Young star considering boycotting draft

But will he play topline cricket? I read here a while ago that he was overlooked for a contract by the WACA.

Sure, that is a question the boy, his family and advisors need to ask .... and answer ... before he can make an intelligent informed decision.

If he's not going to choose footy then why go to the Draft Combine?

He should make his choice before then, so if he chose cricket or uni or hanging out with mates in Perth his spot at the combine can be taken by some other young player with maybe half the talent but who doesn't care where he gets drafted because they just want to play footy.

I'd say he's pretty certain to choose AFL eventually. He's the standout number one draft choice in Australia. He's a very good cricketer too, but he would have to build on his first season in Grade cricket, get a contract for WA, overtake guys like Tom Beaton, Marcus Harris etc., then perform well enough for WA for a few years to be considered for the Australian team, even then he might not stay in the team for long. IPL dollars are no certainty either, never having seen him play cricket his style may not suit T20 at all and with the IPL being a pretty volatile market which is losing money with every year if I was in that situation choosing football would be a no brainer.

Compare that with AFL where he walks into a club as the number one draft choice (whether thats this year or next is another story). If he's at GWS he will probably be put into a leadership group or something straight away and will have his long term future secured with a nice contract.

I would be extremely surprised if he didn't choose football.

I love how the Port ppl keep on crowing on about meaningless stats from a backwater competition as if they mean something. Oh and the AFL Port side DISTANCED themselves from the SANFL (Sp?) when they joined as much as possible, they arn't the same entity.
I should be probably be the last person asking this question but where are the mods?

Really not the place for this stuff.

As for Coniglio, the kid obviously needs time. It is a huge decision and I am actually pleased he and his family also have said they are prioritising studies.

But, but, but, he started it ............... lol. It's deleted

If GWS were smart they would try and work a trade with him to the two WA teams

Gee if only someone would ask something similar only a few hours earlier to get a response. Oh wait...

Why don't GWS just organise a best possible trade for the kid?

...and the response...

According to his dad, his choice is between AFL and cricket (and potentially uni). GWS doesn't seem to be the issue, rather the sport of choice.

Whatever he enjoys more, otherwise he's just passing time.

I'd say a lot of this is beat up

With all respect , I dont think it is a beat up .

Good chance he will sit out unless GWS get of there platform of expecting everything and trade in xtra experienced players so the likes of Coniglio ( Who is a Star footballer , including Larke medallist ) dont get pulverised in there first season . GWS need heaps of experienced players , judging on how the GC youngsters have struggled . If GWS expect too much in the mini draft and turn down experienced players for the concession kids , then players like Coniglio will think twice about going and getting smashed in there first season . GWS should trade three of there concession picks this year and leave Justin Martin next year as the final concession 17 yr old , Thereby getting the established players and allowing the 18 yr olds a better platform for success . Just my thoughts though , but if Sheedy and Silvagni get choosy on experienced players offered up they will struggle to convince the young kids to come over . Just my thoughts

Sounds like someone wants to trade Chris Masten for the number 1 pick in the mini draft (Jaeger O'Meara).

NO , .... im saying they should trade three of the 17 yr olds this season for 5-7 good experienced players to allow the 10 eighteen yr old first round picks some solid players around them

Fair enough he can join us in our second year and still get smashed, with all due respect who got the spoon last year? maybe gaff didn't want to go to your club but he sucked it up. So yes we will be a poor club next year no doubt but if he is only interested in being a front runner then go to court and get the draft thrown out.

Well if he sits out this year , the AFL is losing one of the best young talents from WA for a while , maybe Swan Districts will pay him $ 40 000 to play with them in 2012 ..... Im sure BHP Biliton can afford it . Coniiglio can go across in the second season when GWS are more experienced , he is older and stronger , ..... if you look at it this way , it makes sense .

By "smashed" he meant physically not on the score board. Teams, no matter how good their young players are, need older players for guidance to to provide a physical presence.

Look at Carlton and Melbourne when they were/are building their sides. Carlton started off with basically no older players due to some pretty crap player management at the same time as we were bottoming out (+ the salary cap penalties on top). Up until 2007 we may have been getting good kids into the side, but out onfield and off-field culture was crap, we had no leadership and we were geting thumped on a regular basis.

As for Melbourne, they have been talked up as the "Next Ultimate Team" due to the number of top 20 picks they have been able to get into the side but how have they performed? Some of it would be the time it takes to have kids develop, but A LOT of it (IMO anyway) would be due to the lack of leadership around the team due to Melbourne off-loading numerous older players in recent years (not all by their own accord).

Carlton's fortunes really did turn around when we got Judd to the team. His presence has fast-tracked the development of numerous players in our side, and his leadership has been priceless.

I am not saying Masten will transform your team, or that you should go out and recruit junk players +28 years old, but if you don't have some experience in a young team they won't develop properly and they probably isn't the most enticing place for some young kids to be (thus a possible reason why some might avoid being recruited there).

I think in Stephen's case the W.A. media are beating this up as they dont want to see a West Australian superstar on the other side of the country.

The WACA may not have signed Coniglio but Im pretty sure they along with Cricket Australia are all over him. Expect cricket to put up alot more of a fight for young talent than in the past as they were getting sick of losing talent to the AFL. With the advent of 20/20 domestically and the IPL cricket now has a financial carrot to dangle in front of these kids. Previously the lack of money plus a really strong australian cricket system, meaning lack of opportunities, made it alot easier to convince young talent to come to AFL.

Good on the kid for taking his time to decide, Cricket is a game where you dont reach your peak till much later. I know if I had the choice of playing AFL or wearing the baggy green I wouldnt hesitate to represent my country.

I agree with that
