Prospective employers think differently (coming from the mouths of prospective employers).

So please, explain whats wrong with Melb Uni Engineering?

As much as we all may not like to admit it, the name of the uni often means more than the quality of the course.

Agreed. But Melbourne sure is a hell of a lot more handy for public transport. Driving to Clayton every day doesn't appeal.

Skeppersap, Monash Engineering is considered better from what I've heard. Maybe someone told you different, but what I've seen certainly hasn't changed my opinion. Arts is pretty good though.

The course at Monsah may be better then Melb Uni, I am not disputing that because I do not really know about Monash Uni's course. I do know that people often say that Melb uni Eng is very theoretical, where as other Eng courses are more practical.

However!!!!!!

Melb Uni has built a reputation over the years. Just like Havard University, where the MBA is not the best MBA course in the world (certainly right up there though), it has the reputation. Because of this reputation, it is more likely that an employer will favour a Harvard graduate over a graduate from a school with a better program but lesser reputation.

The same can be said for Melb Uni, only to a lesser extent.

Another thing to be considered in this debate is that Melb Uni has a higher ENTER requirement. Thus, the attendees of Melb Uni will be, on average, slightly higher achievers. Now, of course, there are many many exceptions to this, I am just trying to explain what would be going through an employers mind when he sat down to choose himself an Engineer.

Having been through my lecture, I will now give you Engineering Students some advice. I have been out of uni for 2 years now and am working with an international australian engineering consultant. Working in construction supervision of roads, I have had to learn EVERYTHING useful to me on the job. At uni they do not teach you how to negotiate a contract or how to price a job. They do not teach you how to write up a proposal or deal with Contractors who try to pressure you into making decisions which will ultimately benefit only them. Unless you end up being a structural designer, you will have a lot of learning to go. God knows I do.

That, people, was my 2 cents.

While your argument would be 100% true for an Arts degree...Melbourne Engineering's 'reputation' has been around for 40 years, ever since they erected the tilting monstrosity that dominates Monash Clayton. You'd have to wonder about the quality of the firm - or at least the personnel department - if, in a field as technical as engineering, they're hiring on the basis of the name of the Uni.

Again, your argument holds absolutely true for an Arts degree, as despite their being some doubt over the quality of Melbourne staff, curriculum etc, it is still 'the' Arts degree. But engineering? Monash all the way.

finished it in 05.

did english, business management, economics, maths methods, specialist, and physics and got 98.

The main pointers I can give is to work extremely hard during the week so that you can have weekends off. Thats what I did and it keeps you sane. Also, work hard in English and make sure you write enough practice exams to cover basically any essay topic you may get in the exam. The less time you need to think about what you're writing, the better.

You don't need to 'sacrifice a year' to go well in year 12 as many people say. Hard work during the week, hard partying on the weekends and you can't go wrong.

Anyway good luck mate and the time will fly, trust me.

haha. nah you'll go better in applied maths than you did in math A

i did math A advanced and got 61ish, and applied advanced got 80.

math A is just gay unrelated bullshit anyway so it didn't deserve any concentration lol

- English
- History
- Geography (Distance Education.. :thumbsd:)
- Further Maths
- Literature
- Religion and Society (We have to do it at our school. Bloody catholics.. I aint even one of them!)

I am hoping to get 80 on my VCE score.

I am planning to go to England for a year next year. If this doesn't happen then I will go straight to Uni in an Urban Planning/Enviromental Geog/Something to do with geog area.

Yeah mate i'm doing it this year

My subjects are:
English
Math Methods
PE
Accounting
Business management

Got 43 in further maths last year and got an A in my mid-year accounting exam so doing alright.

You have any mid-years?
 
One of my friends did politics via correspondence too.... They lost her assignments and nearly failed her. And because her computer was screwed up, she had to do them all over again within a couple of days.

I got 60% for Maths A (the advanced one), then 51% for Applied Maths (the normal one). Things got worse the next year when I passed Eng Analysis A by 2% and failed Eng Analysis B (47%).

Maths at uni became ridiculous, abstract crap. Worst of all the course coordinater was a real knob, Roger SChmit i think?

I did year 12 last year got 77.4 :)

I did English (Gattaca and Oedipus on exam), Psychology (got 40 :D), Health, Methods and French.

If anyone wants to ask questions go ahead :)

a lot of people struggle in the 2nd year eng subjects apparently. my mate is in 2nd year eng at melbourne and lots of his friends are starting to fail subjects.

I wish I had done Oedipus in Year 12 (did it in year 11). Instead did Agamemnon, which I hated :thumbsd:

Yeah, second year was a struggle for me. In semester 2 of second year I failed 2 out of 4 and had an average score of about 45.

Ended up graduating with first class honours though, so cant complain. What i do know is that i learnt more from those fails than from any other subjects. You go a lot better once you finally realise that it isnt all just going to happen for you, that you actually do have to attend lectures and do some study!

Haha, I'm already a Deakin student, but I went with my boyfriend. And no, I'm not robbing the cradle, he's going to be a mature age student. :p It was good though, lots of free stuff.
