Xavier Ellis

He's a good player but his body is pretty beat up. Had a few soft tissue injuries and does himself no favours with his courage when he does play, he cops some big hits willingly when his body is not built for it.

he's definitely a gamble though, would like to see him go well somewhere.

Old news but..
RUMOUR - Oct 11: Unwanted Hawk Xavier Ellis is set to undergo a medical at Fremantle, but the Dockers aren't yet sold on the midfielder

For a team with as good a list as you, if he comes cheap he would be a good depth player at least. At best, he could edge his way into the best 22.

Its only a gamble if he is on more then 200/250k a year.

We don't have the same neverending salary cap that you guys do!

To be a good depth player you need to be on the park in the twos and going well. X hasn't been able to get on the park for extended periods thats why he's a gamble. It's been a never ending battle for him and has no doubt been frustrating for him and the club, thats why he's on the move.

An average depth player in the 2's is w waste of a spot. A player that has proven big match experience, at his best is a gun and only 26....even though he has had a horror injury run, if he is cheap the reward far out ways the risk. Thats why I do not think it is a gamble.

With your list, it would be a good pick up. For a Melbourne, Bulldogs etc.... it would not be worth it.

Thats what I think anyway.

Yeah I'm looking at it from a Hawthorn perspective. I'd like to see him at Freo and playing well.

Ellis and Gumbleton both around 25 won't agree to go anywhere un les it is at least a 2 yr contract preferably 3yrs. they know how fragile their bodies are. If we have either one or both I can see them playing 2-3 consecutive games then being "rested" for about another 3. RTB's game plan requires total physical commitment.

Then one has to factor in fortnightly travel - see above about being rested. I can't see either one passing a searching physical examination

No thanks. No thanks.

Ellis currently doesn't have an offer from Hawthorn and Gumby's last contract was a year so I disagree. Both guys are almost scrap heap so could be cheap

It depends how much we are going to pay him. If it's really cheap, then maybe it is OK. But at some point, you have to draw the line at paying players mid-range wages (e.g. $250-300k) to move clubs to sit on the list as depth. It all adds up, and limits funds for the good players and top FA targets.

I'd rather have a rookie salary in the list spot that Ellis occupies. We already have enough depth in smalls/mids. I don't think he will add enough value to our squad that justifies whatever we might pay him.

I'd rather we not get him. Just keep playing Neale, get more games into him and he'll be more of an asset to us than Ellis.

As a hawks supporter I can tell you that Xavier Ellis is low risk high reward prospect for you guys. He was touted as our future captain in his first 2years years with Hawthorn before the injuries started. He is a very smart and highly skilled player who unfortunately has a body that struggles with the physical side of the game. That's why we have persisted with him injured for so many years. We have basically had him sitting on our list for 3yrs not playing much at all hoping that he gets a clear run with injuries. The risk you run is that his injuries persist and he doesn't make it onto the ground. However the upside is that he overcomes the niggles (none of his injuries are what you would call career ending) and you add a high b-grader / approaching A-grader to your list for free. I would personally love to give him one more year at the Hawks but it seems like there is a statute of limitations on injury time you can put in at one club and the X-Man has reached his at Hawthorn.

Am I the only person that noticed this in the (shocking) article?

Gumbleton, 25, could become a greater priority in Fremantle’s determined search for a power forward with growing doubts that Geelong veteran and 2011 premiership sharpshooter James Podsiadly will join the Dockers.
Podsiadly, 32, has all but ruled out a shift interstate and his only hopes of continuing his AFL days could be at Carlton after also considering offers of a switch to Adelaide.

Kim Hagdorn has so little credibility that if he told me the sun was going to rise tomorrow I wouldn't believe him.

Both Sylvia and Ellis would have been better suited to the Eagles given their lack of midfield talent at the moment. I guess Homer Simpson would have intimate knowledge of Ellis after being at Hawthorn as an assistant coach.
