WTF is with the new AFL.COM.AU???

thanks :thumbsu:

whenever i load up afl.com.au or baggygreen.com.au my browser seems to freeze momentarily. very frustrating. afl.com.au is a terrible website.
Because they're (afl.com.au is at least, not sure about baggy green) Flash Based sites. I hate flash sites, they freeze everything up while they're loading.

Even if that was the case why is everyone attacking Telstra when its clearly the AFL's fault?

It like an adult (AFL) giving a 12 year old kid (Telstra) a beer in full knowledge something dodgy may happen yet the kid gets yelled at, not the adult.

How does that make sense?

The AFL should be held accountable for offloading their brand to companies with outside interests. Its simply ridiculous.

its like the afl being responsible for eddie commentating pies games, or if foxtel started advertising between goals. Once they sold the rights, without any clauses for confict of interests or % of advertising space, they dont have a say.

of course i think they were stupid to go to telstra again this year and should have looked at quality rather than the relatively small amount of money telstra are paying them

FWIW from a pure design perspective I reckon that the old site was laughable and well past its use-by date. Very last century.

While its in beta mode they're probably ironing out a few bugs so you'd hope that it will still improve; but i quite like it. Regardless, its design and style isn't dissimilar to most other large sports' sites. They all seem to be leading with large flash/video components as well as using small boxes/modules to house things like news, fixtures, ladders, results etc.

Take a look:

http://www.nfl.com

http://www.uefa.com/

http://www.nhl.com/

http://espn.go.com/

http://www.nba.com/

IMO - not a bad effort, might take some getting used to but definitely better than it was.

All of those s*** on the afl website from a long height.

Ok, I work for some of the biggest design agencies in the world including the some of the best advertising, web development, marketing etc. Have done so for ten years, have developed some of the most ground breaking work to date.

The AFL web site is owned and managed by telstra, they actually own the web rights and bought them for a song. not my area, but this site is telstra.

The design of the site is appalling and should not have been allowed to go live. It was design by a monkey on a type writer. Someone, somewhere has a contract with telstra that needs to be shredded. This site is garbage, everything is wrong with it from a design perspective. Absolute disgrace.

I can not belive it is worse than last years.

As far as functionality is concerned, again a completel balls up. Has already crashed IE on my machine which is a beast. Pathetic.

Telstra should be ashamed at actually put stuff like this out. But being Australia, with no real competition, llike everything else, its garbage and would get eaten alive in teh real world.

really poor stuff.

I have seen sites from 4 years ago that jsut walk all over this site. I could build a better site in three weeks that would do more and deliver more.

gotta stop. I am so angry that this has been put out in teh public domain.

here is a flash component based web site

ot was created years ago and is brilliant.

I believe it's C4 designing it... www.cfour.com.au
who also did the NRL one

wow  :thumbsu:

Very, very average. So damn commercial - 'AFL on the Gold Coast' - do they think of anything other than QLD/NSW? You wonder sometimes.

And adds, adds aplenty. No one cares. No one takes any notice of them. They are nuisences. Waste space which could be filled up with footballing material.

And not flashplayer up the top, please.

All that said, it's still an improvement on the 2005-2006 model.

I have always said that they should return to the 2001 model, which was outstanding. Get a news feed of the HS and The Age.

They have a page on the History of jumpers.
However the link mentions the unmentionable on Big Footy.
A
F
L HQ

Which apparently now makes the swear filter.

You'd need to know where to find it.
But it's there.

Argh, I'm out of a job.
Compare with http://www.footyjumpers.com

The link you gave didn't work Mero, everyone has to replace the ***s with **********, I think it's just the BF filter. Your site slaughters it.

Yeah, I edited the original post.
Apparently we can't discuss such things as
A
F
L HQ or
G.uer..seys. any more.

Probably so Big Footy doesn't get sued.

First 4 jumpers for 2007 are up.

Collingwood Home. Bigger numbers, neck is different. AFL logo on numbers.
Adelaide Home. Numbers have AFL logo on them.
Port Clash. New soccer goalie design, plus AFL logo on numbers.
North Away. New logo on Heritage vee. AFL logo on numbers.

NRL & NBL have had designs like this for sometime now, its all visually spiffy, usability shot out the window, it takes a very very long time to navigate to what you want to find, and takes too long to load on a slow connection, and even on medium connections...

on 2nd thought, this is a freakin nightmare

I thought you weren't allowed to have logos on them. Surely this would extend to numbers aswell?

afl website disgusting

sorry to start another thread but i had to point out some disgusting features that sorta had my eyes stretching to read the font properly.
Now normally, I would be able to read font of 7 or 8 pixels with little difficulty, and sometimes 6. I would need font 18 to read properly against their backgrounds.

that grey/yellow/wtf (whatever the...) that color is meant to be, its putrid, its awful, and its a bastard to have any colored font against it. Very hard to consistently stay reading the same line, and proceeding lines. Text is far too bunched, should of used either 12 sans or 11 verdana, not what looks to be 10 sans.

blue links ridiculous.

usability non-existent

links stupid

excessive use of imagery

VERY excessive use of javascript and flash

slow connection very unfriendly, 512k minimum for decent viewing and browsing

their CSS links very annoying and block screen, poorly located, and poorly colored.

and what the hell is the bar on the right supposed to be??

positives
improve functionality in limited sections
increased usability and eye candy, and actually working this year, the flash live scores
game time countdown
game schedule on main screen
some font colors, not font sizes

very unfriendly for vision impaired users (im half-blind myself), and a sh1t house website to boot.

i agree with some other users, they should of beta tested it to the public and received feedback before deploying such a waste of money.
