Angel Gomes and Jadon Sancho are the 2 highest rated players in their age group by a fair way...and also best matesI havent caught up with this thread for a while so sorry for quoting old posts.
But not sure I agree with this, at least internally at Spurs. Reportedly Pochettino rates Winks as the highest of the 18-21 batch to come through, whereas the opposite might be true of Edwards. He's regularly been considered one of the best of his age in the country but apparently Pochettino has concerns over his workrate and attitude. It's even been said by youth watchers that he may even rate another young guy who plays in a similar position, Sam Shashoua, who was on our bench in the last couple of games of the season, higher. There's also a possible impasse over his contract situation atm. He's got 1 year left and reportedly he doesn't want to sign without more game time and we won't give him more time until he signs. Similar to the Mios Veljkovic situation. Apparently he also knows that he could earn a lot more money elsewhere, even as a youth player. There's been murmers for about a year now that he's unhappy with the wage cap at Spurs with his mates and international teammates at other clubs earning 20k+ at the same age. Apparently this is the reason he hasn't been included on our pre-season trip to the US as well, so it's not looking good on that front atm.
Agree that it remains to be seen whether Winks can cement himself as a first 11 player for a top 4 side or whether he'll be just a squaddie, but his performances last season are promising in this respect imo. He's got a lot more to him than Mason and Carroll though. Not quality wise, obviously, but stylistically he's the closest thing we'll see to Modric back at Spurs. Whereas Onomah is definitely Dembele like but apparently there are concerns over his tactical and positional discipline in CM and that's why he's mainly been played, without much success tbf, further forward. Interesting to see whether we sign another CM this window or rely on Winks, and perhaps Onomah to be rotational options with Dembele.
In other youth news, apparently Jadon Sancho at City has rejected a new contract and wants to move back to London for personal reasons and because he doesn't believe there is a path to the first team for him at City, with Arsenal and Spurs the main options. Considering our rigid wage cap for youth footballers I think it's most likely he ends up at Arsenal. I've never seen him play but youth watchers on a Spurs forum I'm on are extremly excited by this link and consider him a seriously special talent.
