A few key points

Xbox pros:

1) Slightly better online, a few less griefers (since not many people pay money to grief others)
2) Cheaper
3) Can be easily modded to play burnt games, if you are into that

PS3:

1) Free online
2) IMO the PS3 exclusive games are a bit better

Personal preference:

1) What do your mates play?
2) Which controller do you like better? You can always get 3rd party ones though. I have a sweet Razer one for 360.
3) Any exclusive games take your fancy?

Don't be fooled by anyone saying one plays games better than the other. The PS3 has better hardware but it's irrelevant given games need to run on the 360 too. Even PS3 exclusive games don't look noticeably better than games that also run on the 360. Both consoles only run games at 720p and will look significantly worse than a decent computer playing the same game.

The odd game will run better on one than the other. Fallout 3, for example, runs better on 360 than PS3. Gamespot gave it 9 on PC and 360 but only 8.5 on PS3 because of this. Some run better on PS3. In my time I reckon I've seen more than run better on 360 than PS3 but I wouldn't bother about this. I'm a PC gamer largely. Consoles will always lag in comparison so you just have to get used to it.

Xbox Live is better because in my opinion it has a better gaming community and more hardcore gamers. You won't get as many 10 year old kids well that's my belief anyway. You also get downloads before PS3 do. Xbox Live is also never down. Xbox Live also feels more immersive in my opinion. There's far better communication options etc. You also get a headset free with your Xbox so if your a type who likes to chat while playing games you'd like that. But I wouldn't choose a console based on what online is better. That's just stupid both online services work fine.

I experienced lots of 10 year olds in 2009 when I got it but haven't experienced many since. I say PS3 has more ten year olds because PS3 appeals way more to 10 year olds than Xbox does. When I was that age I never even though about owning an Xbox. PS3 seems more child friendly.

PS3's are actually chaper now than 360's......

To people about the faults of the 360 hardware:

And any issues the 360 hardware used to have are gone.

To OP:

If you can't decide, flip a coin. it sounds like most of the games you want to play are available on both platforms

I used to have both but ended up selling my PS3 as I just wasn't using it anymore. Overall I agree with buy whatever your mates use, that's the most important factor for me. The biggest pro of the xbox is the controller imo, has a much greater feel to it.

With PSN you get what you pay for. XBL has never been down for weeks at a time. With game exclusives the PS3 probably wins over the xbox with Uncharted, MGS4, Killzone, Resistance, Heavy Rain etc. Xbox does have some quality ones though like Gears, Halo and Forza. IMO XBL is much better than PSN with features like cross game chat and invite to game that the PS3 doesn't have, the PS3 mics also sound like shit. Blu Ray is nice but I'm fine with regular dvds. A drag on the PS3 is that you have to install most games to hard drive. So if you want to play with and talk to friends get the xbox, if solo get the PS3.

Rule 1. Get the one your mates have so you can play online with them.

Remember the console generations before online gaming became the standard? You'd get the other console to your best mate so that you could experience all the great games that came out and not miss out on any.

Nowadays the single most important factor is get the console your mates have. Everything is secondary to that.

There's very few console exclusives that would make you gravitate towards one system over another.

If you really want both, I'd buy a 360 then wait for the xmas sales to come out and upgrade your flat-screen with a new Sony Bravia that will come with a free PS3. It's what I did. And I haven't turned my PS3 on in about 3 months.

Haha, yep. I had segas and my mates had NES's. Although you still argued all the time about which one was better. MK is better on SNES than Mega Drive etc etc

PS3 is a boss media server as well if you are into that sort of thing.

They're pretty identical in this regard, I have an old school 2006 vintage 360 in my home theater which is used for pretty much exclusively this purpose

Bulldust. Red blood vs Grey Sweat. Fatalites screwed with on SNES. Mega Drive was a mans console, SNES was for the kiddies ;)

While i never would have admitted it at the time, MK2 played better on snes than on the MD. Had a quicker pace so blocking was harder, and Lui Kangs bicycle kick had the arcade version sound effect

"WUULALALALALALALA"

The blutooth mics are shit quality
Spec wise they are far better quality than the one you get for free with the 360 (you know they cost about $5 - generous - to make?). Likely just people don't have them set up right.

I like PS3 better but the $5 cheap 360 ones are better than the Official PS3 Bluetooth one IMO.

Bluetooth one very uncomfortable as well.

Am thinking about getting a console. The last one I purchased was a PS1 in the mid-late nineties. I pretty much played one game exclusively - FIFA Road to World Cup '98. Will likely do something similar this time. Have very few friends who consider this sort of thing not to be a colossal waste of time. Actually, have very few friends full stop, but that's a whole different discussion. Also, is either console more financially viable than the other? Is it worth going down the second-hand path?

You can buy both consoles second hand. They are normally cheaper they should work fine. If your going to get a second hand Xbox or PS3 though I'd try and get an Xbox 360 Elite and a PS3 slim as they have less hardware and heating problems compared to the older models. They come with warranties anyway so if anything goes wrong they'll fix it. I got a second hand controller from EB saved a shitload of money and works fine.

Have owned both since launch. 360 has the better online community and IMO the controller feels much better to me. That's really the deciding factor for me. I get multiplat games on 360 and use the PS3 for it's awesome exclusives.

I've never been a fanboy, and have always owned each platform every gen. This gen I also bought every platform once again but after a few months sold my PS3. It was just collecting dust. After a year or so my GF bought me another one. It still collects dust just like my old PS3. Only a handful of games that really interest me (ones that I can't already buy on 360). It's now mainly used as a blu ray player.

For me this gen Xbox has well and truly surpassed Playstation as my favorite gaming console. So many great games, great controller, great online play and all-round great system.

Also, only one person I know has a PS3 compared to the 20+ who have an X360.

Im the complete opposite lol, my 360 is the machine collecting dust.

And seriously the next person that says one has a better community online than the other i might hunt done ffs, seriously the most moronic comment you can make in a console v console discussion.
