In the peak fortnight of the outbreak to date (25 August to 7 September), the COVID-19 case rate among 2-dose vaccinated people was 49.5 per 100,000 while in unvaccinated people it was 561 per 100,000, a more than 10-fold difference. The rates of COVID-19 ICU admissions or deaths peaked in the fortnight 8 September to 21 September at 0.9 per 100,000 in 2-dose vaccinated people compared to 15.6 per 100,000 in unvaccinated people, a greater than 16-fold difference.

There are a lot of cases in my local community. 4 primary schools have been closed. There are dozens of other cases amongst adults that I know.

Separate to that, we went on an annual camping weekend with friends. Not from our local community. They reported similar anecdotal situations in their respective LGAs.

I watched Channel 7 news today. They reported that the number of Omicron infections in NSW had 'surged' to 25. And that the vaccines were being rolled out to 5 year olds as it was 'important to protect them'. And that there had been a spike in the number of children with Omicron in hospital - but did not say if they were in hospital because of Omicron.

This is crazy stuff. Does anyone still believe this bullshit being peddled by the mainstream media?

Omicron variant may have picked up a piece of common-cold virus

The Omicron variant of the virus that causes COVID-19 likely acquired at least one of its mutations by picking up a snippet of genetic material from another virus - possibly one that causes the common cold - present in the same infected cells, according to researchers.

This could mean the virus transmits more easily, while only causing mild or asymptomatic disease. Scientists do not yet know whether Omicron is more infectious than other variants, whether it causes more severe disease or whether it will overtake Delta as the most prevalent variant. Children are extremely unlikely to be hospitalised due to COVID. But they are commonly admitted to hospital for broken bones, wounds requiring stitches, burns, ear nose and throat issues etc. Those children may also test positive for the virus.

Other children that have some COVID symptoms may be taken to hospital but it's rare that overnight stays and medical interventions are required.

It's all finger in the air stuff. Not many labs have the capability to do gene sequencing to detect omicron. Not that many tests are referred to those labs.

Of course, the media will look to exploit the fear. But governments need to take a measured approach.

The US non health care system is full of distortion anyway - my understanding is that it should be set in a dumpster and burnt, then implement a taxation based universal health care.
Perhaps these payments would be for patients who otherwise would be unable to afford care/ be not covered.

- “lower standards of care” means having to use less trained staff to man icu etc, or develop ceilings of care due to rationing issues. Again common in pandemic.

I’ve mentioned this on another thread, but apparently this is one of the largest public forums in the country. I asked Chief for confirmation but he was a bit coy...

Anyway it would be naive to think there weren’t posters who are here to spread misinformation. You don’t have to squint too hard to see who they are- stacks of links to dodgy sources, quickly able to produce graphs and tables often wilfully misrepresenting the source, any number of antivax talking points they drop and then circle back to at a later date- and they’ve been very active the last 18 months.
