Hawthorn left-footer Xavier Ellis could become a second free agency pick-up for Fremantle, pending the club's assessment on his durability.
The 25-year-old was the No.3 draft pick in 2005 and one of the best players on the ground in the 2008 grand final win against Geelong when he had 28 possessions and kicked a goal.
But he has had a wretched run with injury since 2010, playing just 16 games for a career total of 86 in eight seasons since he made his debut in 2006.
He played just twice for the Hawks in 2013, against West Coast in round 13 and against Brisbane the following week.
Fremantle coach Ross Lyon is said to be a fan, but wants more information on Ellis' durability. The midfielder has been plagued by knee and calf problems.
The Dockers are likely to finalise a three-year $1.05 million deal to secure Melbourne's Colin Sylvia quickly, possibly today.

Something is starting to smell a bit whiffy. Hold on to your hats girls and boys.I don't want him. We look like we are stock piling midfielders and think we need a few spots for our young ones to get a game. It makes me wonder if we are going to trade one or two Broughton style? Melbourne are offering pick 2 but I can't see us paying that price unless they get desperate. 1st rounder + Clancee + Suban?

If Ellis can be a key player in the Hawks 2008 GF side and nearly win the Norm Smith then he is good enough to play as a Freo regular. That is of course if he could get his body in the same condition as 2008 which we all would have serious reservations about.
Of late he still seems to get get games when fit but reminds me of Luke Ball when he had groin problems - seems to have problems kicking over 40m.

At least be realistic... Melbourne are not going to part with pick 2 for a bunch of fringe best-22 players.
Every board seems to think they can package up XYZ no-trade-value players and thinks that somehow equates to a high draft pick. It never happens. I don't know why people engage in that sort of thinking.
This would be a more realistic scenario.

You have to give quality to get quality.

I think we are grabbing him for insight into the Hawks game plan. Sort of like purchasing intellectual property. Ellis knows his body is limited. We'll try and nab someone from Hawthorn in the next few weeks. Either coaching panel or player.
If that's the case, our coaches have had a lobotomy. Does Ross seem dim to you?

I guess the Ellis thing is, get one in for free and trade one out to help us get what we need. Time will tell.
We will still have years of recruiting to do before that happens. Our midfield has Fyfe, Hill, Neale, Barlow, Walters, Morabito??? Suban Crozier, Sheridan, Sutcliffe, Simpson, Clancee who are very young. Ellis 26. Mzungu, Pearce ,and Silvia are only 27. Mundy 28. If we lose one to get something we need we will still be ok long-term. They will only do it if it will improve the team. This is the bit that kind of worries me. Surely we wouldn't be trying to acquire him to trade him - which could mean we are looking at trading our young, promising mids. Which is sort of fine in the short term, but could potentially find us in Schwabolly territory in a few years. (touch wood)
Hi All,
Just thought here in 1 spot can discuss all about Xavier Ellis.
Based on history records he was draft pick no 3 in 2005 AFL Draft. Same draft as Dale Thomas, Marc Murphy,Scott Pendelbry and Johsh Kennedy etc.
Not bad if he can get his body right, would be a bargain of a find. At least we can say skills are there and he is only 25 so can give us another 5-7 years whilst Crozier, sutcliffe, sheridan, simpson get their apprenticeship done get their bodies right engines larger and muscle on.
From looking at the list of players in that draft it takes average 4-5 years for midfielders to grow into top players.
Another surprise was in the 2005 draft we got a one Marcus Drum at pick 10 when we could have got someonel ike Nathan Jones or Shannon Hurn etc rather than our reject Drum who cant even be seen. I guess no point crying over spilt milk era when we use to recruit disastrously.
Who was our recruiting man then !!!! Assume not Loydy
That's why I said unless they get desperate. 2 x young best 22 midfielders from the GF team to go from pick 2 to 18 isn't the end of the world for a side with basically 1.5 midfielders. They need hard bodies as they have some up coming young mids in Tompas and Viney who need some protection. At least be realistic... Anyone know how Ellis went with his durability test by Freo? Like most job interviews if you get to a medical, you have pretty much got the job.
