It's a non issue because parents often help their children to get ahead by using their connections to find employment.
The difference between AFL journalism and other industries is that nepo babies are so dominant compared to the general population of journalism grads, that it's basically a closed shop.

I work in Engineering. The vast majority of people entering the industry don't have an internal connection. The same is true of most professions.

Regardless of what you think about how he got the the position he is in, He is currently doing a great job.
Very savvy of him to straddle the line of traditional and non-traditional media.

To be honest when he first came on the scene I wanted to hate him because of the nepo baby stuff but he's won me over.

A lot of bright young budding journos have the ability to grow on us and become very good journos. The question is why many don't get the opportunity especially in football journalism where nepotism seems more prevalent. The industry is already far too insular.

There is no difference. Parents use connections to help their children find employment. And this does not have to be in the same industry. You really don't understand human nature.

Of course they do, that's not exactly a state secret and if I were Eddie, I would do the same, and if I were Xander, I'd accept the help. The problem lies not with the individual parent, but with the recruiters/leadership in the industry who accept this kind of nepotism en masse.

After all, most people do not have parents with influence.

And this does not have to be in the same industry.
It doesn't technically have to be, but parents are much much, much, more likely to have influence in the industry where they themselves are senior heavies.

You really don't understand human nature.
I have some kind of handle on it. As discussed above, I don't blame Eddie and Xander for taking opportunities. But it doesn't disguise the fact that if he weren't a nepo baby, there's no realistic chance he would be a paid AFL journo.

We have no idea whether Xander would be an AFL journalist or in any other role in a different industry. Xander has a right to work so its irrelevant what is his job.

I like him mainly cause he isn't trying too hard and is quite natural in front of a camera. Yes, he got a leg-up from Ed, but he has talent and is likeable. Compare that to someone like smug McClure (also got where he is from his Dad) who is completely "plastic" and always trying to be in with "the boyz". Apples and oranges.

The topic of Xander is something that frustrates me greatly at times. As someone who works in the media, it is such a hard slog to make it to the top rungs of the industry... that's if you are lucky enough to be presented with the opportunity.

During my teens, I reached out to every organisation consistently for any opportunity to shadow or undertake volunteer opportunities. Absolutely nothing came from that. Not even response.

I then went to university for three years (waste of time mind you) and after graduating secured a job as a regional journo in 2019. At the height of the pandemic, I was essentially sub-editing and contributing content for at least 4-5 regional papers across SA on probably $50k per year. Additionally, I was living in a caravan park 380km away from friends and family.

I have been living back in the city for a few years now, and last year, I undertook volunteer media duties for South Adelaide in the SANFL, worked with the ABC Sport team casually to put together television content, produced my own freelance work, as well as worked a full-time role as a media advisor. Essentially working seven days a week just to get my foot in the sports media door.

The point of my rambling is that I have just turned 29, and since beginning my career in the media at the age of 22-23, I have not even come close to the roles and opportunities that those like Xander etc are presented with. I don't even get job interviews for those types of roles. Maybe they are just generational media talents... happy to have that discussion.

As many have said, I would be helping my kids if I could, but lets not pretend that Xander and co are being presented with some of the biggest roles in footy due to being generational media performers.

“but lets not pretend that Xander and co are not being presented……”
No, the original was correct.

"lets not pretend that Xander and co are being presented with some of the biggest roles in footy due to being generational media performers"

IE Xander is not getting these incredible opportunities simply because he is an incredible talent.
