Had a game on Friday night with a couple of veterans (lost of course).
This is a great game. Worker-placement and resource use with trading, bidding and so on.
Basically you have quests you need to master to earn status and other bonuses like extra cards or money. Quests require things like blessings from the temple, geishas, annexes to your family house (dojos etc), weapons and of course agents placed in strategic positions throughout the city of Yedo.
Each quest also has a bonus reward, which you can earn by fulfilling the bonus requirements on top of the basic. For instance a basic quest might require an agent in the tavern, a geisha and a vial of poison. The bonus might require you to also have an agent in the Market and a dojo attached to your house.
In the mix you have trading, special goals, action cards that affect play and a little policeman doing his round ready to arrest your agents.
Get the most status by round 11 (or when one special quest is completed) and you win. Don't forget to grab a couple of special goals cards early - they can add a fair few status points at the end of the game and decide the outcome.
I stuffed around with weapons too much early on (looking for one type of weapon that just would not appear from the weapons card pile!) and then had to trade them out, wasting valuable agents and money. Plus I only got one goal card and didn't even achieve that.
There is a bit of luck in this game, but it seems that it usually comes down to bonus goal cards for experienced players.
Japan, 1605 – Hidetada Tokugawa has succeeded his father as the new Shogun, ruling from the great city of Edo (a.k.a. Yedo), the city known in present times as Tokyo. This marks the beginning of the golden age of the Tokugawa Shogunate and the so-called Edo Period that will last until 1868. Naturally, the most powerful families in Edo immediately try to curry favor with the new Shogun – and this is the opportunity our clan has been looking for, our chance at power and glory. Our clan will prove ourselves to be indispensable to the new Shogun. We will work from the shadows to acquire information about our rival clans. We will kidnap those who might oppose our ascent and assassinate those who prove a threat. We will use cunning to prevent our adversaries from doing the same to us. We will find glory and honor in the eyes of this new Shogun – or failing that we will end his rule by any means necessary.
