I think it's funny how everyone in this thread has ignored the fact that there is not one single quote or scrap of evidence that Coniglio has even considered boycotting GWS.

Boycotting the draft for 12 months won't help if if the Giants finish last in 2012 which is certainly possible.

Seriously, if he's really homesick, even if he spooked the Giants into not picking him, it won't help him at all, neither Freo nor WC will have picks low enough in the next couple of years to get him, so pretty much whenever he enters the draft, he'll have to go interstate.

I don't really get why it would make him more likely to choose cricket though, if he wants to make a decent quid at that he'll have to spend most of his time overseas (be it representing Aus, or 20/20 or county cricket etc) so I can't see how that helps his homesickness.

No, you've gotta not have played in a registered footy comp (at any level including juniors) for 5 years to be taken under that alternative talent rule (or whatever name they've given it) so clearly Coniglio doesn't qualify.

No doubt he can earn good money in the IPL if he's a decent cricketer but if he wants to stay at home I don't see why he would want to do that either (as well as not wanting to go to GWS).

You have to go through the draft, no club can pick a player up (the only exception is those from other sports who haven't played any footy) outside of the draft or trade, and obviously a kid like Coniglio would never get through to the rooke draft, wouldn't get through the top 5 even. Even from a club's VFL team (say us where we have our own VFL team) you still have to take that player through the draft, we can't put them straight on our list.

An extra year off could give him more time to decide which sport he loves. The extra year of developement he misses out on is overated imo, just look at all the mature age players picked up and playing well.

Maybe WCE/Freo could do a deal with GWS for a top 3 pick

Say Freo or WCE get pick 3, what's to stop GWS using pick 1 or 2 on Coniglio? Does GWS have to lock in who their first 2 picks will be?

But then again, they might not have the number 1 pick and he might not e the best in the country at that time.

So if he'd rather go to Port, or Brisbane or Gold Coast or whoever is likely to have the top few picks next year, he could do that I suppose? I dont really see the point as you'd expect both West Coast and Freo to be at the pointy end of the ladder rather than the bottom next year.

I would only be concerned if he chose cricket over AFL as the main thing to me is to have as many talented kids playing the game as possible.
That said I think its safe to say we will see him in the draft and that we will see his name being called out by GWS.

Coniglio is a very, very switched on kid. He's by no means arrogant, and by no means immature. He's touted as the number one draft pick for a reason, and it's not just because he can kick a footy.

I'm guessing that there will be multiple teams qualifying for a PP before the first round next year - Adelaide, Port, Brisbane & GC would all have to be considered strong contenders at this stage (especially the SA based clubs).

The only way for an Australian player to join an AFL team list without going through the draft is if they have not been a registered player in an AFL associated league for a period of 5 years.

As an aside, this situation really isn't all that different to Marc Murphy's. Murphy was given a choice - sign with Brisbane (under the F/S rule) or take your chances in the draft. He chose the draft and ended up being taken by Carlton with pick #1. Coniglio's options are more restricted - he can nominate for the 2011 draft knowing that he'll almost certainly be selected by GWS (a team he allegedly doesn't want to play for), or he can defer his draft nomination by 12 months and take his chances in the 2012 lottery. Murphy escaped criticism and rightly so - why therefore is there so much vitriol towards Coniglio?

It is pretty pathetic to be honest. You play for the team that picks you. While I will never play for a AFL club because I am in a wheelchair, I would keep my allegiance to the club that picks me. If it was Port, so be it. Yes I would hope the Crows pick me, but that rarely ever happens. Dyson Heppell is the only player that comes to mind recently. Surely he knows that GWS will be a powerhouse in 5-6 years time.

Could do a Chris Judd. Comes from Melbourne, picked by West Coast, has to go the other side of the country and then plays in two grand finals with them. Wins a brownlow and a premiership. Has does everything he could do with them and then decides to move back home.

I have no doubt this is what could happen to him as well. He will have other clubs drooling over him, especially WCE and Frem. If he gets picked by GWS, he plays with them for 2-3 years, and then demand a trade back home. Frem and West Coast would want him, but GWS would demand something huge in return.

Still should stick with GWS though. He would be crazy not to go there.
