'll be Deer Park v Spotty in the big dance

was down there having a look

seems like spotty just went to another level with the start of the finals. razor sharp after a slow start, once cloke got on the board it was basically over. we could go through the list but it looks like there's not one player in that team that doesnt totally believe they can beat their opponent in any contest.

sunshine were okay in the last quarter but it was a totally demoralising effort. millar tried hard and obviously patty wiggins ended up with 4. caught a glimpse of him having some back and forth with the spotty crowd i believe.

anyone got any updates on the altona / st albans game? sunshine awaits. although to see whether or not the roos bounce back from yesterday will be interesting

Altona too strong today. Altona 24/9 to StAlbans 12/11.

St. Albans haven't had a full team all year until yesterday. It's probably a great thing they played north footscray ;) we will enjoy being your underdog that couldn't possibly win it... I've seen it happen before. Like they say you've got to be in it to win it! I also remember early on in the year someone saying we wouldn't push the top 5 teams either... We beat Altona twice, lost to sunshine by 5 points, spotswood 3 goals and dp by 3 goals first time round. This finals series is wide open and you're in denial if you think it isn't.

Denial ? If Sunshine are that far off the mark against Spotty and St Albans are slaughtered against Altona how is that a wide open Finals Series ? Sunshine are not without a chance against Altona next week and only need to find some of their H&A Form and they could see themselves in a prelim but
St Albans were always going to be cannon fodder. With Hoppers and Colts falling away badly 5th spot was a consolation prize for whoever fell into it.

Deer Park Certainties
After watching the Deer Park v Hoppers reserves on Sunday if anyone thinks that Deer Park are certain to take the biscuits, think again, although they won, look at who was in that side. Ayres, Towner, Georgiadies, Kelly, Butiegieg Clarke, Laverde, Daly, and a couple more who were recruited to play in this so called super team. They were matched for all most 4q, just the last 5min they pulled away, average age I reckon looking at both teams would be Hoppers 22(if that), 80% played in 18's flags last couple of years to my knowledge, Deer Park (27/28). Spotswood will wipe them in my opinion!

Div 1 Senior Finals tips
Deer Park V Spotswood (deer park by 30)
Sunshine V Altona (Altona by 60)

i reckon quite clear wins for both teams this week
but reckon Spotswood could knock off Deer Park tho after there Training drill against Sunshine last week

and DeSouse Trwein Daley also why would they play in two game cause they played the week early and is this allowed if you havent even played more games in the two than ones cause some of these havent as deer park didnt even play last week.
Any way they have extra run in the legs now and will be good to go come this week so they beat woodsman by 19

Although St. Albans had a touch up, how is the finals series not wide open? Everyone wiped Altona off saying they are out of form. I think you are undermining how well Altona played on the big ground. Altona could definitely win it coming from fourth if they continue that form towards the big one. Who do you follow Cinderella man? Because we will probably find your biased opinion with one of the top two. If Altona and spotswood continue the form I saw on the weekend it will be a repeat grand final. Good luck to the last 4

The side i follow ? The side i follow has not even made the finals Charlie so no bias here. St Albans were given a touch up as you put it because they were out of their depth in Finals football pure and simple. The best 4 teams are left and all have shown during the year they are capable of winning it. Like i said 5th spot was a consolation and was never going past an elimination final. Could have been Hoppers in the same boat but the Top 4 were effectively that a Top 4.

An enormous effort from the Hoppers Reserves on the weekend, myself and Rob were very proud of their performance considering we had 15 individuals 19 years old and one 17 year old. I believe Deer Park thought the game would be allover by Halftime and they could of rested the "superstars", we were in it all the way and beleived that we could have gone along way if we had won this game. Every player gave everything they had. We also lost our CHF overnight due to illness and that's just bad luck I guess.

On the other hand, I know you cant make excuse's but the umpiring in the last 1/4 was disgraceful to say the least when is the league going to learn that boy's cant umpire men's games and old men cant keep up, guessing decisions from 40m away, inconsistent, easily influenced by players on the ground, dead set rubbish !

I hope that all the boy's stick fat as they did during their successful u18 years and juniors together success is not that far away, as we move into a new era with a new senior coach ( ? ).

Yeah coming from a DPFC supporter i can agree with you, i thought the game was gonna be over by half time, and Yeah it was a really good effort from yous
But the umpiring was shocking in the last quarter, gave a 50m penalty our way which was a game breaking absolute shithouse display.

Like i said 5th spot was a consolation and was never going past an elimination final. Could have been Hoppers in the same boat but the Top 4 were effectively that a Top 4.

I genuinely believe top 4's are the way to go with finals footy. Problems with top 5's are it rewards mediocrity for the side who finishes 5th, lessens the reward of finishing 4th (b/c really there is no difference from between finishing 4th or 5th), and has been known to do more harm than good to sides finishing 1st due playing a lack of footy going into a GF if they win their first final, meaning they go into the bigger game of the year having one hit out in 27 days, and lost momentum. Plus as much as we love finals footy it just drags it out longer.

A top 4 format gives all sides a true reward, 1 week off for top 2 if they win, 2nd chance if they lose, elimination for 3 and 4. Plus its over in 3 weeks and we know who the premiers are. No brainer if you ask me. Plus dont tell me the league do it to make extra money coz they dont even sell bloody frothies at the games.

Especially when you consider it is a 10 team division. Half the division make the finals. In its current format of 10 teams it would be Top 4 Bottom Six for me.
