Wow Krejcikova, what a performance. The serve, the return, the BH, the depth, just a flawless performance. That tennis is absolute top echelon, hopefully she can produce that more regularly because it’s beautiful to watch.
I do have concerns for Swiatek. She’s just so intense, and while the overwhelming majority of the time it works for her, it occasionally works against her. Today was an example. She was rattled by the umpires decision to give her a time violation, and things like that can throw her focus off a little. I fear a Hingis 1999 French Open style meltdown could one day happen. I hope not, but that intensity can boil over and work against you.
Andreeva won 7-6 in the third in Austin qualifying. Phew! Faces another 18 y/o next for a place in another 250 event.

Peak Kreijkova is unplayable, problem with her has been it happening consistently. This result moves her to #3 in the race and #16 in live rankings so it gives her some protection early in the French. Iga didn't do much wrong was just completely outplayed

Giorgi takes the title in Merida in a very hard fought final. She was down 2-0 and faced BP to go 3-0 down in the final set, before finding her best tennis and eventually taking it 6-2. So that wraps up another week on the WTA tour, champions being Krejcikova and Giorgi.
Two more tournaments this week, both 250’s with pretty weak fields.
Austin:
Inaugural tournament in Austin, but unfortunately not the best field which also recently lost Raducanu to illness. Kalinskaya is one to watch for me; I think her form this year has actually been good, she’s just had super tough draws and keeps losing narrowly. Lauren Davis although seeded is very beatable first up. Potapova had to withdraw in Dubai with illness so her last tournament was her win in Linz. I think she faces Kostyuk in the final.
Monterrey:
Garcia headlines the second straight week of tennis in Mexico at a truly beautiful setting, one of the nicest on tour. Giorgi will make the trip down the road to see if she can win consecutive titles. Vekic could be one to watch, but has Tsurenko first up who seems to have the worst luck imaginable with draws. Osorio is back again, after blowing a massive title opportunity last week. And young talents Rakhimova and Diana Shnaider will look to make their mark.

Was hoping to get through a large chunk of matches today.…got through 2. Osorio retired down 7-6, 4-2. Looked like left groin, was really struggling to move before she pulled the pin. She’s such a fighter so you know it can’t be great. Sherif would have to be one of my most disliked players on tour, the noise, the reactions, unreal. Osorio is loud and reacts a lot too but Sherif is on another level. Disgusting.
And then my girl Andreeva. She received a LL and played Dart and wow, what a marathon. 3:32 I think it was, 7-6, 3-6, 7-6. Saved 2 MP’s at 5-3. She really impressed me. The fight is a major strength, she just needs time to develop. Impressive groundstrokes and defending, can see why clay is her preferred surface. Great stamina to play a near flawless TB after such a long battle. Longest WTA match of the year. Insane.

So after saving MP’s in the first round, Andreeva blows a 5-2 third set lead and had a MP in the TB (after saving 3 beforehand). What a rollercoaster. Has to be one of the most eventful LL entrants lol. Such a wasted chance to make a QF though, and who knows when she’ll get another chance.

Kostyuk into what is, somehow, her first WTA final. Plays winner of Gracheva/Volynets. Although a weak field and nothing significant in the overall picture, a title win would be big for Marta and prove that 2023 is a major step forward in her development.
In Monterrey it’s Vekic vs Zhu in the first SF, two in form players. Zhu 4R AO and winner in Thailand. Still a little unsure how at 29 this form can just surface, but we’ll see how long she can maintain it. Cmon Donna.

2 tournaments get underway tonight, a 500 in Charleston, and a 250 in Bogota.
Charleston:
Pretty strong field, although a lot of the high seeds are well down on form. I’m interested in the return of Svitolina, if Kenin can keep her momentum, and if Bencic can regain her early season form. 2009 title winner Lisicki is back in a MD which is a great story. Fruhvirtova kicks off the action at midnight. I like Badosa, although the field is wide open.
Bogota:
The Bogota slam lives up to its reputation. Is that not the worst field you’ve ever seen for a 250? Wow. Who’ll win is anyone’s guess, absolute lottery. I mean Rakhimova is the 4th seed and her form is atrocious, pretty telling. Bouchard is here as WC, so that’s of interest. Avaneysan is here, always a good thing. Yastremska too, the talent to win this, but she could face Maria in the second round and she destroyed her in Thailand. Fun times ahead in Bogota!

probably both. The South American Swing in the mens isn't renowned for its strong fields either.
Charlestown is always interesting. Green Clay is unique. Bencic is defending champion, so big points to lose potentially.

Watched Fruhvirtova against Teichmann, very good win, another top 50 scalp. She has a lot of maturity on court. Took a bathroom break end of the second set, of course, and came out firing in the 3rd. She played a little more aggressive in this one, hit with good depth too. Serve is an issue though, 9 DF’s, and that second serve is so weak. Any really good player will just tee off on it. Still, she’s having a good year at only 17.
Just finished Bouchard, she surprised me. Opposition wasn’t very flash but still, considering her lack of tour matches and wins, it was impressive. She hit quite well off both wings, serve was very solid. A nice confidence booster, has Rakhimova next, great opportunity for both to reach a QF. On what I saw I’d give the edge to Genie.
