I never thought that I'd say this, but I'm actually pleased that Channel 7 have lost the footy for 2002 onward. Because they have certainly lost the plot in recent years.
Why oh why do they indignantly claim to know what it good for us? Nobody that I know wanted the countdown clock - but Dr. Seven knew better. 'Let's craft a style based on glossy, US television sports', they said. It's what the consumers want - or ought to have. WRONG WRONG WRONG! But they saw themselves as visionaries - leading us out of the dark ages. What they did is destroy something unique. How many people (who are old enough to remember)miss World Of Sport? Yeah, it was mayhem - but it had more character in its rectal cavity than a month of Sportsworlds. Channel 9, give it some credit, has sensed the void in recent years and has produced an entertaining Sunday football panel and The Footy Show.
And much as I respect Bruce McAvaney as an all-round sports commentator, I won't miss his footy calling. Bruce - we do not have 'plays' in AFL - take your wanky yankee sports vocabulary and move on.
No, Channel 7 began what we call 'networking' in the late 1980s. All that means is that yuppee Sydney tv executives think that the universe begins and ends in the harbour city. They took one look at Melbourne football culture and gasped in horror. It was so backward, and worse, so daggy! And so they totally misread cultural values, axed everything in sight, and replaced it with something typically shallow and sterile - typically Sydney, that is. Fashion conscious, economic rationalists!
But everything is cyclical. It's not living in the past. It is recognising what is valuable in our tradition, and holding onto it - not turfing it out like a snotty kleenex.
