Me neither.. nothing player, who when fit doesn't fill any need whatsoever

Even when he was fit he was in and out of the hawks team in the past couple of years, why would we want a player that can't crack the 22 of the only club going around that can beat us?

Been living off his terrific 2008 grand final for 5 years now. Is generally good user of the ball, though. Costs us nothing, and change of scenery might help him. Still a bit surprised tbh.

He was a gun, but he was crippled by injuries. He could be an inspired pickup, but my gut says no. For those who don't remember him i reckon he was a good ball winner with an accurate, but not penetrating left foot kick. He was tough, but not physically imposing, maybe similar to Dal Santo, but with a shorter kick & a bit more inside. Unfortunately, he will probably be remembered for his injuries. Anybody who knows better please correct me

I wouldn't have picked Dal as a natural comparison, but you're probably not far off in terms of skill set. He's quicker over the ground than Dal though, but I'd say he doesn't quite have the natural footy nous that Dal has either.

Either way. His ability is not the issue - anybody doubting that doesn't have a clue. It's his physical ability to build through a pre-season and play out the year that's the issue - he just can't seem to do it. Given he's not really the sort we need, I can't see us going to hard for him.

No thanks wasn't enough. No f***ing way. He'd be nothing more than depth. Instead of targeting him, we should be playing the likes of Sheridan/Crozier/Neale/Sutty etc. Develop the kids.

Well then I guess I don't have a clue. Because I cannot see one midfielder in our team that I'd replace with Ellis. He is a clever, neat sort of player that can play a role but he isn't very fast, he isn't very big, he can't kick it very long and his disposal is nothing special. And he couldn't get into the hawks midfield regularly even when he was fit. I just don't see why we would want him.

Reading back, not "having a clue" isn't right - it's an opinion after all, I wasn't trying to have a go at anybody. But still, I've seen Ellis do some good things, his skill set is is AFL level without a doubt IMHO.

Anyway, what I flat out agree with is that he's really not needed on our list, not in any priority - he's not going to push anybody out in a hurry (except maybe our young kids, but that would stunt their development so wouldn't be a good thing) and he's so injury prone that he'd hardly be dependable even if he could.

Free to a good home. He has all the talent but can't get on the park. Would be an inspired pick up if you pull it off but with his history with injuries I highly doubt it could happen.

Why do I have this gut Feeling Xavier Ellis from your mob can be a similar recruit Like how the Hawks got Stewart Dew at the end of 2007?

No bloody way. Do not want. Not under any circumstances, even if we get 1 good year out of him he will just be keeping the younger guys out of the team. Not even a half decent tagger or run with player...

Not sure we need him tbh. I remember his GF game in 2008, he was very good that day. He can play no doubt, however he's injury prone and that is what we don't need. RTB mentioned him tonight on 6PR, nothing specific just that he's available under Free Agency.

Hi All,

Just thought here in 1 spot can discuss all about Xavier Ellis.

Based on history records he was draft pick no 3 in 2005 AFL Draft. Same draft as Dale Thomas, Marc Murphy,Scott Pendelbry and Johsh Kennedy etc.

Not bad if he can get his body right, would be a bargain of a find. At least we can say skills are there and he is only 25 so can give us another 5-7 years whilst Crozier, sutcliffe, sheridan, simpson get their apprenticeship done get their bodies right engines larger and muscle on.

From looking at the list of players in that draft it takes average 4-5 years for midfielders to grow into top players.

Another surprise was in the 2005 draft we got a one Marcus Drum at pick 10 when we could have got someonel ike Nathan Jones or Shannon Hurn etc rather than our reject Drum who cant even be seen. I guess no point crying over spilt milk era when we use to recruit disastrously.

Who was our recruiting man then !!!! Assume not Loydy

He was also the norm smith winner until he injured himself towards the end of the GF in 2008. Was a star that day, proven big game player. Gets his body right and he will be good.

not a bad get, tough to see who's spot he takes. Again though - can't play all year, so gives a chance to play kids and rest him for finals, developing kids and keeping them happy as well as getting a better best 22.

looks like Dockers and Adelaide are keen, but we don't really want another player who is plagued by injuries

i dont see it a problem, as the fact that we have to manage him strengthens our 22 but also gives kids a spot to come in when resting him for 4-5 games and hopefully get a spot in the 22 themselves.
he could play 5, then rest 5. (kid oppurtunity) then play 5, rest 5 (another kid oppurtunity) then play into finals.

No room left if we're upgrading tabs, signed Silvia and taking a further 2 picks in the draft.. Although of course the likes of Michie & Mellington could be traded as well as potentially a blindsided trade ala. Broughts too, still - I just don't see a spot in the 22 for Ellis. Even when fit. Our gameplan's too physical for him to play out a full season uninjured.
