Draconian measures, coming to a Western democracy near you

Italy brings in draconian measures in effort to halt coronavirus spread
Measures include fines for anyone caught entering or leaving outbreak areas

How infectious is this?

A keen runner, the 38-year-old recently took part in a number of races. His pregnant wife is also infected, as is a person who went running with the man. Three other cases in Lombardy are elderly people who frequented a bar in the town of Codogno, near Lodi, that is owned by the father of the man who went running with the 38-year-old.

So basically no increase in cases in australia is what you thought 3 weeks ago. I was fearing 5000 cases by now.
You’re an idiot then. The quarantine issued by the government on China (as well as China’s extreme measures) likely slowed things down considerably. But now that it has taken hold in five countries across the globe, it is probably at pandemic stage now.

well if there's any substance to your fear, we're hearing JS on topic from our authorities, AND for the last batch of visitors who arrived from china on the 1st feb [those told to self isolate for only 14days, without supervision] it is now the 24th ... 24days being - since - the much referenced possible incubation period.
s**t could be about to hit the AU fan.

imho

Seeds as you can see from the video thumbnail above, South Korea went from 206 to 602 cases in two days, with another 1000 from that church group showing symptoms who haven't been tested yet.

Have a listen to the doc; he has some interesting things to say about Australia and the UK's ostrich approach.
Yeah because one crazy dude went around spreading it. It isnt spreading from normal responsible people doing the right thing like a flu does.

A global bank in Seoul has just asked all foreigner workers to leave and locals to work two weeks in the office and two weeks at home. This is a sensible position but suggests the issue has a way to run before controlled.

Hitting the airline industry hard. Flights Melbourne to KL $89, Air Asia on Facebook. Lots of comments "lets go to Bangkok for $100!!!" etc. Sure, go.
A friend who works at Brisbane airport says he's never seen it so quiet. Just dead.

A friend lecturing at UQ is run off her feet getting entire courses online so Chinese students can continue their degrees.

ABC Radio and The Australian (paywall)

1500 Chinese university students have been able to beat the travel ban and have arrived here - they sit out a 14-day quarantine period in a third country and then come to Australia

What could possibly go wrong?

I guess it depends on where they sit out their 14 days.

It is time to expand the travel bans to South Korea, and require self isolation to anyone who has been to Japan or Italy.

I'm reading that authorities are conceding (or starting to) that and working out ways health professionals can survive while dealing with the pandemic.

China has just added almost a thousand deaths.
Gone well past SARS1 in terms of deaths.
