I think he has benefited from improved delivery and a better forward setup with the forwards not competing against each other as much

And clean ball movement, limited turnovers out of defense. we are getting so much clean ball forward of center and that allows us to pick and choose going inside 50. we have found that balance of when to hold and when to go. First half of the year we were just bombing it into the pocket time and time again.

There was a stat during the Hawks game showing goals from turnovers. At one we had nine goals from Hawks turnovers. Not so long ago it was the other way around.

Great to see that it was the other team that was always under pressure and made mistakes as a result. And that we were capitalising on those mistakes. That’s is even more pleasing.

McStay has been improving nicely all year.

He lifted his work rate from last year, but got the yips. Done a lot more than just the odd speccy this year. Could still end up being the best forward yet.

Selfless. Should model his game on Jack Riewoldt.

The other thing when we are up and about is we aren't over committing numbers to the contested ball and then being burnt on the outside. Effect your confident your team mates will get it done on the inside everyone sets up better on the outside and it just changes the whole shape of the field.

We've been drawing our opponents into doing what we used to do. Freo and Carlton pretty much do that on their own without us making them but what we learned from those games seemed to carry into the game against the Hawks.

Early days, however, I think Rayner may buck the trend of number 1 draft picks of the past decade underperforming or failing to become out and out stars of the comp. He just has all the tools to be a star of the comp and at the very least be a quality contested ball winning, goal kicking mid.
Too true, though I only hope he doesn't suffer too bad a 2nd-year hangover.

Stats incredible: Your club's quirky numbers
Win and win big
Brisbane has won just four games this season, but when the Lions have won, it's been in grand style. With victories over Hawthorn (56 points), Fremantle (55), Carlton (65) and the Hawks again (33), the Lions' average winning margin is 52 points, ranked second behind Melbourne (56 points).

Cashing in on clean hitouts
Most coaches in the competition will talk about winning ascendency around the stoppages, and the Lions seem to have stumbled onto a successful formula. With Stefan Martin and back-up Oscar McInerney doing most of the ruck work, Brisbane has won a hitout-to-advantage from 15.3 per cent of ruck contests this season – ranked fourth. They have then scored from 21 per cent of those hitouts-to-advantage, the highest percentage of any team in the AFL.

Rising Star under the radar?
While Collingwood's Jaidyn Stephenson and Adelaide's Tom Doedee rightly get plenty of discussion about their Rising Star credentials, Lion Alex Witherden is quietly putting together a stellar season. The creative half-back is averaging 23 disposals a game (at 79 per cent efficiency), but more impressively he's gaining 19 metres each disposal, ranked third of the top-50 ball winners in the competition. – Michael Whiting

I knew we should've lost the Hawthorn game. That way we'd be top.

According to footy wire Alex has Tom covered in almost every area that matters - and is almost two years younger. Interesting that both are Ex- Geelong Falcons

Interesting comparison between McCluggage and McGrath here - http://www.afl.com.au/news/2018-08-07/the-stats-files-whos-top-of-the-2016-draft-class

This was also a theory I hadn't heard publicly before...
Conole rated both as "outstanding kids" off their character, but saw greater on-field upside in McCluggage, who played in the TAC Cup for the North Ballarat Rebels.

His suspicion was McCluggage was, perhaps, not exposed to the same training load – because of the tyranny of distance in the wider Rebels playing group – as McGrath's Sandringham Dragons.

The theory was he would thrive in an AFL environment.

In relation to Rayner. Can anyone recall a forward for Brisbane who was under 190cm and had such a strong overhead marking ability?

I'd have to go back to Voss when he went up forward?

Hopefully he does build his tank to play big mins in the midfield, but even as a forward prospect, jeez he is exciting.

Rocky up forward was a player. Not so much overhead, but contested marking one-on-one, I backed him in to mark it more often than not..

Against North 82 of our 104 points came from turnovers. That's epic.

I know the award means next to nothing and its just opinions etc etc. But how on earth has some reporters not got Witherden anywhere in there top 5o_O

I think the voting system for awarding the rising star is very poor. Many better ways to do it.
