No statistician. But I think droughts should be adjusted for number of teams in Comp. the dogs drought for example started when there were 12 teams. With fewer teams the drought was relatively worse.

As a side point Freos drought is not worth mentioning, been in the comp five minutes.

Is it any surprise given the amount of time that us losers spend on Bigfooty that it leads to such spreadsheet production?

We are all just a few posts away from doing a spreadsheet

:eek::eek::eek::eek::eek::eek:
I'm not even prepared to admit how many AFL-related spreadsheets I keep!

1953 was a 12 club league. The 3 expansion clubs from VFA after 28 years since 1925 had still not won a flag and St.Kilda a foundation club of league still yet to win their first flag.
A flag to a club every 12 years in theory. Half the clubs over that and half less than that.

Geelong 1 year
Essendon 3 years
Melbourne 5 years
Carlton 6
Fitzroy 9
Richmond 10
Collingwood 17
South Melbourne 20
Hawthorn 28 years (0 flags)
North 28 years (0 flags)
Footscray 28 (0 flags)
St.Kilda 56 years (0 flags)

Interesting thing is the last 10 orso years have seen 3 big droughts broken

Sydney (60+ years), Geelong (40), Dogs (60)

That is because it is an even league in general since the draft and salary cap era took effect. Some things skew the effects but in general it has worked like some form of football communism.

Only took about 3 or 4 years into salary cap era for it to start taking effect. Have a look at 1989 and think how many of the flags in just over 20 years had only been won by 4 clubs in the league. The other 8 that were all still there in that time period were on a drought. In the 1990's alone 7 different clubs from 1990 to 1997 won the flag. Football communism had won and was here to stay. It reduced the standard of what the best could be via spreading talent out amongst all the clubs to make it more even. So we lost the elite level but got a more even league and people would not notice the level of the best falling away to care.

The obvious question is what's better?
