In the peak fortnight of the outbreak to date (25 August to 7 September), the COVID-19 case rate among 2-dose vaccinated people was 49.5 per 100,000 while in unvaccinated people it was 561 per 100,000, a more than 10-fold difference. The rates of COVID-19 ICU admissions or deaths peaked in the fortnight 8 September to 21 September at 0.9 per 100,000 in 2-dose vaccinated people compared to 15.6 per 100,000 in unvaccinated people, a greater than 16-fold difference.

Actually I think he is right about QLD admitting most if not all COVID cases currently - because numbers are small they can do it.
I think (happy to be corrected) that when they had the multiple school outbreak they isolated some positives at home, might have been different because usually kids have adults accompanying them to hospital, and that would mean the adult would still be exposed to infection anyway. Thats speculative as to the reason on my part.

Oh I wasn't commenting on his post. Just how obvious it was he'd missed that link in reply to his post.

Funny that.

A new COVID-19 variant which appears more potent than earlier forms is behind a spike in new cases in South Africa, according to the country's health authorities.

In an impromptu address late yesterday, South Africa's Health Minister and several experts warned mutations detected in the genetic code of the new COVID-19 variant could make the virus both more transmissible and better able to evade the immune system.

This is really bad news.

Apparently much more infectious and far better able to evade immune response.

Could have sworn the let it rip brigade were just recently telling us how good South Africa were doing because people weren't getting vaccinated so they were all gaining natural immunity.

People who point to 'no COVID in Africa' are skipping the fact that South Africa has a lot of COVID (and even there its woefully underreported due to the conditions of the poor Black people in Soweto etc).

The underreporting we see in Soweto shanty towns is almost certainly far (far) worse in places like the Congo and other central African nations.

In Queensland it's not just those in HQ. It's anyone who tests positive.

Anyone diagnosed with COVID-19 must travel directly to a designated COVID-19 hospital to isolate in a COVID-19 ward.

There's a few things to unpack there.

By 'diagnosed with COVID-19' they mean tested positive for the Sars-Cov-2 virus. This is a falsehood. The tests are unreliable. And a significant proportion of people do not go on to get COVID-19, especially children.

The rule is compulsory. Failure to comply can lead to a $13,785 fine or 6 months imprisonment.

Despite vaccination levels being 85% single dose, 75% double, Queensland is still operating on a zero Covid model. It can't last. Confining all who test positive in hospital is not only unnecessary from a health point of view but also unsustainable for hospital resourcing. Other states have moved to home quarantine even as cases rise.

The Northern Territory has gone one step further than Queensland. They are not just putting people who have tested positive into government confinement. They are putting "close contacts" of people who have tested positive into government camps. Anyone not compliant can face a $5,000 fine.

Yes, the army is taking people away on trucks. It's a direct quote from Michael Gunner.

From the Guardian piece that was linked.

We don’t need people out there creating another flood for us. We don’t appreciate outside people making comments that are untrue.

“People on social media saying that our people are being mistreated need to realise their comments are hurting the very people they claim to care about. We want people to respect our privacy and show respect for our feelings,” they said.

That's the bit addressed to you

I'd question the accuracy of almost all data out of Africa, given how much of the population doesn't have reliable access to health care.

They skew young, so fortunately they're a lower risk population demographic, but there'd be a hell of a lot of people getting exposed that have no real ability to seek medical care if they require it, and where it's unlikely anyone outside their community will ever know that they've died if they do.

Infectious disease has been a huge problem in much of Africa for a long time.
If we have people saying, "its no worse than the flu " , they may well have people saying, "whatever ....We just got over the Ebola outbreak"
People with compromised immune systems may not have lived long enough to catch Covid.

Irresponsible headline writing by the ABC. It is not yet clear how transmissible it is or the level of disease severity but they run with that quote. Shitty click baiting.

Heavily mutated coronavirus variant puts scientists on alert - nature
The variant stood out because it contains more than 30 changes to the spike protein — the SARS-CoV-2 protein that recognizes host cells and is the main target of the body’s immune responses.

It is unclear whether the variant is more transmissible than Delta, says Moore, because there are currently low numbers of COVID-19 cases in South Africa. “We’re in a lull,” she says. Katzourakis says that countries where Delta is highly prevalent should be watching for signs of B.1.1.529. “We need to see what this virus does in terms of competitive success and whether it will increase in prevalence.”

Your own article says this:

Researchers spotted B.1.1.529 in genome-sequencing data from Botswana. The variant stood out because it contains more than 30 changes to the spike protein — the SARS-CoV-2 protein that recognizes host cells and is the main target of the body’s immune responses. Many of the changes have been found in variants such as Delta and Alpha and are linked to heightened infectivity and the ability to evade infection-blocking antibodies.

But the variant’s apparent sharp rise in South Africa’s Gauteng province — home to Johannesburg — is also setting off alarm bells. Cases increased rapidly in the province in November, particularly in schools and among young people, according to Lessells.

Are we comparing infectivity with the original strain? Because yes it is going to be worse than that. I don’t think that is the implication in the ABC’s headline though. Does it read like it is going to be worse than the delta strain? It is not possible at the moment to say it is more infective than the delta strain there just isn’t enough data and they should not be implying that in their headline.

The strain is new, so no peer review etc, but they have identified several areas of concern in mutations to the spike protein, all of which indicate that its both more transmissible, and it evades immune response better than Delta.

I dont think it's a misrepresentation by the ABC (or anyone for that matter) to make the claims they did.

Sounds like the concern is that those who are vaccinated or already had Covid, could still catch that strain.

They can still catch the other strains. The unvaccinated (natural immunity) people just get re-infected at 5 times the rate of their vaccinated peers.

Unvaccinated people who had a recent infection were five times more likely to be reinfected with the coronavirus compared to those who were fully vaccinated and didn't have a prior infection, according to a new study published Friday in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report.

This variant just seems to be better at evading those protections and infecting people than even Delta was.

That's not true. The WebMD report is an inaccurate summary of the research paper.

Laboratory-confirmed SARS-CoV-2 infection was identified among 324 (5.1%) of 6,328 fully vaccinated persons and among 89 of 1,020 (8.7%) unvaccinated, previously infected persons.

Note all the caveats they added to their results.

It also goes against previous findings.

vaccinated have 13 fold increased risk for infection with the Delta variant compared to natural immunity
those vaccinated had a 7 fold increased risk for symptomatic disease compared to natural immunity
those vaccinated had a 6.7-fold increased risk to be hospitalised compared to recovered individuals with natural immunity

What a shock that the WHO seems to have skipped a letter of Greek alphabet and gone to Omnicrom. Cant have the worst strain having the same name as their paymaster even if he is the main person to blame for millions of deaths so far.

I like that Omicron sounds like Macron

makes it that bit harder for the campaigner to get re-elected if the strain blows up

imagine if just before the election next year a ‘new’ strain was ‘discovered’ and named the Albanese, but luckily here is this (prepared earlier) vaccine we’ve called the Scomo 😒
