For me PS3 is WAY better. I think blu-ray is a huge advantage and I can't stand the crappy xbox controllers. I no a few people with both systems and they all rekon the PS3 is better. Also everyone is comparing prices and everything, this should just be if you won a contest and had to choose one system, which one would you choose, but lets face it everyone with an xbox will vote for xbox and everyone with a ps3 will vote ps3.

The blueray / HD DVD battle is really hurting the PS3 IMO. Unlike the PS2's timely release as a DVD player, the 'High Definition' generation is a split market with many movie studios producing exclusives for one format but not the other. My old man tried to buy an HD DVD Player that had a hard-drive and was multi-regioned. - Doesn't exist... He concluded it was the wrong time to go HD and I agree. Funnily enough, up-scaled DVDs seem to be all the rage in this country ahead of true HD. Not only that, Blue-rays / HD DVDs cost twice the amount of regular DVDs, and require a long list of hi-fi equipment to get the most out of: HDMI, 1080p, Dolby 5.1. - HDMI cables actually cost $100! A massive rip-off!

The market's just not ready for Blue-ray, and I think it's been somewhat of a deterrent for console buyers. Unfortunately, you can't buy a PS3 that doesn't include a Blue-Ray player. - It is a mandatory investment. The only package Sony have come up with is a PS3 with a smaller hard-drive and no playback feature for PS2 games. - Something that gamers might actually value more than a Blue-Ray player.

It's a been a case of poor marketing due to poor research IMO.

if you pay $100 for HDMI cable you are getting massively ripped off. You can pick up HDMI 1.3 cables with gold connectors on ebay for $25. Its a digital cable, so it either works or it doesnt work. For short cable runs, i.e. 5m or less, there is no need to be paying $100. Most people have their xbox360/ps3, dvd player and AV reciever sitting right under the TV so a 2m cable for $25 is fine.

on blu-ray v hd dvd, not sure if either format will win the battle, but at the moment blu-ray player sales are much higher than hd dvd player sales, and blu-ray movies are outselling hd dvd movies by 3-to-1. no doubt the 3 million + PS3s are boosting the sales of blu-ray players. If the PS3 can get some good exclusive games out, starting to happen now, they will go a long way to extending the lead blu-ray has over hd dvd.

Iv always bought the Play Stations for one reason, The controllers. The PS3 i think has better graphics and has blue ray but the 360 is cheaper, Has better online play and a whole lot more games. So right at this minute the 360 wins hands down (that was tough for me to say seeing im all for Sony). Though when the price drops and the ps3 gets all the good games in 08 i think they should be on level terms.

Willow, at this stage there is no difference between PS3 and 360 graphics. Developers need to get use to the PS3's cell which by all means is VERY hard to do. Probably the main flaw of the PS3

Been a playstation man for years.

Got the original playstation all those years and thrashed it for hours on end.

Then got the Playstation 2 the day it came out back in late 2000.

Haven't got the PS3 yet, but it is only a matter of time.

PS3 smokes the competition from what i have heard.

i love my ps3 and call of duty 4, but whoever said there was no lag on ps3 online is a ****ing liar.

call of duty 4 is a nightmare if you get stuck on an online server. i'd love to pay $100 a year to have a dedicated australian server like xbox!!

there are no Australian xbox live servers.

Then why has is sold 7 million consoles less then 360, and 8 million less then wii?
UMMMM.

Maybe consider the fact the 360 was released close to 1 year before the PS3 and the Wii about 5-6 months before.

Globally i think the Wii only debuted a week before the PS3.

The wii aside, its smashing everything, the ps3 isn't doing too badly considering its price and lack of software. Of course its still miles behind in sales because of how late it was released, but in terms of rate of sales its only slightly behind the 360.

Its a good thing, the games industry needs a strong showing from sony to stay healthy. Still its a massive gap to make up, and given its actually selling slightly slower than the 360, its getting further and further behind. There is more than double the amount of 360's out there, and i guess thats sorta reflected in this poll.

Interesting what people think about the xbox controllers. I actually prefer them to the ps3/2 ones by a mile. When i bought my original xbox after owning playstations for so long, they took a while to get used to, mainly the bulkiness. The 360 controller is far more streamlined and comfortable now, while the ps ones feel sorta angular and uncomfortable.

Personal taste i guess.

I'm looking to purchase one of these systems for christmas, and I still don't know which way to go. I've heard about how some XBoxes have overheating problems and that problem where the light turns another colour or something.

Are they safe to purchase?

Don't worry about reliability. all the consoles have worked out those problems already.

Choose which console has the games you would prefer to have.

Don't look at the AMMOUNT of games, i don't know anyone who buys every exclusive game. and i doubt you would either. so just look at which console has the few games that you really want and then get that one.

If you're buying a new console don't even worry about it, the problem has been addressed in the new 360's.

It is true that the 360 has had some technical issues. The problem you mentioned, which is called the Red ring of death (RRoD), is said to have occurred in nearly 30% of consoles purchased early in its release. It's a general hardware failure, allegedly due to soldering in the the cpu failing due to overheating. There were a few failures with the dvd drives as well, mainly due to one faulty brand of drive used when demand for the console exceeded microsoft supply of their preferred drive. This drive is no longer used.

Microsoft admitted that they were seeing an unacceptable number of consoles being returned for repair, and as a result increased the warranty for the xbox to 3 years. Modifications, including a larger heatsink, have reduced failure rates significantly. Indeed, failures are only really common in consoles built in 05 and 06, before microsoft started improving the console. Also, all new xbox 360 elites and premiums now have the Falcon motherboard. This is far more robust, and runs cooler and quieter. Failures should be a thing of the past.

In short, if you're buying off ebay...beware! But a new console should give you years of problem free gaming, with the peace of mind of a 3 year warranty.

Yeah thats why I bought the Elite and asked to see the build date on the console before handing over my $$$

In the US HD DVD is doing better, and its very close between Blu-ray and HD DVD, but here HD DVD has really neglected the market and latest sales figures in Australia are quite poor:

number of stand alone Blu-ray players on sale :11
number of stand alone HD DVD players on sale: 3
stand alone Blu-ray players sold: 2,241
stand alone HD DVD players sold: 609
PS3 sold: 100,000+
HD DVD add-on for xbox 360 sold: 2,461
Blu-ray movies sold: 102,000
HD DVD movies sold: 18,000

Overall the uptake on HD media here in Oz is very slow, compared to US sales figures

number of stand alone Blu-ray players sold: 370,000
number of stand alone HD DVD players sold: 578,000
PS3 sold: 2.3 million
HD DVD add-on for xbox 360 sold: 300,000

the PS3 is giving Blu-ray a big advantage, and its reflected in the number of movies sold which is heavily in favour of Blu-ray all over the world.

I bought mine off ebay and it works fine. It was only 3 months old when i got it about 2 months ago. Just have to get a reliable seller. I've had no problems with it and saved big $$$

Ok, I'm saving up to buy one of these consoles...before i found this thread it was gonna be the ps3 coz i already have a ps2 and yeh jsut made sense..
Can anyone do a pro/con for both consoles that includes pricing, reliabilty, quality games, online etc. all the good stuff.

??

Ill give it a shot, but there will be alot of things i will miss

360: Pros:
Best online
Best exclusive games
Best overall games
Cheap
Gives you the option of wether you need a hard drive / HD DVD
Biggest online community
Games can be found for about 20 bucks cheaper then the ps3 versions
Arcade games

Cons:
Have to pay for online (about 70 a year off ebay)
If you buy the arcade console and wish to buy a hard drive they cost ridiculous amounts
No form of motion sensing (even though the ps3's virtually does nothing so this can be a pro)
Hardware faults (wont be a problem if you're buying a brand new console)

PS3: Pros:
Free online
Good exclusive games
Home
Bluray free
Hard drive compulsory
Sometime in the future its graphics might overtake that of the 360's
PSN games

Cons:
Lack of good games
Forces bluray on you, if the console didnt have blu ray it would be alot cheaper.
Expensive
Laggy online (but its free)

Theyre equal on the media side so yeah.

The price of either console is neither a Pro or Con.

The PS3 is now at a price of $598, barely the price of a game more than the 360.

Also the games are the same price pretty much everywhere, it is only at places such as EB Games that charge $120 for a new release game, for example in the recent Big W catalogue new release games were $78.84 on both consoles

He said to incorporate price, and with the new Ps3 being 598, where are they selling that? Thats a great deal
