Yet another reason we should get rid of religions

As a Christian i don't think it's an absolute neccesity to society that religion be a part of it, but more the common sense beliefs they teach be applied to society.

But because the world is very much a place of various faiths throughout the world its a given their beliefs will have an impact on the nations laws.

A person with faith will know something is wrong because of their religious instruction(if taught correctly).

A person with no faith will know something is wrong if they have been taught by someone of good character.

Religion doesn't give a person a mortgage on being "good" what it does offer perhaps over a person with no faith is a greater sense of guilt if they do something wrong, because not only do they have to answer to themselves but also to a greater spiritual authority.

A person with no faith only has to answer to their own conscience.

But in the end both have to answer to the law of the land.
Good post

I have mates from the army that have really really struggled when they got out - theres a few of them found god and its really helped them - one in particular was headed straight for jail and is now a jehovas witness

Now im a deadset agnostic but i can see where its useful.

I just want religion out of politics. Im happy for you to believe in whatever deity you want - im happy for you to demand that the people who come to your place of worship adhere to your deity’s whatevers.

Im not happy when you want your deity’s rules enshrined in legislation that the rest of us are required to obey - as you wouldnt be happy forced to follow the rules of some other deity (ie people pissing their pants over sharia law)

Im also not interested in your religion accepting taxpayer funds for schools etc then rejecting people based on prejudice on colour creed or any other set of bias.

If you dont want gay students / teachers - fine - you dont get government funding - give you 1000-1 odds that with this criteria quickly means they can put their cherry picked bible verses off the the side with shellfish and mixed fabrics etc.....

I consider myself a practicing Buddhist and have been for a few years. Can't say a bad word about all the ones I know. Altruism, peace and generosity are core fundamentals.

Most religions have some decent principles behind them. Unfortunately all religions are open to exploitation by zealots and Buddhism is no different.

Well that can be applied to anything really. Workplace, sports field, charity etc

True but religion (or more accurately dogma) seems to be the one with the most extreme outcomes. I really don't care what people believe but I do baulk at the my religion is better than your religion argument when all religions have been demonstrably shown to have some pretty horrible, horrible elements to them.

Now I'm not saying for a second yourself (or anyone you know) endorses violence against Rohingya or turns a blind eye to child abuse. And if following Buddhism gives you some element of peace in your life, then good luck to you. But the special status that organised religion is given in many societies has allowed atrocities to happen and to continue to do so.

"Get rid of religion". Imagine Government's started doing this. That wouldn't cause any backlash or riots or wars. Genius idea.

Yep. I'm an atheist but more than that I'm a secularist - believe in whatever you want as long as you're not using that belief to discriminate against others.

This has recently happened in Canada. It seems to be coming from an anti-immigration stance, rather than a secularist/pluralist position per se. I personally think it stinks.

Yeah it’s a bit ridiculous. My guess is it will push kids into religious schooling ghettos.

Its impossible to get religion out of politics. Religion tells people how they should act and what is right and wrong. Politics set laws telling people what is right and wrong and constraining how they act. You can not seperate them.

We need to get rid of religion to improve our politics so people vote based on what is best for them and not what they think god decrees.

Best way to reduce the influence of religion might be paradoxically to send kids to religious schools.

I went to a Catholic school and every one of my mates ended up an atheist. The problem was we were all given Bibles and we read them. And we all started to figure out that it belonged in the fantasy section next to Lord of the Rings and the Narnia books. I can remember a favourite past time was looking for the most outrageous passage we could find, deuteronomy being a favourite source and getting our religious teachers to explain it. I remember laughing so hard that we cried - I couldn't believe people could take it seriously. Figured out later on, sadly some people do.

Dear Israel Folau,

Thank you for doing so much to educate people regarding God's Law. I have learned a great deal from you, and try to share that knowledge with as many people as I can.

When someone tries to defend the homosexual/transsexual lifestyle, for example, I simply remind them that Leviticus 18:22 clearly states it to be an abomination ... End of debate.
I do, however, need some advice from you, however, regarding some other elements of God's Laws and how to follow them.

These are:
1. Leviticus 25:44 states that I may possess slaves, both male and female, provided they are purchased from neighbouring nations.
A friend of mine claims that this applies to Papua New Guineans, but not New Zealanders. Can you clarify? Why can't I own New Zealanders?

2. I would like to sell my daughter into slavery, as sanctioned in Exodus 21:7. In this day and age, what do you think would be a fair price for her?

3. I know that I am allowed no contact with a woman while she is in her period of Menstrual uncleanliness - Lev.15: 19-24.
The problem is how do I tell? I have tried asking, but most women take offence.

4. When I burn a bull on the altar as a sacrifice, I know it creates a pleasing odour for the Lord - Lev.1:9.
The problem is my neighbours. They claim the odour is not pleasing to them. Should I smite them?

5. I have a neighbour who insists on working on the Sabbath. Exodus 35:2 clearly states he should be put to death.
Am I morally obligated to kill him myself, or should I ask the police to do it?

6. A friend of mine feels that even though eating shellfish is an abomination, Lev. 11:10, it is a lesser abomination than homosexuality. I don't agree. Can you settle this? Are there 'degrees' of abomination?

7. Lev. 21:20 states that I may not approach the altar of God if I have a defect in my sight. I have to admit that I wear reading glasses. Does my vision have to be 20/20, or is there some wiggle-room here?

8. Most of my male friends get their hair trimmed, including the hair around their temples, even though this is expressly forbidden by Lev. 19:27. How should they die?

9. I know from Lev. 11:6-8 that touching the skin of a dead pig makes me unclean, but may I still play football if I wear gloves?

10. My uncle has a farm. He violates Lev.19:19 by planting two different crops in the same field, as does his wife by wearing garments made of two different kinds of thread (cotton/polyester blend). He also tends to curse and blaspheme a lot.........
..... Is it really necessary that we go to all the trouble of getting the whole town together to stone them? Lev.24:10-16. Couldn't we just burn them to death at a private family affair, like we do with people who sleep with their in-laws? (Lev. 20:14)

11. The bible clearly states Leviticus 19:28, which says,”You shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for the dead, nor tattoo any marks on you: I am the Lord.”

Why do you have tattoos Israel Folau ? Am I now morally obliged to now stone you to death ?

I know you have studied these things extensively and thus enjoy considerable expertise in such matters, so I'm confident you can help.

Thank you again for reminding us that God's word is eternal and unchanging.

PS: It would be a real shame if we couldn't own a New Zealander

LOL, 25 years ago we sent our 2 kids to a religious school, not for the god s**t but for the perceived better education, they had the same reaction as you, they thought the whole story was laughable. My son is now a staunch atheist and the other would class herself as spiritual but despises organized religion.

My son sent his 2 eldest children to a religious school early in their schooling for the same reason, it didn't last long, the indoctrination didn't take. They have since moved to a very good public school.

Stop ragging on Leviticus. He used to be cool.

You do it slowly. The first way to start is to get rid of subsidies for churches and remove religious instruction from class rooms.
There are plenty of non-religious schools. I fully understand if parents don't want their children going to religious schools, but why should there not be an option for those that do or that don't care? I went to a Catholic school and would be happy to send my child there if I had one, nothing to do with religion but because it was a great school with great facilities.
