Your right maybe his improvement was just something the club should have forsore. Regardless we still had Cox on the list and we still could have went out and found a cheaper ruckman. The idea that we had to re-sign Grundy or else the team would fall apart was nonsense.
Nobody is arguing that the team would have fallen apart. What is being argued is that it's generally bad practice to let your best player go when you're in the hunt for a flag

He wasn’t our best player at the time he re signed and whilst it’s not ideal to let top players go you still have to be prepared for it otherwise you get reamed by competent player managers.

He had just won consecutive B&F's and AA jackets, garnering 40 Brownlow votes in the process. Who was the best player on the team as of Christmas 2019?

Buckley was not the best player on that Brisbane team, and it came 13th on the ladder.

Hawthorn was in a slightly different position, having won 2 flags, as had Geelong with Ablett Jr. We had not won any.

We had a strong group of 3-5 top players but no clear best players that stood over the rest. Grundy, Pendlebury, Treloar, Adams, Sidebottom all had claims to the title all with signifcant draw backs to dispute that claim. We also had a whole year to re-sign Grundy, had the year played out we would have realised we're not in premiership contention. Plus given re-signing Grundy cost us Treloar and Stephenson later in the year we werent going to be in premierhsip contention with Grundy's contract. The premiership contention argument falls apart very quickly when the contract supposed to keep us there actively takes us away from thers.

I simply disagree with your conclusion on our top players, but that's fine.

Yes, and that was poor management. I don't think we signed Grundy with the expectation that it would force us to push people out (like our wildly overpaid Stephenson).

We fell out of contention because of gameplan as much as anything.

The point is that it’s OK to lose a pinup player if what you get back helps set you up for success. In Hawthorn’s case IIRC they didn’t get much back, but still achieved success.

I think that is due to some freakish talent collection in the early-mid 2000s. Bastards

I think we expected the Beams payout not to be in the cap when we re signed Grundy but we really should have waited until that was resolved before giving Grundy a godfather offer.

I agree on the gameplan.
